Book of SCSI 2/E: I/O for the New Millennium

Graphical operating systems went a long way toward improving the usability of Intel-compatible computers, but they only can do so much to sugar coat the underlying hardware design. The Small Computer System Interface (SCSI) standards, however, simplify the hookup and configuration of disks, scanners, and other peripheral devices. In The Book of SCSI, engineer Gary Field and his colleagues explain the SCSI specifications in practical detail, revealing all the information you should need to fix SCSI systems that don't work quite right. The information is up to date, with new coverage of the SCSI-3 specification, expanded RAID-under-SCSI material, and a thorough section on Advanced SCSI Programming Interface (ASPI) programming; all of which makes this new edition more than worth its cover price, even if you own the earlier version. Although it addresses the fundamentals of SCSI configuration, this book's primary value is as a no-kidding electrical engineering and programming text on the low-level characteristics of SCSI communication. This is the book you want if you're involved in designing physical SCSI devices or writing software drivers for SCSI devices. The book goes heavy on tables that list jumper settings, as well as state diagrams and signal references. Despite its commendable depth, it's easy to read and likely contains the answers to your SCSI questions, even if they don't have to do with low-level signaling. --David Wall Topics covered: The Small Computer System Interface (SCSI) family of hardware interconnection standards, viewed mainly (but not entirely) in great detail. An overview of SCSI (with special focus on the SCSI-3 standard), along with coverage of cables and terminators, software device drivers, RAID implementations under SCSI, and troubleshooting hints. The Advanced SCSI Programming Interface (ASPI) tutorial and reference is great, as is the practical comparison of IDE and SCSI disks.
This second edition of The Book of SCSI provides down-to-earth instructions for installing, implementing, utilizing, and maintaining SCSI on a PC. Accessible to readers at all levels, this is the standard reference for anyone working with or maintaining a SCSI system. Along with complete coverage of SCSI-3 and all the latest features, The Book of SCSI: I/O for the New Millennium contains many new and updated features. What's New?New and expanded sections on ASPI programming including a sample utility program A new chapter on SCSI device drivers A CD-ROM with SCSI diagnostic tools and utilities, a searchable copy of the book for quick referencing and the SCSI FAQ, SCSI Quick Start Guide, and SCSI Game Rules Coverage of Ultra2/LVD (Low Voltage Differential), Fibre Channel, RAID, DVD, and more New directions in the SCSI and storage industryA chapter on SCSI test equipment Many new drawings and diagrams of the multitude of SCSI connectors A comprehensive troubleshooting guide What Hasn't ChangedPlain English explanations of the basics of SCSI: how to work with SCSI IDs, LUNs, termination, parity checking, asynchronous and synchronous transfer, bus mastering, caching, and more.Specific instructions on how to add SCSI to your PC that will save you hours of frustration. An understandable explanation of how the SCSI bus works The ASPI programming spec. from Adaptec, Inc.Clear, uncomplicated drawings and diagrams showing various aspects of SCSI hardware systems. Tips, tricks, and troubleshooting help for SCSI systems. An extensive glossary of SCSI terms and a comprehensive index.

Partitions Inaccessibile after Server Exception Error in Windows 2000
After the mini-port drivers, class drivers and SCSI disk are initialized during Windows boot process, the system queries the BIOS for drive translation. The general value returned by most of the SCSI devices is 255 heads and 63 sectors for each track. Windows 2000 uses this value as default when the SCSI adapter BIOS is turned off. Windows NT also performs similar kind of computation while such situations, but uses smaller values. For this reason, you might encounter several issues after you upgrade your system to Windows 2000, when the drive translation feature is turned off. The partition table might get corrupt if you try to alter it anyway, for example when attempting to create or delete a disk partition. However, to restore such partitions, it is suggested to apply a valid data backup or use Partition Recovery Software to extract them.
To exemplify, consider an instance when you try to use Disk Management to delete or create a new logical drive in extended partition of your Windows 2000 based computer. The operation might fail with the below error message:
“The Server Threw an Exception”
You cannot access the logical drives of the extended partition after this error message occurs. The drives are either lost or damaged.
Cause
The error primarily occurs when you use a Windows 2000 system that has been upgraded from Windows NT 4.0. If the drive translation feature is turned off or the drive has been moved to a controller position where no drive translation is performed, the differences in ways Windows 2000 and NT handle drive translation can cause the drives to render inaccessible. This happens because Disk Management needs to perform few modifications in disk partition table.
Solution
-
To prevent such situations from occurring, it is suggested that you install all the latest updates available for your operating system.
-
For already lost and damaged logical drives, you should check your backup to achieve recovery. If no suitable backup is present or its proves invalid for any reason, you need to opt for a Partition Recovery utility. Partition Recovery Software come with advanced scanning algorithms, graphically rich user interface and powerful features that allow for complete recovery results.
Data Recovery Software is a professional and reliable Partition Recovery tool with advanced options and features. It is a safe utility that supports Windows 7 RC1, Vista, XP, 2003 and 2000 based systems. The tool provides you advanced features like Append Header, RAW File Recovery, Save Scan and more.

I got an SCSI host adapter with 68 pin and 50 pin connectors. How can I connect an 80 pin SCSI hard disk drive?
I've tried to connect the hard disk drives with adapters. I put a 68 pin to 80 pin adapter, from the cable to the hard disk. My computer detects and works fine with the Controller Card. However, the computer doesn't detect the hard disk drive. Why isn't my computer detecting the SCSI Hard disk drives. Does any body know about SCSI Hard Drives? Thanks a lot.
Is the hard-drive marked as "self terminating"? If not, does it have two SCSI ports? If so, you may need to get a "SCSI terminator", which is a plug that goes into one of the ports.
SCSI devices connect serially to each other, so that you can chain them together if needed. If you do not terminate the chain, even if there is only one device, then the SCSI port on your computer won't be able to access the devices. Some SCSI devices are known as "self terminating" as they are able to terminate the chain themselves without the need for an external terminator plug.
Also, check that the SCSI ID of the hard-drive is unique for that chain. As SCSI is a serial connection it needs each device to have a unique ID so that any signals along the SCSI path arrive at the correct device. No two devices on a SCSI chain can have the same ID. Your computer's own SCSI port has a SCSI ID which is usually '7' (SCSI ID = 7) but you will have to check that just in case. If there is only the hard-drive connected to your computer, you can just try changing the ID on the hard-drive, reconecting it and trying again.
Next, you may need to poll the SCSI devices. This is where your computer sends a "Are you there?" signal to all devices on the SCSI port and waits to see which of them reply. Without knowing what your computer is and what software you're using it'd be impossible to give advice on how to do that.
