Translators need to admit honestly that some verses can grammatically be rendered in different, or even opposite, ways. They need to note these texts clearly in their translation.
For example, I have never seen a translation honest enough to admit that (grammatically speaking) John 1:1 CAN be translated either "the word was God" OR "the word was a god." No translation I know of uses one of these in the text and the other as an alternate reading in a footnote.
