Many people face the challenge of defining themselves. When you don't meet this challenge or you don't try to define who you are, other people will take up the task. Once that happens your life is no longer in your control. It still isn't too late to take back that control, no matter what age you are, no matter what experience you have.
A group of psychologists associated with the Academy of Music in Berlin did a study on the students in the violin program there and discovered something amazing. The most advanced students did not get that way because of some talent they were born with. The thing that caused their skill, not surprising, was the amount of time that they practiced their craft. That may not seem like big news, but the observation turned out to be pretty much universal.
A study done of the youth players in Canadian hockey found that most of the superstars were born in the first couple months of the year. Was this due to the availability of ice in winter? No, it was because the cut off dates for youth hockey meant someone born in January was going to be the biggest player on the team (generally speaking) and those more mature players got more playing time. (more practice) and the threshold number of hours for both violinists and hockey players to become world class was identical. 10,000 hours.
10,000 hours is the 'magical number' which means that you are a world class hockey player, violinist, playwright, software programmer, internet marketer, or whatever. Yeah, keep plugging away and you will be world class. Talent has very little to do with it and practice has everything to do with success. Why do you think you can meet millionaires and think, jeez, I'm smarter than them, or whatever? It's about effort and time. So how do you discover your 10,000? Make a list of what you have done with your life, and how much time you have devoted to those things. If you are over a certain age, something is going to jump out at you, and you will have an 'aha' moment.
Even if you think your expertise is not marketable, think again. This is about self esteem and self confidence. If you are a 10,000 hour landscaper, you have things to teach the masses. If you are a 10,000 hour coffee drinker, you can turn that knowledge and expertise into a course or a series of seminars or whatever. Whatever your skill is, it makes you something special and that is the key to a fulfilling life. If you are too young to have 10,000 hours at something, find what you have a lot of hours at, that you are passionate about, and make it a focus. That is the change that is going to make your life (and you) amazing to the world. The change you make, will make you what you want to be.
In order to make progress in your life you have to commit to making change. If you don't make changes tomorrow is going to be very similar to yesterday, with the exception of you being a day older.
