The films of director Zhang Yimou have a panoramic sweep to them that deftly creates a fantastical vision of ancient Chinese culture for the screen. Yimou's eye for color and sense of drama demands a score that conveys the emotion, tradition and action of his movies. Here Shigeru Umebayashi tells each part of the story with a mix of traditional flute, drums, string instruments and, to a lesser degree, orchestra and moody-sounding synthesizers. The lilting melody of "Lovers" is particularly effective, simmering with a passion that leaves no doubt about the tone of the scene; it comes back to dramatic effect at other times in the film as well--the soundtrack closes with a soaring version of it by soprano Kathleen Battle. Similar to but not as heavy as Tan Dun's occasionally overbearing work on Yimou's film Hero, Umebayashi leans toward the subtle for this love story, and the film is better for it. - Tad Hendrickson

This soundtrack caps a busy year for John Williams: In addition to Munich, he also scored Star Wars: Episode Three: Revenge of the Sith, War of the Worlds, and Memoirs of a Geisha. When it comes to Hollywood's A-list big-budget needs, Williams, with 46 Oscar nominations by the end of 2005, remains the go-to composer. But does he deserve his reputation? Well, it depends on what you want from a score: If you expect it to surprise you at every turn, you should look elsewhere; but if you want music to faithfully match the mood of the images it accompanies, and as lavish as said images usually are, Williams is worth every penny he gets, as Munich amply proves. While Steven Spielberg's drama-thriller starts off in 1972, Williams eschews period touches and delivers a mix of powerful, string-heavy atmospherics--"Hatikvah (The Hope)," "A Prayer for Peace," "Thoughts of Home"--while ethnic elements (which could easily have been overdone in a film dealing with Palestinians and Israelis) are, cleverly, almost subliminal. Fans of otherworldly female vocals should note that sought-after session singer Lisbeth Scott (The Chronicles of Narnia) appears on tracks such as "Munich, 1972" and "Remembering Munich." --Elisabeth Vincentelli

Wayne Wang (Eat a Bowl of Tea) directs a large, outstanding cast spread over eight different tales of the lives of Chinese women, most of them set in the past. The script by Tan and Ronald Bass (Rain Man) is a delicate balance of emotions that swell but don't gush, and Wang brings impressive texture and a personal feel to Tan's descriptions of daily life in the Chinese-American community. This enjoyable and touching biography of martial-arts film star Bruce Lee stars Jason Scott Lee (no relation), an actor with a lively face and natural intensity, who makes every moment of this film compelling. Directed by Rob Cohen, Dragon traces Bruce Lee's slow rise over myriad obstacles--most of them race-based--to become an international superstar in films. Lee's origins are oddly set in San Francisco instead of his real home in Seattle, but then again there is plenty of artistic license going on as Cohen explores the actor's psyche through some powerful fantasy sequences. Lauren Holly is good as Lee's wife, Linda (whose book about her late husband inspired this movie). A scene involving Bruce's rescue of son Brandon (who died in a filmmaking accident in 1993) from a murderous spirit is plain spooky. The special-edition DVD release has a widescreen presentation, director interview, featurette, screen tests, closed captioning, optional French soundtrack, and optional Spanish subtitles. --Tom Keogh
