Can i use a kitchen knife sharpener to a pocket-knife?
I just bought a nice camping knife from walmart and it doesn't seem as sharp as i would like, so can i use a average kitchen knife sharpener to sharpen it?
The answer is yes and no.
Yes, because any sharpener will sharpen a knife, to some degree.
No, because single sharpener is never good enough to sharpen a knife to its full sharpness.
If you have a sharpener with just one or even two different grits it's either too fine to grind a bevel, i.e. takes forever to do that, or if you have just a coarse grit then the edge is too rough and won't last long, let alone being rather dull.
If you don't have experience with sharpening stones, then at the beginning they're not that easy to use, because it takes some training to hold a consistent sharpening angle.
The simplest thing for you to do, would be sandpaper+mousepad.
It's a lot more forgiving method than sharpening stones, plus it's very cheap. You can find precise details here - http://zknives.com/knives/articles/sandpapermousepad.shtml.
But, in short it's as simple as putting sandpaper over a mousepad or some soft surface like that and sharpening on it.
You'll find a few tips on how to keep consistent angles too. Works for stones and sandpaper equally well.
