Ladies & Gentlemen: The Best of George Michael List Price: $15.99 Sale Price: $12.77 |
|
Bathroom escapades aside, there's no denying that George Michael has been responsible for some of the biggest party jams of the '80s and '90s. Have you ever noticed what happens to a room when "Faith" erupts from the speakers? Aside from the funk-fueled "Fastlove," the material from his most recent album, Older, is well and truly overshadowed here by the megahits from days gone by. The first disc starts off slow, with "Careless Whisper" and his remake of "I Can't Make You Love Me" the only real high points among otherwise bland ballads. It's disc 2 that exudes the essence of Michael, with "Fastlove," "Too Funky," and "Freedom 90" providing a nonstop dance-athon, and "I Want Your Sex" and "Faith" picking up the slack. The package also includes his rather unexciting (but hugely popular) duets with Queen and Elton John, his perfect pop pairing with Aretha Franklin, and two new tracks. Set aside some serious time for this one, folks. The hits don't stop. --Rebecca Wallwork All products are BRAND NEW and factory sealed. Fast shipping and 100% Satisfaction Guaranteed. |

Beethoven for Babies: Brain Training for Little Ones List Price: $7.98 Sale Price: $3.99 |
|
For the parent looking to ease their child into a familiarity with classical music, this is a very well chosen set of Beethoven works. It begins with a generous selection of airs composed late in the composer's life. The presence of the flute as the lead instrument on these selections has a soothing quality that moves the ear in an ideally subtle way, especially as it gives way to the more excited piano sonata pieces. Zoltán Kocsis's reading of "Pathétique" is followed by Claudio Arrau's take on the 7th, 15th, and 18th sonatas and Sviatoslav Richter's lyrical take on the 20th ("Pastoral"). Programmed amidst the piano pieces, which are great studies in dynamics and musical spacing, are some fine orchestral snippets, none longer than five minutes. The collection does a fine balancing act, condensing works that don't inherently lend themselves to shortened renditions and carefully managing moods, entry, and egress to each segment. This is fine anthology work. --Andrew Bartlett No Description Available.Genre: Classical MusicMedia Format: Compact DiskRating: Release Date: 11-AUG-1998 |

Intimate Universe: The Human Body [VHS] List Price: $59.98 |
|
What an amazing amalgamation of chemicals we humans are! Dr. Robert Winston's visceral exploration of the physical processes of the body is an enlightening, exciting, and sometimes startling testimonial to just how complicated an organism the human animal is. From the graceful opening shot of naked people ages 1 to 100 standing in a row in a forest, to the painful last days of a man dying of cancer, this video will make you regard the human body with an awesome new respect. Often using himself as a subject, Dr. Winston examines how the physiology of our bodies works. Tiny, fiber-optic cameras make a journey down an intestinal track look like a ride on a candy-pink roller coaster. Advanced medical imaging techniques used by the filmmakers make it possible to see and understand the body in a whole new way, such as when a 3-D image of Dr. Winston's head is sliced open to reveal the miniscule bones of the inner ear. Yet for all its advanced technology, the series does not neglect the "human" side of our bodies. Dr. Winston pours buckets of salt water into the ocean as he marvels that we are the only animals that cry. The series, shot over a period of two years, is loosely framed around the lives of a group of people who narrate their emotional responses to the physical changes their bodies are undergoing. In one episode, a young girl goes through puberty, in another an elderly couple reflects on their aging bodies. Perhaps the most moving scene is that of the birth of a baby, shown from inside the mother. It is almost like you are taking this most difficult journey with the infant as he travels toward the beginning of his life. Intimate Universe gives us a glimpse at what our bodies are doing at any given moment, whether at work or at play. You will come away from this video with a new appreciation for how much is happening right inside you, and how effortless the efficient machinery of our bodies makes it seem. --Michelle Riggen Four-volume set which explores all phases of human development from conception to old age. Volume 1: Life Story, Everyday Miracle ("Miracle of Birth" as an individual release); Volume 2:First Steps, Raging Teens; Volume 3: Brainpower, As Times Go By; Volume 4: The End of Life, The Making of the Human Body. |

Sherlock: Season One List Price: $34.98 Sale Price: $24.94 |
|
In the wake of Guy Ritchie's reimagining, the BBC puts its own stamp on Arthur Conan Doyle's sleuth--and sets him in a London filled with cell phones and laptops. In the pilot, director Paul McGuigan (a keen visual stylist) introduces Sherlock Holmes (Atonement's Benedict Cumberbatch) as a "high-functioning sociopath" and Dr. John Watson (The Office's Martin Freeman) as an army veteran with posttraumatic stress disorder. Through a mutual friend, the two become flatmates at 221B Baker Street (Una Stubbs plays their landlady). Holmes, who consults with Scotland Yard inspector Lestrade (Rupert Graves) on his trickier cases, drafts Watson to assist him. In "Study in Pink," four people commit suicide by poison. When Holmes sets out to establish a link, he falls right into the culprit's clutches. Other cases concern a smuggling operation ("The Blind Banker") and a mad bomber ("The Great Game"). Though he doesn't make a formal entrance until episode three, an infamous figure from Sherlock's future has a hand in each mystery, while the detective's brother, Mycroft (co-creator Mark Gatiss), first appears when he tries to hire Watson for a case of his own, an offer that gives the good doctor pause. Through his job at a medical office, Watson also meets Sarah (Zoe Telford), who becomes his girlfriend. Part of the fun of Jeremy Brett's Holmes (and Agatha Christie's Poirot) came from the period details, so this update takes a little getting used to--as does the occasional mumbled line--but Cumberbatch and Freeman share an enjoyable Odd Couple rapport, marked by flashes of deadpan wit, which compensates for the absence of deerstalker caps (Holmes favors scarves) and journals (Watson maintains a website). Extras include commentary on the finale, the original pilot, and a featurette, in which cocreator Steven Moffat (Doctor Who) notes that Cumberbatch was his only choice for the title role. --Kathleen C. Fennessy Two-disc set includes the pilot, "A Study in Pink," "The Blind Banker," and "The Great Game." 7 2/3 hrs. total. Standard; Soundtrack: English Dolby Digital stereo; Subtitles: English; audio commentary; featurette. **4 episodes on 2 discs. 7 2/3 hrs.** |

The Good Wife: The Second Season List Price: $62.99 Sale Price: $21.43 |
|
All 23 episodes from season two--including "Taking Control," "Bad Girls," "Real Deal," "Ham Sandwich," and "Closing Arguments"--are collected in a six-disc set. 16 2/3 hrs. total. Widescreen (Enhanced); Soundtracks: English Dolby Digital 5.1, Dolby Digital stereo, French Dolby Digital stereo; Subtitles: English (SDH), French, Spanish, Portuguese; featurettes; deleted scenes; music videos; bonus footage; more. **23 episodes on 6 discs. 16 2/3 hrs.** The Emmy-nominated second season of The Good Wife presents powerful drama that interweaves passion, politics, family turmoil, and courtroom action and features a talented cast that's bound together by an absolutely thrilling chemistry. Alicia Florrick (Julianna Margulies) has survived the political sex scandal and incarceration of her state's attorney husband Peter (Chris Noth), picked up her career as a lawyer after many years away, and somehow still managed to take an active role in raising her two teenage children. In a situation in which the personal and professional are intimately entangled, Alicia has taken control of her life and blossomed into a strong, confident woman whom others respect. But Alicia's life is complicated. Peter is back home and running for office again, and Alicia is continually butting heads with campaign manager Eli (Alan Cumming) while struggling to figure out just what her relationship with Peter will look like going forward. There's an undeniable attraction between Alicia and her former classmate and current boss Will (Josh Charles), and the law firm they work for is in financial trouble. Alicia's deepening friendship with Kalinda (Archie Panjabi) seems like the one relationship that Alicia can depend on, but Kalinda is an incredibly complex woman with a whole lot of secrets. When Lockhart Gardner merges with another firm, Kalinda acquires a new and worthy adversary in rival investigator Blake (Scott Porter), who quickly teams up with now-prosecutor Cary (Matt Czuchry) to uncover and publicize the dirty details of Kalinda's past. What the two men unearth threatens to irrevocably damage, or perhaps even destroy, the friendship between Alicia and Kalinda. The powerful performances of the cast and the intensity of their emotional connection with one another on screen cannot be overstated--every character, from Alicia to Peter, Kalinda, Will, and Eli, is completely believable and their interactions with one another are simply electric. This season features a host of talented guest stars, including Michael J. Fox, Gary Cole, Rita Wilson, Jerry Stiller, America Ferrera, and Anika Noni Rose. They appear as attorneys, judges, and plaintiffs in a docket of intriguingly complicated legal cases that among them involve a drug kingpin, an alderman, a Nobel prizewinner, a pharmaceutical company, an Internet mogul, a disabled attorney, and a narcoleptic judge. While all of these guest stars give solid performances that really add something to the series, Fox deserves special recognition for the three episodes in which he plays the disabled attorney Louis Canning. Fox's performances feature physical comedy and a simultaneous intelligence that rings true, and the interaction between Canning and Alicia reveals a new and fascinating side to Alicia's character. There are quite a few bonus features sprinkled throughout this six-disc set, the most notable being the three "Real Deal Inside the Episode" segments. These extras examine how hard the talented writers work to create characters that are passionate and continually growing; the demanding process of writing and producing a weekly TV show; and how the creators use music, sound, and visual effects almost impressionistically to create meaningful, memorable moments within each episode. The fairly brief "Conversation with the Kings" is an interesting discussion with co-creators and executive producers Michelle and Robert King about how carefully they craft each episode to advance that week's plot while simultaneously developing each of the characters. There are also a handful of deleted scenes, a 20-minute discussion with the cast and creators that's moderated by Dalton Ross, a glimpse of the season-one DVD release party, some silly behind-the-scenes videos by Alan Cumming, and three campaign music videos that were used in the show. --Tami Horiuchi |

Here are two steps that you can take right now to spark your passion: Find your prime time and get things done now.
1. Find your prime time
Every single one of us has a particular time of day when we are the most alert and productive. You could be an early bird, or a night owl. If you're not sure which particular time of the day it is when you're functioning at your optimum capacity, observe yourself and your state of mind at various times during the coming week.
Do you wake up fresh, energetic and ready to go in the mornings? Do you feel your energy levels peak a few hours after you get up and then peter off as the day goes on? If so, then you're probably more of an early bird. Does it take you some time to get into gear in the morning, but by the time it gets to the evening or night your mind is fully switched on and firing on all cylinders? If so, then you're probably more of a night owl.
Whichever way you lean towards, its important to harness those times for the key tasks in your life - to do what you really enjoy and love so that you maximise your output in those areas. You'll find that as you do this, you'll not expend energy but actually generate a lot of excitement and momentum to do the things that you might not enjoy as much.
2. Get things done now
Another sure way of sparking your passion for life is to create momentum by getting things done. If you've ever felt overwhelmed by the backlog of things that you need to get done, you've probably coped with that feeling of overwhelm with a habit known as procrastination.
Procrastination is simply the attitude that you'll "do it later". It's not a very helpful habit, because it really ends up compounding the problem rather than solving it. When you keep trying to do it later, sooner or later you end up with too much to do and not enough "later".
So how do you avoid a buildup of 'to-dos' and make plenty of free time for your passion activities? Simple - you get things done now without wasting any time. Pick the smallest, easiest task to start with and get that done. Next, do another small and easy task.
Keep doing that, and after completing a few tasks you'll feed good about yourself and build up good momentum for accomplishing the bigger and more challenging tasks. Try not to tackle the entire big task at once, but break it down into smaller, more manageable tasks to handle. And most importantly, once you've gotten a significant task done, make sure that you reward yourself for completing it. That's a great way to reinforce your good behaviour of getting things done.

The Secret to Raising a Smart Child is to be a Smart Parent
Telling your child he is 'smart' does not raise smart children...its better to praise effort and hard work so we realise that we are 'smart' because we work hard...
http://www.sciam.com/article.cfm?id=the-secret-to-raising-smart-kids
Parents, and teachers, can engender a growth mind-set in children by praising them for their effort or persistence (rather than for their intelligence), by telling success stories that emphasize hard work and love of learning, and by teaching them about the brain as a learning machine.
A brilliant student, Jonathan sailed through grade school. He completed his assignments easily and routinely earned As. Jonathan puzzled over why some of his classmates struggled, and his parents told him he had a special gift. In the seventh grade, however, Jonathan suddenly lost interest in school, refusing to do homework or study for tests. As a consequence, his grades plummeted. His parents tried to boost their son’s confidence by assuring him that he was very smart. But their attempts failed to motivate Jonathan (who is a composite drawn from several children). Schoolwork, their son maintained, was boring and pointless.
Our society worships talent, and many people assume that possessing superior intelligence or ability—along with confidence in that ability—is a recipe for success. In fact, however, more than 30 years of scientific investigation suggests that an overemphasis on intellect or talent leaves people vulnerable to failure, fearful of challenges and unwilling to remedy their shortcomings.
The result plays out in children like Jonathan, who coast through the early grades under the dangerous notion that no-effort academic achievement defines them as smart or gifted. Such children hold an implicit belief that intelligence is innate and fixed, making striving to learn seem far less important than being (or looking) smart. This belief also makes them see challenges, mistakes and even the need to exert effort as threats to their ego rather than as opportunities to improve. And it causes them to lose confidence and motivation when the work is no longer easy for them.
Praising children’s innate abilities, as Jonathan’s parents did, reinforces this mind-set, which can also prevent young athletes or people in the workforce and even marriages from living up to their potential. On the other hand, our studies show that teaching people to have a “growth mind-set,” which encourages a focus on effort rather than on intelligence or talent, helps make them into high achievers in school and in life.
.......................................................................................
As a teacher I see many students who start school doing well, and then start having problems, and some become problem students, and I see how this effects the students who consider themselves 'smart' but assume 'smartness' should automatically make them succeed at Studies. We do not focus on the effort needed until it is too late.
Its not the time to tell University students that they need to 'do some study'. Many assume that they can simply pass exams because they are enrolled. The fault lies with the Education System that allows students who do not meet the required grade to pass up into the higher level. The student who has managed to go up the educational ladder without learning anything, thinks he is 'smart' because the school system has simply passed him, because not doing so reflects ultimately on the teacher as a failure, not the student. He knows he has not worked, and assumes that he has passed because he is smart, not because the school was lax in their assessment.
This is what is ultimately behind every uneducated student....parents telling him he is smart, and teachers, and schools, scared they will be penalised if they fail a student.
Maybe its time we all started focusing on our own efforts...teachers too...the student fails to learn because the teaching method has not approached the students way of learning, the student has not worked, and because the student needs to realise that learning does not miraculously happen, that effort is also needed.
The sad part is that learning may not occur, but the student gets a certificate saying he has passed that year or subject.
Right now there are many students going to study in Universities and Higher Level Colleges who do not have the required basic minimum standard, yet they hold basic test scores telling them they have passed their secondary schooling and are ready to continue with their higher studies.
Yes, every student knows they are 'smart' because their doting parents have told them this...and paid for them to attend an University or College that they would never have got in by their own merits, and will continue to pay for them until the student decided they are 'not really set out for this area of study' and will resign and look elsewhere for an easier path in life. The real world does not cater to them as easily as the schools and parents. They will discover this when they try to become a part of it.
Maybe its too late ......it takes a smart parent to raise a smart child...and a smart parent will never have a not smart child.
The answer is one word....Effort
or
two words....Hard Work
Think About It........You have to be smart to have a smart child.

Should we be charging them and or their employers for the cost to send all these emissaries to N. Korea to secure their release?
smart people wouldn't be dicking around in a dangerous neighborhood to start with
Some of the best travel apps for your 'smart' phone
