what does the socket do in a motherboard?
I was canvasing for M.Boards for a new setup. and i am at amatuer level of knowing hardware. right now i am curious about the sockets i see in the specs of a motherboards i see intel socket 478, intel socket 775, AMD socket A and lots more but i dont know what these sockets do, what are they for help me on this.

right now, intel uses Socket 775, while AMD uses mainly AM2, with lower end CPUs using 939 and extremely high-end using Socket F/L1/4x4/1207
if you want an intel CPU (Core 2 Duo/Quad/Extreme, Pentium 4/D, Celeron D) you want a Socket 775
if you want an AMD CPU (Athlon 64 X2, Phenom X4), i would say a Socket AM2, because it offers the most upgradability
