Even though he has released nine albums of his own in more than two decades in the music business, Joe Henry may best be known as the producer of soul man Solomon Burke's 2002 comeback record, Don't Give Up on Me. Now Henry hopes to do for soul what Ry Cooder's Buena Vista Social Club did for Cuban music, convening R&B legends Allen Toussaint, Billy Preston Irma Thomas, Mavis Staples and Ann Peebles for one week at Hollywood's Capitol Studios. But rather than rehashing the past in individual sessions, Henry assembled a house band (led by Toussaint) and demanded newly written or freshly interpreted songs. While her most recent solo release Have A Little Faith makes Staples appearance here less critical, her duet with Preston (whose organ playing is splendid) on "That's Enough"is a highlight. But the real stars are Thomas and the piano-driven rendition of Tom Jans' "Loving Arms,"and the underrated Peebles, who reinvents Bob Dylan's "Tonight I'll Be Staying Here With You" from Nashville crooning to Beale Street believable. --Scott Holter

It's tough not to make a parlor game out of Nick Lachey's What's Left of Me. Five points if you knew that Mr. Jessica Simpson was more than just beefcake, but a pop star in his own right. Ten if you recalled that he was once a member of 98 Degrees, not Backstreet Boys or 'N Sync. Twenty if you can get through these 12 tracks without wincing. It's not that the singing's no good--Lachey's grip on boy-band whispers and wails is still sturdy enough to send most 12-year-olds swooning, and he works in a fine falsetto on final number "Resolution"--it's the song titles that sting. "I Can't Hate You Anymore," "On Your Own," "Outside Looking In," and pretty much every other track references, with soap-operatic dippiness, the singer's breakup with his Daisy Dukes-wearing-ex. Instead of making a stand for himself as an under-appreciated artist who's capable of cranking out thoughtful, far-reaching work, he makes it harder than ever to take him seriously. And that's despite the fact that he racks up eight co-writer credits here. Add in an obvious bid to sound current against a contemporary pop landscape in the midst of a boy-band backlash, and the case can be made that Lachey's once 98-degree heat index has dipped way down. Attempts at emo ("Run to Me," "You're Not Alone") don't work, and a few unmistakable stabs at Ashlee- and Jessica-styled vocal hiccups throughout seem contrived, if not downright weird. Still, tabloid junkies should find a lot to love in all the dirty-laundry airing, and anybody who can't resist a photo spread of broken man baring his anguish (as well as a good portion of his chest) will want to pick it up for the pinup possibilities. --Tammy La Gorce

With The Return of the King, the greatest fantasy epic in film history draws to a grand and glorious conclusion. Director Peter Jackson's awe-inspiring adaptation of the Tolkien classic The Lord of the Rings could never fully satisfy those who remain exclusively loyal to Tolkien's expansive literature, but as a showcase for physical and technical craftsmanship it is unsurpassed in pure scale and ambition, setting milestone after cinematic milestone as the brave yet charmingly innocent Hobbit Frodo (Elijah Wood) continues his mission to Mordor, where he is destined to destroy the soul-corrupting One Ring of Power in the molten lava of Mount Doom. While the heir to the kingdom of Men, Aragorn (Viggo Mortensen), endures the massive battle at Minas Tirith with the allegiance of the elf Legolas (Orlando Bloom), dwarf Gimli (John Rhys-Davies) and the great wizard Gandalf (Ian McKellen), Frodo and stalwart companion Samwise Gamgee (Sean Astin) must survive the schizoid deceptions of Gollum, who remains utterly convincing as a hybrid of performance (by Andy Serkis) and subtly nuanced computer animation. Jackson and cowriters Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens have much ground to cover; that they do so with intense pacing and epic sweep is impressive enough, but by investing greater depth and consequence in the actions of fellow Hobbits Merry (Dominic Monaghan) and Pippin (Billy Boyd), they ensure that Return of the King maintains the trilogy's emphasis on intimate fellowship. While several major characters appear only briefly, and one (Christopher Lee's evil wizard, Saruman) relegated entirely to the extended version on DVD, Jackson is to be commended for his editorial acumen; like Legolas the archer, his aim as a filmmaker is consistently true, and he remains faithful to Tolkien's overall vision. If Return suffers from too many endings, as some critic suggested, it's only because the epic's conclusion is so loyally inclusive of the actors--most notably Astin--who gave it such strength to begin with. By ending the LOTR trilogy with noble integrity and faith in the power of imaginative storytelling, The Return of the King, like its predecessors, will stand as an adventure for the ages. --Jeff Shannon

Doing for awkward teens what the Spy Kids movies did for grade-schoolers, Agent Cody Banks is a wish-fulfillment adventure for James Bond wannabes who are still too young to shave. Just in time for puberty's curtain call, Malcolm in the Middle's Frankie Muniz stars in the title role as a 15-year-old recruit to the CIA's youth-agent program, who gets what millions of men desire: a face full of Angie Harmon's cleavage. (It's just for laughs; the sexy Law & Order alumnus plays Cody's CIA handler, but you've got to admit this Bond Girl with a boy thing is a bit perverse.) Otherwise, the movie's a low-rent Bond clone from the director of One Night at McCool's, with a pair of twisted villains (Ian McShane, Arnold Vosloo) threatening to unleash stolen "Nanobot" technology that can ruin everyone's day. It's barely fun enough to be worthwhile, but the best gag (at 007's expense) is buried in the soundtrack, when a CIA receptionist announces, "Will the owner of a silver Aston Martin please report to security... you are parked in a handicapped zone." More ambitious in scope than any of its other animated films (before or to come), Disney's 1940 Fantasia was a dizzying, magical, and highly enjoyable marriage of classical music and animated images. Fantasia 2000 features some breathtaking animation and storytelling, and in a few spots soars to wonderful high points, but it still more often than not has the feel of walking in its predecessor's footsteps as opposed to creating its own path. A family of whales swimming and soaring to Respighi's The Pines of Rome is magical to watch, but ends all too soon; a forest sprite's dance of life, death, and rebirth to Stravinsky's The Rite of Spring too clearly echoes the original Fantasia's Night on Bald Mountain/Ave Maria sequence. But when it's on target, Fantasia 2000 is glorious enough to make you giddy. Hans Christian Andersen's "The Steadfast Tin Soldier" is a perfect narrative set to Shostakovich's Piano Concerto No. 2, and Donald Duck's guest appearance as the assistant to Noah (of ark fame) set to Elgar's Pomp and Circumstance marches is a welcome companion piece (though not an equal) to The Sorcerer's Apprentice, the one original Fantasia piece included here. The high point of Fantasia 2000, though, is a fantastic day-in-the-life sequence of 1930s New York City set to Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue and animated in the style of cartoonist Al Hirschfeld; it's a perfect melding of music, story, and animation. Let's hope future Fantasias (reportedly in the works) take a cue from the best of this compilation. The music is provided by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, conducted by James Levine, interspersed with negligible intros by Steve Martin, Bette Midler, Itzhak Perlman, James Earl Jones, and others. --Mark Englehart

Eidos Interactive's HITMAN: CONTRACTS for the Pc Games is the third game in the HITMAN series, which revolves around the assassin known only as 47. The game takes place as a series of flashbacks 47 sees as he lies dying. During these flashbacks, players experience a wide range of action and stealth missions as they shoot their way across the world. The flashback missions 47 sees during his injury-induced visions include some of the missions from the original game and some new missions, although the original missions have all been upgraded and expanded, so returning players won't feel like they're repeating previous games. Missions include eliminating a pair of brother assassins, disrupting a Russian arms deal, and escaping an asylum as he moves across the globe. Characters tend to speak in their native languages, as well, adding to the international flavor. 47 has many different abilities and weapons available. He can move stealthily, steal clothing to disguise himself, and use a number of poisons in addition to guns to take out his enemies. In many places, players have the option of accomplishing a mission using stealth or attacking enemies head-on, depending on their playing style. There are three difficulty modes, as well, so novice and experienced players can both enjoy the game. Shooter fans will find HITMAN: CONTRACTS a fun, entertaining game with a distinct noir style to it.
