Farewell to Manzanar: A True Story of Japanese American Experience During and After the World War II Internment List Price: $6.99 Sale Price: $3.25 |
|
Summary:Jeanne Wakatsuki was seven years old in 1942 when her family was uprooted from their home and sent to live at Manzanar internment camp--with 10,000 other Japanese Americans. Along with searchlight towers and armed guards, Manzanar ludicrously featured cheerleaders, Boy Scouts, sock hops, baton twirling lessons and a dance band called the Jive Bombers who would play any popular song except the nation's #1 hit: "Don't Fence Me In."Farewell to Manzanar is the true story of one spirited Japanese-American family's attempt to survive the indignities of forced detention . . . and of a native-born American child who discovered what it was like to grow up behind barbed wire in the United States.About the Author:•Jeanne Wakatsuki Houston and James D. For their teleplay for the NBC television drama based on Farewell to Manzanar, they received the prestigious Humanitas Prize.Author:Jeanne Wakatsuki Houston^James D. Terminal Man |
|
Harry has a problem. Ever since getting in a car accident, he's suffered from "thought seizures," violent fits in which he attacks other people. He used to be an artificial intelligence researcher, which may explain why he targets anyone who either works on machines or who acts like a machine--mechanics, gas-station attendants, prostitutes, exotic dancers. But there's hope: he can become part machine himself, undergoing "Stage 3," an experimental procedure implanting 40 electrodes deep in the pleasure centers of his brain. The surgery is successful, and blissful pulses of electricity short-circuit Harry's seizures. That is, until Harry figures out how to overload himself with the satisfying jolts and escapes on a murderous rampage. One of Crichton's earliest, playing ably on '70s fears of computers and mind control. --Paul Hughes From the bestselling author of Jurassic Park, Timeline, and Sphere comes a neurological thriller about the dangers of cutting-edge medical experimentation.  Harry Benson suffers from violent seizures. So violent that he often blackouts when they take hold. Shortly after severely beating two men during an episode, the police escort Benson to a Los Angeles hospital for treatment. There, Dr. Roger McPherson, head of the prestigious Neuropsychiatric Research Unit, is convinced he can cure Benson with an experimental procedure that would place electrodes deep in his brainâs pleasure centers, effectively short-circuiting Harry's seizures with pulses of bliss. The surgery is successful, but while Benson is in recovery, he discovers how to trigger the pulses himself. To make matters worse his violent impulses have only grown, and he soon escapes the hospital with a deadly agenda. . . From the bestselling author of Jurassic Park, Timeline, and Sphere comes a neurological thriller about the dangers of cutting-edge medical experimentation. Final Exam: A Surgeon's Reflections on Mortality (Vintage) List Price: $15.00 Sale Price: $4.44 |
|
A brilliant transplant surgeon brings compassion and narrative drama to the fearful reality that every doctor must face: the inevitability of mortality. When Pauline Chen began medical school, she dreamed of saving lives. What she could not predict was how much death would be a part of her work. Almost immediately, she found herself wrestling with medicineâs most profound paradoxâthat a profession premised on caring for the ill also systematically depersonalizes dying. Final Exam follows Chen over the course of her education and practice as she struggles to reconcile the lessons of her training with her innate sense of empathy and humanity. A superb addition to the best medical literature of our time. |

Zodiac 50 Game Pack Vol. 1 |
|
Features 50 DOS/Windows Shareware Games |
Fender is one of the leading musical companies and has a dedicated experience in making musical instruments. Clarence Leonidas Fender founded this organization in 1946. It has gained a worldwide recognition throughout the years in making the musical instruments. One can also say that Fender is the most reputable corporate to create the best guitars in the world. Currently, their headquarters is located in Scottsdale, Arizona, with their manufacturing amenities located throughout the world.
Fender has produced a great line of guitars through the times and among them is the '65 Mustang. The Fender '65 Mustang is an electric guitar and was originally introduced in 1964 as a remodel of the Fender's student models, which included Musicmaster and Duo-Sonic. The Fender '65 Mustang was made until 1982 and then was reissued again in the 1990.
The offset waist of the Fender '65 Mustang is evocative of the Jazzmaster, but apart from that, it closely follows the style of the Musicmaster and Duo-Sonic. When Mustang was released, it got a huge recognition and on the basis of that the two models, Musicmaster and the Duo-Sonic were remodeled and they were named Musicmaster II and Duo-Sonic II.
The '65 Mustang, Musicmaster II and Duo-Sonic II had 21 fret 22.5-inch neck or 3/4 scale neck or another adjustment of a 22 fret 24-inch neck, but the most popular one was the 24-inch neck. The 24-inch neck is considered perfect for people who have small hands and it makes it ideal for them to have an excellent control and stability as well as it also augments the capability to use the tremolo arm for upbends.
This guitar had been customized for a great legend, Kurt Cobain, who used this short scale with an exclusive and extremely direct tremolo arm to give his best performances ever. This guitar has undergone customizations and upgrades to offer the best results.
There was also another brand that was introduced known as the Fender Mustang Bass in 1964. The design of this guitar was made with a similar offset body design to the '65 Mustang guitar and along with it a short 30-inch scale was used. Other guitars that had the look of Mustang Bass body and neck included Fender Musicmaster Bass and Fender Bronco Bass.
The Fender '65 Mustang guitar has two-angled single coil pickups and each has a neighboring on-off-on switch along with a master tone and a volume control. Interestingly enough, the '65 Mustang does not have a pickup selector or a circuit selector switch but just has the two pickup switches that allow the pickups to be used individually or in parallel. The phase of the selected pickup is reversed by the second on position, which permits the pickups to be in either in or out phase when used in parallel. This is a new feature introduced than the one created in 1964.
This made a remarkable effect in noise reduction as when both the pickups were floating with respect to ground and this made it probable to change the wiring by placing the pickups in series either in or out phase. This switching can be replaced by a conventional pickup change switch that is being provided with the Duo-Sonic, which only requires slight modification in the pickguard and frees the two eight-terminal pickup switches for different uses.
Another very interesting feature introduced in the Mustang was the Fender Dynamic Vibrato tailpiece, which along with the floating bridge constitutes the Mustang Trem or Stang Trem. This concept is taken from the tremolo developed for the Jazzmaster, whereas on the Mustang, the saddles consist of only a single string slot, whereas on the other Fender guitars there are multiple slots that allow limited modification of string spacing.
Last but not the least, the great musicians who have played on Mustang are Kurt Cobain, Mark Arm, Billy Corgan, Adrian Belew, Graham Coxon and a lot of other names who are the legends and have made a huge contribution in the world of music.

Vintage Beachhouse Perfect Seattle Hideaway
We wanted to find a cozy, romantic beach bungalow with its own beach on an island with thick forests and a lush natural landscape, so we headed for the San Juan Islands, right? Well not exactly. If you live in the Seattle area think a little closer - think Bainbridge Island.
There is a reason those people who live on Bainbridge Island pay through the nose for daily ferry commutes and put up with the relative inconvenience of timing any trip to Seattle so that there is a minimal wait at the ferry terminal. They go through all of that because Puget Sound really does buffer them from the Big City and helps them maintain a completely different lifestyle. Island living is just different - it's slower, it's quieter, there are fewer people and, for many island residents, their homes are hidden in thick woods under a forest canopy that makes them feel like they're about the only people on earth. Others enjoy mesmerizing views of the sound from their waterfront homes.
Visitors can share some of that lifestyle by hopping the Bainbridge Island ferry, which runs at least every hour and sometimes more often that that. You drive onto the ferry down at the Seattle Waterfront and, just a half hour later, drive off in Eagle Harbor, which might just as well be a tiny town in the San Juans. The change in scenery is almost magical.
We had been searching for a beach hideaway someplace close to Seattle that was easy to get to, yet a total change from the Big City. We have fond memories of visits years ago we paid to a tiny beach house on the south side of Vashon just a 15-minute ferry ride from Point Defiance Park. We were looking for the same kind of solitude and access to the beach where we knew we would spend countless hours exploring the shoreline or reading good books as we sat atop a log or beach chair looking up from our pages every now and then to gaze at incredible Puget Sound.
A thorough search of the internet turned up some possibilities on Bainbridge Island and one that stood out was advertised as a "Bainbridge Island Beach Cottage." As we looked into it further, the description hit all the right buttons for us - it was a "classic 1930's cabin" and on Pleasant Beach just a few miles across the island from the ferry terminal. From the photos, there was no better word to describe the cabin than charming.
We called to make reservations a month or so ahead but we noticed right away that the booking calendar on this cabin was getting pretty full for the June time period we were seeking. Our schedule allowed us to slip in for a Wednesday night which was indeed open. Just the fact that the cottage was booked most weekends confirmed for us we were making the right choice.
Our ferry trip to Bainbridge was so fast we didn't even bother to get out of the car. Unlike the Anacortes-San Juan Islands run - where we always make a point to walk around the ferry and get amazing photos of the islands as well as enjoy a snack or drink - the Bainbridge ferry ride is over almost before it begins. Depending on when you arrive, however, you may need to add another 30 to 60 minutes wait time at the Seattle waterfront before boarding your ferry.
We came across a pizza place just off the ferry. We ordered our pizza - which was ready in only 15 minutes - and drove another 10 minutes to the cottage. It was easy to find and, unlike some lodgings you see on the internet, this place was everything we thought it would be. We opened the door to a one-room cottage (plus bathroom and closet) that included a kitchen, table and dining area, a quasi-living room seating area, and a queen bed - everything decorated in beige or yellow or blue and white with a knotty pinewood floor. The kitchen was complete with coffeemaker, microwave, dishes and silverware, stove, refrigerator - everything we would need.
After finishing our pizza we began to realize how special the grounds were. The cabin has an old-fashioned porch and a couple of rocking chairs that are perfect for enjoying a picture postcard view of the expansive green lawn and, beyond that, the water of Puget Sound. Fir trees and shrubbery surround three sides of the cottage, while lilacs and other flower variations add highlights to the lawn. Interestingly, the owners of the cottage live right next door in their own well-maintained home of about the same vintage.
We took a walk out to the beach area where, with the tide out, it's possible to walk entirely around the inlet. The cottage had met our expectations and was just the kind of hideaway we had been looking for. But we also wanted to see something of Bainbridge Island.
The island has several local and state parks that have been set aside to allow residents access to the beach, and to enjoy some of the wooded areas of the island. We stopped by Fay Bainbridge State Park, where we found it almost unused during our midweek visit. It wasn't for lack of appeal - this park has great views of the Mainland and even the skyscrapers of Seattle. This park has long wide beaches, driftwood galore, and plenty of spots to picnic.
But the piece de resistance of our trip to Bainbridge was a visit to the Bloedel Reserve - something we had heard about while living many years in the Northwest but had never had the chance to visit. The Bloedel Reserve is 150 acres of forest and gardens that were set aside by lumber baron Prentice Bloedel and his wife, Virginia. While at first curious about the need for reservations, once we got to the reserve we understood the reason why. The experience just would not be the same if too many people were in the reserve at once.
After calling ahead for our reservation, we arrived at the gatehouse where the hostess gave us a map and a brief explanation about the layout of the reserve. We began our two-hour visit by following the well-marked trail that led into a meadow and then into thick woods - primarily Douglas fir, red cedar and hemlock -- that seemed like the trees had been there since the beginning of time. If you wondered what the forest in Hansel and Gretel looked like, this was probably it.
The trail weaves through several different attractions in the reserve including a Zen garden, a moss garden, a reflection pool and several ponds. About half way through the tour, guests can tour the first floor of the former Bloedel house, a French chateau-style building overlooking Port Madison Bay and other points of Puget Sound.
The quiet solitude of the reserve was the perfect conclusion for our brief island getaway and provided a stark contrast for our short ferry ride back to reality.
AT A GLANCE
WHERE: Bainbridge Island is due west of Seattle, just across the waters of Puget Sound.
WHAT: Bainbridge is best-known as a bedroom community of Seattle, but the change in scenery and relative lack of development on the island also make it an attractive getaway or vacation spot.
WHEN: Any time of the year, although book well in advance for summer. Bainbridge shares Seattle's climate that can be cold at times but is generally temperate. You'll probably see a few raindrops, but rainy days only add to that cozy feeling of your bungalow.
WHY: Bainbridge Island is an easy getaway for Seattle area residents and visitors, yet offers a totally different world on the other side of the water. State parks and waterfront lodgings are plentiful. You can go shopping in historic Winslow and also there are several highly recommended restaurants.
HOW: For more information on this beach cottage, phone 206-999-9655 or visit www.bainbridgebeachcottage.com For more information on travel to Bainbridge Island, call the Kitsap Peninsula Visitor and Convention Bureau at 800-416-5615 or go to www.visitkitsap.com. You can also find maps and information near the ferry terminal at the Chamber of Commerce Visitor Information Center.

Vintage TV has NO Inputs?
I have an old antenna television and the only inputs is has are a few terminals for antenna leads. Is there any way I can convert this to anything (preferably RCA). I'm trying to use it as a production monitor for filmmaking. Thanks!
The problem with UHF to RCA is that I'm only getting hits for UHF Coaxial, which it not what the TV has. It only has screw terminals.
You need an adapter for it. I know what you are talking about. I use to have tvs like that. You can get one at radio shack.
this what you need:
