The Best of the Power Rangers - The Ultimate Rangers
List Price: $19.99
Sale Price: $44.50

Chosen by fans, the five Power Rangers episodes on this disc are a cross-section of major events from the long-running series. (Dear to the hearts of PR faithful is remembering the succession of actors and characters who have donned Ranger costumes at different times. This anthology helps.) "White Light Parts 1 & 2," from season two, finds Lord Zedd unleashing the very strange Scarlet Sentinel, and the Rangers in nervous anticipation of their new leader, the unidentified White Ranger. "Countdown to Destruction Parts 1 & 2" would probably impress Roger Corman with its budget-conscious but slick mix of stock footage, computer effects, and rapid cutting in the story of the Rangers' near-defeat battling an invasion of Earth. Another nostalgic favorite, "Wild Force: Forever Red," involves an exciting reunion of past and present Red Rangers. Wild, crazy, engrossing stuff, though special features would have been nice. --Tom Keogh

Long time gamers will remember the multiplayer games in the 70s and 80s. If you wanted to play with a friend, both of you would be sharing the same computer and keyboard and looking at the same tiny screen. How times have changed!
With the popularity of the first person shooters and broadband internet in the 90s, multiplayer games changed dramatically. Players could now play cooperatively and against each other in the comfort of their own homes. Many even formed groups that frequently played together and sometimes competed with other groups.
Next came the massively multiplayer online role playing games (MMORPGs) such as Ultima Online and World of Warcraft. Players not only had to purchase the game, but also pay a monthly fee to play them. It was advantageous to play in teams (sometimes called a guild) as it improved game play satisfaction tremendously. In fact, certain quests in some games cannot be completed by someone playing by himself. The problem with MMORPGs is that it took up a lot of time and dedication if you wanted to be good at it and it required you to upgrade your hardware every once in a while if you wanted to keep up with the latest games. The monthly fee also meant that most of us couldn't afford to play more than one game at a time.
Now we see the emergence of what is known as Multiplayer Browser Games. These games are usually free and are played from your web browser and don't require any additional files to be installed to your computer. Besides being free, the advantage of these addictive games is that they don't require frequent upgrades to your computer and can be played anywhere anytime, so long as you have access to the internet. This means that you can even play from your office so long as your boss is not looking! Since they are free, most of us play more than one game at a time. Some of the more popular games, such as Mafia Wars, have millions of players all over the world.
Multiplayer Browser Games can be complex and it's common to see players discussing these games all over the internet. Mafia Wars strategy for example, is a hot topic among gamers today and it's not uncommon to see players discussing how to find important items in the game such as the Mafia Wars untraceable cellphone!
Pvp online
Player vs player competition has been an essential part of almost every western MMORPG released. Though PvP isn't as popular in Asian MMORPG games, it exist in online games like 9Dragons and Perfect World. Fighting another player is always more engaging than fighting monsters or even fighting a boss, as there's a distinct sense of challenge ; a sense of competition, as the victor would identify who the better player is.
No need to request a duel or teleport off into a special area designated for dueling. You were able to fight just about anywhere you wished to. The game's PvP was also unique, as the game's PvP combat relied entirely on skill instead of whoever had the best items. The difference between the best item in the game and the worst was nearly negligible, which made an even playing field for everyone. The failing to Ultima Online's balanced PvP system is the game's uninteresting PvE experience, where monsters were troubled with dumb synthetic intelligence and posed no threat even to the weakest players.
to attract new players who preferred PvP, Everquest made a special server elected as a "PvP" server where players could attack each other nearly anywhere in the game world. PvP duels and combat never became quite as popular in Everquest as it did in Ultima Online as the game wasn't designed for balanced PvP combat, as Everquest didn't impose level limitations on items, which led on to the player with the best apparatus to often win the fight.
Players would select a faction on creating their character and fight to manage strategic outposts in an elected "PvP zone". Each realm, or faction, fought to assume control of the game's relics. Each relic provided an in game stat bonus for the entire realm's population if they were able to take control of that particular relic. Dark Age of Camelot was also the 1st that successfully fused siege weaponry with PvP combat. Realms would have to use catapults and rams to knock down the walls of foes outposts to thieve that particular faction's relics.
Today's MMORPG games provide a really limited PvP experience as newer games aren't being designed with PvP under consideration , but are rather being tossed into the mix to simply add another feature. To participate in PvP combat on regular servers, players need to wait in line to be teleported to a special combat section called a battleground where skill means nothing, as there are way too many players in a single battlefield at once for any player to have a powerful effect on the fights result. Duels and fights are virtually always decided by whoever has the best battlegear. I'm still waiting for a game that has both a balanced PvP system and an equally fun PvE system.

Why Are There No Popular Ultima Online -Like MMOs?
eldavojohn writes "I have a slightly older friend who played through the glory days of Ultima Online. Yes, their servers are still up and running, but he often waxes nostalgic about certain gameplay functions of UO that he misses. I must say that these aspects make me smile and wonder what it would be like to play in such a world — things like housing, thieving and looting that you don't see in ...
