A Sporting Review Of 2009
With the 2010 World Cup in South Africa fast approaching, the football and sporting world can briefly reflect on the happenings of 2009; with Real Madrid splashing out £80 million and Usain Bolt breaking a record, the number of things that happened in 2009 was incredible.
Barcelona became the second club to achieve a “treble†of trophies after they beat Manchester United to win the Champions League, having already won the La Liga title and La Copa Del Rey. Manchester United accomplished the equivalent in England back in 1999.
Real Madrid made records twice in the same week after they first signed Ricardo Kaka from Milan for £68.5 million and then Cristiano Ronaldo from Manchester United for £80 million. These two record breaking signings overshadowed Barcelona’s accomplishment of a Treble. Kaka was involved in the Brazilians triumph in the Confederations Cup back in the summer of 2009. This victory set the Brazilian team up as favourites for the World Cup this year, but since then; Spain have become the new favourites after Brazil was put in the “Group of Death,†along with Portugal, North Korea and Cote d’Ivoire. The hosts South Africa are in a group with France, and with a prize of $31 million (£18.7 million) for the winning team, it’s no surprise that Thierry Henry took matters into his own hands.
In Rugby, the Rugby World Cup Sevens was played in Dubai, and won by Wales, while in Tennis Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal both had victories in the Grand Slams, however Federer was slightly more successful with 2/4 Grand Slams. Nadal could only win the Australian Open and Juan Martin Del Potro beat Federer to win the US Open. Serena Williams also won 2/4 Grand Slams with the French Open going to Svetlana Kuznetsova and the US Open going to Kim Clijsters. Jenson Button became the 14th British Formula One World Champion after winning the 2009 season with one race to spare. England Cricketers beat Australia to win the Ashes 2009. The Australians will be looking to win the trophy back in November 2010.
Tiger Woods failed to win a Major Championship in 2009, but he won the BMW Championship and was the leading prize winner for 2009 PGA Tour, with $10.5 million. The Ryder Cup returns for 2010, being played this year in Wales. New boy Rory McIlroy won the Dubai Desert Classic Golf tournament and had high winnings figure for 2009; $5 million. Usain Bolt set yet another world record, this time at the World Championships in Berlin. His time; 9.58 seconds, more than a tenth of a second off his previous best from Beijing, and on this occasion, he ran the whole way, without celebrating 15 metres from the end and with both of his shoe laces tied. In Darts, Phil “The Power†Taylor won his 15th World Championship at the start of 2010. And finally; Boxing, David Haye beat a 7 foot tall Russian, Nikolai Valuev to become the WBA World Heavyweight Champion, his next fight is a mandatory defence of that title against John Ruiz in April.
So the major sporting event to look forward to is the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, but other events include, David Haye’s title defence, The Ryder Cup and all the Grand Slams from Tennis, and let’s not to forget the Winter Olympics in Vancouver, that are on throughout February.
