Telestrations the Telephone Game Sketched Out! Telestrations the Telephone Game Sketched Out!
List Price: $29.99
Sale Price: $20.00

Telestrations is the visual equivalent of the classic school-yard game "telephone." It's a fun-filled sketching game in which everyone's attempts at "art" can turn hilarious. The game starts with a secret word that is passed from player to player. As the word is sketched, interpreted, and then sketched again, it undergoes a visual transformation that will surprise and delight everyone. Designed for players ages 13 and up, Telestrations is sure to be a hit at parties. Telestrations Ages: 13+ Requires: 4 to 8 players What We Think Fun factor: Durability: Ease of assembly: Novelty factor: The Good: Easy-to-learn game with cleverly designed, reusable game pieces. The Challenging: Scoring system caters to competitive players; others may wish to avoid it altogether. In a Nutshell: A creative and funny visual equivalent of classic game of "Telephone." Telestrations turns the classic schoolyard game of "Telephone" into a hilarious sketching game. With each guess, players get further from the original, intended interpretation. View larger. Eight Players for Maximum Hilarity Telestrations is designed for 4 to 8 players. As with the classic game "Telephone," the bigger the group, the more confusing -- and funny -- things can get. Gameplay requires little more than the included erasable markers and sketch books. Each sketch book contains eight erasable pages, and each page is labeled with either an "S" (for sketch) or a "G" (for guess). The spiral binding allows you to flip pages before passing the sketch book to the next player, and the label lets that player know whether to sketch or guess. Aside from the occasional unrepressed snicker, gameplay is silent until the final results are revealed. The erasable markers have a fine point to allow true artists to flourish. Clean-up cloths are provided, as is a timer and a deck of 144 cards, each of which contains six "secret" words. Gameplay: Friendly or Competitive Mode? Much like "Telephone," Telestrations leaves a lot of participants scratching their heads. One player's sketch of a pretzel might end up looking more like a ribbon, and that ribbon might evolve into a banana peel. Only rarely does the final guess match the original word, so playing Telestrations is almost always a delightful comedy of errors. While the game is easy to learn, scoring can get a bit complicated. The instruction manual describes two different modes of gameplay: friendly and competitive. The friendly mode awards points based on the most creative and hilarious drawings, a subjective determination that can lead to either a fun debate or an irritating disagreement, depending on who is playing. In either case, a simple democratic vote may be necessary to speed things up. The competitive mode awards points to players whose sketch helps another player win a point. This determination is straightforward enough, but going back over the drawings and assessing points may be tedious for those who would rather simply laugh at the results. Anyway you decide to play it, Telestrations will bring out the artists in your friends and family, along with lots of loud laughter. What's in the Box Telestrations game instructions, 8 erasable sketch books, 8 erasable markers, 4 eraser cloths, 144 cards in card box, 90-second sand timer, and die. Good Girls, Good Food, Good Fun: The Story of USO Hostesses during World War II (Gender and American Culture) Good Girls, Good Food, Good Fun: The Story of USO Hostesses during World War II (Gender and American Culture)
List Price: $34.00
Sale Price: $4.98

Throughout World War II, when Saturday nights came around, servicemen and hostesses happily forgot the war for a little while as they danced together in USO clubs, which served as havens of stability in a time of social, moral, and geographic upheaval. Meghan Winchell demonstrates that in addition to boosting soldier morale, the USO acted as an architect of the gender roles and sexual codes that shaped the "greatest generation."Combining archival research with extensive firsthand accounts from among the hundreds of thousands of female USO volunteers, Winchell shows how the organization both reflected and shaped 1940s American society at large. The USO had hoped that respectable feminine companionship would limit venereal disease rates in the military. To that end, Winchell explains, USO recruitment practices characterized white middle-class women as sexually respectable, thus implying that the sexual behavior of working-class women and women of color was suspicious. In response, women of color sought to redefine the USO's definition of beauty and respectability, challenging the USO's vision of a home front that was free of racial, gender, and sexual conflict.Despite clashes over class and racial ideologies of sex and respectability, Winchell finds that most hostesses benefited from the USO's chaste image. In exploring the USO's treatment of female volunteers, Winchell not only brings the hostesses' stories to light but also supplies a crucial missing piece for understanding the complex ways in which the war both destabilized and restored certain versions of social order.

Uso Board

There is a new gold rush for covered call writers called weekly options, or "Weeklys." (Yes this is spelled correctly because the Chicago Board Options Exchange (CBOE) trademarked the name.)

Weeklys have been around since 2005 and have hardly been noticed because the option offerings were limited to the S&P 500 (SPX) and the S&P100 (OEX). In June of 2010, Weeklys were offered on the SPY, QQQQ, DIA and IWM, and in July 2010 the offerings were extended to equities and ETFs. Stocks like Apple, Amazon, Netflix, Microsoft, Intel, Cisco, Research in Motion, IBM, Goldman Sachs and Bank of America, and more are now available. Las Vegas Sands is the newest addition.

In addition, there are some solid ETFs like the QQQQs (NASDAQ), GLD and GDX (Gold), SLV (Silver), USO (Oil) and FAS (3x bull), to name a few. There are about 30 at the moment and growing. However, the list can change weekly because each option exchange is allowed 5 picks per week to add to the Weekly list. If for some reason an exchange is not getting the volume, they can choose another stock. Recently, BIDU disappeared from the list.

Weeklys come out every Thursday and expire the following Friday. There are no new Weeklys in the final week where the monthly options expire. You can just write the next week from the monthly list.

Why Weeklys Explode Covered Call Writing Profits

Write Four Times a Month

Selling call options four times a month versus once is a pure gift. With option volatility at the moment, the premiums are fat and an experienced covered call writer can earn A LOT more premium. Doubling the monthlies in many cases is not unreasonable. That's like your boss calling you into their office and telling you they are doubling your salary and will now pay you every Friday! Nice. Also, if you use a long-dated put for protection, this "insurance" can be paid for very fast due to more writes per month.

Forecast Over Eight Days Instead of Thirty

Setting your crystal ball to look out 8 days versus 30 is easier. As traders know, the trend is your friend and it's much easier to look at what is happening in the week ahead. One of the biggest complaints about covered call writing is what to do if the stock really runs up and you have to either forgo the increased gains over the call option strike you sold or buy back the call at a higher price. If this happens, it's a lot easier to adjust over one week and reset with a new trend the next week.

Time Decay is Your Best Buddy

All call writers love and bank on time decay. With Weeklys, time decay is greatly accelerated. There have been times that calls I sold on Thursday morning on introduction eroded over 30% by Monday's close. I love weekends now more than ever! You can write near-the-money calls or at-the-money-calls and collect the higher premiums due to the rapid time decay.

Skip Earnings Week - Finally

How many times have you crossed your legs and held your nose during earnings week? Well, now you can just sit it out. Weeklys offer the maximum in flexibility. You can also trade the news that week before or after the event. Again, you can be in or out of the market weekly. THAT is flexible.

Super Size Premiums by Selling Weekly Puts

How much fun is this? Your stock's trend is solid, you have a buy / write for the next week and the money is in your account. Weeklys offer an astonishing opportunity to super size returns by selling a naked put or a put spread (to limit risk and to use less margin) for more premium. Just follow normal put selling rules; sell below a strong support point, at least one strike out of the money and maybe more if the premiums are good.

Choosing the put strike depends on your threshold of risk. Most put writers sell the puts in hopes that they actually can get the stock "put" to them, meaning they get to buy the stock at the lower price. That's a profitable way to get discounts on stocks you want to own anyway. Either outcome can be fine. One way you get to keep the premium and the other is you buy one of your core holdings on sale.

If you do not want the stock, just buy back the put. Another value is you do not need to own the underlying stock to sell puts, so you can sell more contracts to collect more premium. Just be sure you have the margin if the put is naked (each brokerage has different margin requirements, for each stock, so check before you sell) and the account size to buy the stock. If not, then turn it into a spread and close it out if the trade does not perform.

It's amazing how many experienced investors and fund managers do not know much about weekly options. The word is spreading. One minor irritating issue is many retail brokerage houses do not offer Weeklys on their platforms. E-Trade and Charles Schwab do not as of this time. Schwab is scheduled for January 2011 and E-Trade has no date. Besides the sophisticated direct access platforms, there is Think or Swim (TOS). TD Ameritrade bought TOS and clients get the platform.

As a non-client, you can still download and use the platform in play mode to paper trade and get some experience. Their support is quite good too. There is a lot to know about the various covered call writing strategies for up, down or sideways markets. The more you learn, the more you earn.

Market Meltdowns, Inflation, Protecting Capital & Trading Commodities

The purpose in owning commodities like gold, silver and oil is to protect oneself from the effect of inflation that I believe will begin to assert itself in the coming months.

Unfortunately, the United States has taken a monetary policy of printing massive amounts of money to attempt an escape of deflation. In just the past 16 months, the monetary base has ballooned from $908 billion to $2.0 trillion. Bailout funds in the past 2 years total $8.1 trillion….. That is 78 times more than what they spent to bail out WorldCom…… and 123 times more than they spent on Enron. U.S. debt has risen sharply, from $6.2 trillion in 2002 to $12.1 trillion today. These are scary numbers!

The illusion of economic recovery in the U.S. is simply the function of the FED making billions and trillions of newly printed money available at literally ZERO percent interest to the largest financial institutions. The idea that you really can get something for nothing is fantasy. But that’s what’s happening – Money created out of thin air, instead of created by PRODUCTION.

A painful reality check will appear when these quantitative easing policies create inflation without employment or productivity gains. Commodities – hard assets – will outperform everything in this type of environment. To some people commodity investments may sound like a no-brainer investment, however without a sound money and risk management system in place there really is no such investment.

This is why I focus on technical analysis as it provides price points for investments when we should be putting our money to work on a weekly or monthly basis. When volatility is rising I put less money to work to protect my portfolio from sharp price movements (risk). And during low volatility I push more money into the market catching trends with lowered risks.

What really blows my mind is how almost everyone I know who employed a broker or financial advisor lost between 30-70% of their portfolios during the market crash. What the heck was everyone paying for?

What I am trying to say is everyone can make money in a bull market. The question is, do either you or your financial advisor know when to take some profits to lower overall risk? How much money will you give back when the market corrects, starts another bear market or is affected by a terrorist attack? Do you have protective stops in place?

Ok, that’s enough of that; let’s get to the charts…

Gold Futures Trading – Hour Chart
The gold futures chart allows for us to trade prices around the clock 23 hours a day. A lot of important price patterns are analyzed from the over night trading hours which helps to provide low risk and high probability setups for the GLD gold fund.

This hour chart shows about 3 times more trading data on gold than the GLD etf. Using this data we know if gold will be gapping higher or lower the next day and if the price is trading near a support or resistance level, etc… I focus on selling short gold at resistance levels in a down trend and buying dips during up trends.

The futures trading volume is very interesting to look at. The selling volume was more than twice what we are seeing for this bounce/rally. A low volume rally/bounce is not exactly what we want to see for a move higher. I have my doubts about this being THE NEXT LEG HIGHER, but let’s watch it unfold.

Gold futures Trading Signals

GLD Gold ETF Trading – Daily Chart
Trading just the US market sessions does limit the trading opportunities. When commodity etf’s open each day they tend to gap up or down as the overnight trading move the price. To most traders GLD is an ugly looking chart because of its tendency to gap up and down each day. But when you focus on the gold futures charts for trend and price pattern analysis things become very clear.

Gold is moving higher currently and I am waiting for a low risk entry point before jumping on board. I don’t chase prices higher unless there is a lot of excitement in the air with lots of momentum to back up the higher risk play and, I do not feel this is a time to panic and buy gold.

GLD Gold ETF Trading

SLV Silver Exchange Trade Fund – Daily Chart
Silver has had a nice pop and I thing it will out perform gold when the time comes. But this upward slanted mega phone pattern is not what I like to trade. While it is still bullish, it’s close to a neutral pattern and breakdowns from this can be fast and painful if you do not have a protective stop in place.

It’s looking a little long in the teeth for this bounce so I am waiting to see what happens over the next few days.

Silver SLV ETF

Crude Oil USO Fund – Daily Chart

Oil has had a great bounce off of a major support level back in December. Oil is now testing its October highs. It will take a few weeks for a new setup to form in oil as buying here carries about 15% downside risk.

Oil Trading Signals

Natural Gas UNG Fund – Daily Chart
Last weekend I got together with my buddy who is a futures broker in Toronto. We spent a bunch of time going over some charts, swapping thoughts, ideas strategies etc…

Anyways he said a ton of people are opening futures accounts and wanting to trade natural gas. He said that is a suicidal thing to do and that almost everyone who opens an account to trade natural gas loses all their money within 3 months. Natural gas is one commodity you need to have a solid trading strategy along with strict risk and money management.

Natural gas on the UNG chart looks like a possible short play. But let’s wait and see how things unfold this week.
