A young boy named Owen learns the startling truth about dogs: They're actually from outer space, sent here to rule mankind. A canine agent from the star Sirius (voiced by Matthew Broderick) gets rescued from the pound by Owen (Liam Aiken) and named Hubble. As Hubble desperately tries to train a motley crew of dogs from Owen's neighborhood to behave like conquerors before the Greater Dane arrives and decides the planet's fate, the outer space pooch slowly bonds with Owen and discovers why dogs may have joined forces with humans instead of dominating them. Good Boy! will charm dog lovers in particular, but the movie has enough clever touches to engage most viewers, and it manages a sweet tone without turning cloyingly saccharine. Featuring the voices of Carl Reiner, Brittany Murphy, Delta Burke, Donald Faison, and--of all people--Vanessa Redgrave as the Greater Dane. --Bret Fetzer

Digable Planets deliberately disavowed the toughness of hip-hop culture: the trio's leader called himself Butterfly, his foil Ladybug purred like Eartha Kitt, and they produced hooks out of lines like "We're just babies, man." Despite occasional flashes of sorrow (like the pro-choice recitation "La Femme Fétal"), the group's happy and laidback on this debut, with tracks made out of old jazz records and finger-snaps, and words that draw on 50s hipster slang. Reachin' spawned the Grammy-winning single "Rebirth Of Slick (Cool Like Dat)," and after this album, their joyous Blue Note-and-black-lights bounce lost some of its novelty. --Douglas Wolk

AIR BUDDIES - DVD Movie
The canine star of Air Bud and its host of sequels is on the screen again, but this time Buddy, his girlfriend Molly, and their human owners Noah and Henry have their hands and paws full with a litter of five mischievous puppies that talk. From Budderball who's obsessed with food to the meditating Bud-Dha and the dirt-loving Mudbud, each of the puppies is as unique as a sibling can be. When it comes time to adopt the young puppies into new families, humans and dogs alike are distraught and the puppies decide to run away. Enter a spoiled rich boy named Bartleby who wants Air Bud as a birthday present, a dim-witted cousin, and a doltish thug employed by Bartleby's father, and mayhem prevails as Buddy and Molly get dog-napped and Noah, Henry, and the runway puppies all set out to rescue them. As the chase winds over the river, through the woods, to the drive in movie, and straight through the farmyard, slapstick comedy and satire reign and the whole gang learns an important lesson about the value of teamwork, love, and courage. While children ages 3 to 10 will delight in the capers of these cute talking puppies, most adults will find the plot predictable and the action less than riveting. Talent includes Don Knotts, Richard Karn, and Michael Clarke Duncan. --Tami Horiuchi

The latest testosterone-saturated blow-'em-up from producer Jerry Bruckheimer and director Michael Bay (The Rock, Bad Boys) continues Hollywood's millennium-fueled fascination with the destruction of our planet. There's no arguing that the successful duo understands what mainstream American audiences want in their blockbuster movies--loads of loud, eye-popping special effects, rapid-fire pacing, and patriotic flag waving. Bay's protagonists--the eight crude, lewd, oversexed (but lovable, of course) oil drillers summoned to save the world from a Texas-sized meteor hurling toward the earth--are not flawless heroes, but common men with whom all can relate. In this huge Western-in-space soap opera, they're American cowboys turned astronauts. Sci-fi buffs will appreciate Bay's fetishizing of technology, even though it's apparent he doesn't understand it as anything more than flashing lights and shiny gadgets. Smartly, the duo also tries to lure the art-house crowd, raiding the local indie acting stable and populating the film with guys like Steve Buscemi, Billy Bob Thornton, Owen Wilson, and Michael Duncan, all adding needed touches of humor and charisma. When Bay applies his sledgehammer aesthetics to the action portions of the film, it's mindless fun; it's only when Armageddon tackles humanity that it becomes truly offensive. Not since Mississippi Burning have racial and cultural stereotypes been substituted for characters so blatantly--African Americans, Japanese, Chinese, Scottish, Samoans, Muslims, French ... if it's not white and American, Bay simplifies it. Or, make that white male America; the film features only three notable females--four if you count the meteor, who's constantly referred to as a "bitch that needs drillin'," but she's a hell of a lot more developed and unpredictable than the other women characters combined. Sure, Bay's film creates some tension and contains some visceral moments, but if he can't create any redeemable characters outside of those in space, what's the point of saving the planet? --Dave McCoy

I need a quick answer. Out of 2001 and Galaxy Quest, which was your favourite space movie?
I've limited to the two, because I need specific feedback. (BTW I love both films)... but on the one hand you have this visually awesome epic which even the director cannot explain, and on the other hand you have this modern tale of human nature, ranging from total apathy to fan-worship, and the resolution of the two. Plus some go-to-hell special effects. what's your opinion? I need it now!
Cool! Two of my favorite films that are fun to watch for wildly different reason's.
"2001" was for me, a coming of age film. Made at the height of the space race and just before the lunar landings. It showed where we could go and almost how to get there. I couldn't get enough of it when it first came out. Needless to say, it left quite an impression. What happen to space exploration after the end of the Apollo era was quite heartbreaking for me at the time. Only now are we getting back into the swing of things for exploration on a grand scale.
It was also ground breaking in it showed just how boring and spectacular space travel really is. The hand crafted special effects (CGI was barely a dream back then), raised the bar of making an SF to a high art form cinema. Something that George Pal in the 50's only wished he could of done. The technical work behind "2001" open the doors to all sorts of later SF films and is still the benchmark that other films and shows try to archive.
"Galaxy Quest" is nearly the opposite to "2001". It doesn't take itself seriously. It spoofs nearly every SF cliché ever thought of. But its done with great care and it shows what a good script and acting crew can do for a film. Its a hoot to watch (its a rainy day favorite at our star parties).
Now, I would go a step further and ask you to watch "Forbidden Planet" (which is partly based on the play, "King Lear") and compare it to the above two films and see how far the SF film has come.
Now as an aside. I'm also a huge fan of "Mystery Science Theater 3000". And have quite the selection of 50's and 60's era SF films (the good, the bad and the awful).
Cosmic Log: Sizing up the space races
Science editor Alan Boyle's Weblog: NASA's new vision for spaceflight is getting mixed reviews, primarily because there's no clear destination in sight. Should it be Mars? Or does an asteroid actually make more sense?
Thanks for visiting!
