Royal Doulton announces the international launch of the 100 Years of Royal Albert collection, celebrating a century of English craftsmanship through ten patterns representing design trends of each decade of the 20th century. Royal Albert's success dates back to the late 1800's, and the new collection celebrates the brand's vitality, longevity and rich design history. The collection features all bone china with 22 karat gold accents on teacups, saucers, plates, mugs, teapots, creamers, sugar bowls and figurines. Every pattern included in the collection captures the true historical design statements and trends of each time period.
As it embarks on a new century of fine china design, Royal Albert honors the artistic achievements of the one it has so faithfully chronicled with this stunning 100 Years of Royal Albert tribute collection. Employing classic shapes and delicate floral motifs, the 10-part series, which includes teaware, figurines, and brooches, recalls major British historical events and style trends from each decade of the 21st century. Inspiration for the series came from previous Royal Albert designs and its archive pattern books. This 10-piece teacup and saucer set includes the patterns from 1900 to 1940. Crafted of bone china with lustrous 22-karat gold trim, the five pairs all share the same shape for a highly coordinated look at the table while showcasing the special beauty of each decade's design. For instance, set the dark, ornate 1910 Duchess next to the simple, fresh 1930 Polka Rose for an unexpected combination that delights the senses. Royal Albert's signature roses provide a common theme that ties the styles together. Each piece has a commemorative backstamp, and the set comes packaged in a presentation-style pink and burgundy hatbox with illustrations of all the patterns. The china is dishwasher-safe and carries a two-year warranty. --Kara Karll

HBO's pioneering series takes the dark carnival gambit of Ray Bradbury's Something Wicked This Way Comes, drops it in the bleak heartland of Dust Bowl-era America and jolts it with a compelling undercurrent of Biblical apocalypse. That's no easy dramatic flux to musically evoke, but veteran TV composer Jeff Beal graces the show with cues that seamlessly fuse Appalachian folk traditions with a brooding, goth-inspired ambient gloom. The anxious solo fiddle of the show's theme is a repeating motif, one the composer uses to variously evoke melancholy ("Dora Mae's Funeral"), bittersweet romance ("Rita Sue and Jonesy") or supernatural wonders ("Ben Heals the Girl"). Beal's use of mournful solo horn (as on "Mark of the Beast") often heralds the show's undercurrent of Biblical doom, while his hesitant, haunting piano passages seem to hang in the air for eternity. The evocative cues here stand in stark contrast to the oft-quirky jazz cool of the composer's Emmy-winning work on Monk, ample tribute to Beal's masterful abilities to channel his musical instincts into even the most diverse dramatic material. --Jerry McCulley

This remarkable music documentary takes us deep into Russian opera, a vast, rich, and (for Western audiences) largely unexplored territory. It gives many great moments from works that have entered the Western repertoire (Boris Godunov, Eugene Onegin, and The Queen of Spades), but its primary attraction for many will be its tantalizing glimpses of some unfamiliar works and extraordinary singers little-known in the West. There are many performances of intense power and beauty. Three basses, Ivan Petrov, Alexander Ognigvstev, and Alexander Pirogov, sing excerpts from Boris Godunov with excellent work by Andrei Sokolov as Shuisky and Ivan Kozlovsky as the Simpleton. Two tenors, Ivan Kozlovsky and Sergei Lemishev, sing Lensky's aria from Eugene Onegin; a young Galina Vishnevskaya is splendid as Lisa in The Queen of Spades. Among the less familiar operas sampled are Glinka's A Life for the Tsar and Ruslan and Ludmila, Djargomizhsky's Rusalka, and Tchaikovsky's Vakula and Mazeppa. --Joe McLellan

FAERIE TALE THEATRE:COMPLETE COLLECTO - DVD Movie
One of the first gems of the cable TV age, Faerie Tale Theatre brings 26 classic tales to life. Produced over a five-year span (1982-87) for Showtime, FTT brought together creative dramatics and whimsical writing with some of the top talents of the day. Executive producer/host Shelley Duvall (who was coming off her breakout role in The Shining) shepherds this mix of theatrical simplicity and grand storytelling for these oft-told tales ("Goldilocks and the Three Bears," "Little Red Riding Hood," "Hansel and Gretel," "Sleeping Beauty," and the like) for kids and their parents. Since they are not elaborately produced, FTT may be a hard sell for some smaller members of the family at first, but most should be hooked, even older kids who may pooh-pooh fairy tales. There's always a slight twist that makes these productions fresh. The cast is amazing, especially when you think how lightly cable television was thought of in the '80s: Jeff Bridges, Bud Cort, Liza Minnelli, James Coburn, Susan Sarandon, Christopher Reeve, Klaus Kinski, Billy Crystal, Matthew Broderick, Gregory Hines, Eric Idle, Robin Williams, and Mick Jagger are some of the talented--and varied--actors appearing. Crystal's take on the smart "Little Pig" (with Jeff Goldblum as the wolf) and Williams's "Frog Prince" are two comic gems. Malcolm McDowell, right in the middle of his career high-point of playing baddies, brings flair to the Big Bad Wolf, while his then-real-life wife Mary Steenburgen beautifully counterpoints as Red Riding Hood. The casting of Vincent Price and Vanessa Redgrave in "Snow White" is inspired. Also impressive are the directors Duvall pooled: Tim Burton ("Aladdin and His Wonderful Lamp"), Francis Ford Coppola ("Rip Van Winkle") Peter Medak (three episodes), Nicholas Meyer ("Pied Piper"), and Roger Vadim ("Beauty and the Beast"). You can go on for days about these wonderful tales, most totaling around the 45-minute mark, but it's better just to get the set and start wherever you'd like; you will get to the end sooner than you think. --Doug Thomas

Like other types of apparel and accessories from Lucky, Lucky Brand Women's Cowboy Boots actually go a step beyond what might normally be expected of a cowgirl boot. These are some of the most unique and stylish boots out there, just new to the "fashion world" last year (2009).
Since the release of the women's western boots from Lucky, the line has expanded a bit (and I expect it will increase more next year).
For those who are shopping for these fun and funky boots, here is a list of what you can find:
Lucky Brand Chantel - Here is a boot that is shorter than a "common" cowboy boot, it is an ankle style boot with a distinct western appeal. It is studded along parts of the boot to add a subtle touch of flair, and is available in a rather large selection of colors. Gorgeous style, and is one of the most popular boots from Lucky Brand - in any style.
Lucky Holly Boot - This boot has a taller style (coming up to just below the knee for most women) and is one of the most eye-catching styles I've ever seen in a cowgirl boot! It has colorful leather overlays that create a "patchy" look and is a very hot look - especially for those ladies who don't mind standing out in a crowd!
Camian Bootie from Lucky Brand - Here is an absolutely lovely bootie style of footwear, again with contrasting leather overlays to give it a layered look. This boot stands apart this year as perhaps having the strongest "western" look about it compared to the other two.
I am sure that as time goes on there will be more additions to the Lucky Brand Women's Cowboy Boot collection - the past year has proven that they are much loved, so I will look forward to what is coming next!

Victorian Jewelry & The Cultural Impacts
Queen Victoria ruled Britain for 64 years between 1837-1901. Most of this period saw prudery and a visible code of moral conduct. The change took place from a romantic society to the more puritanical Victorian society. The transition to prudery was felt more severely after Victoria’s marriage to Albert in 1840. A change to a livelier lifestyle took place in 1890 with the arrival on the scene of Prince Edward.
There was a sharp divide between the people from the towns and those from rural areas. The railroad brought about a huge change in the quality of life as a whole especially among the poorer people from the villages. A show of wealth, while wearing clothes of fashion, became the order of the day. Victorian jewelry became popular. Women started showing interest in wearing bracelets, rings, necklaces and watches with chains among other jewelry. These jewelry items were set with real or imitation jewels. Popular jewels were topaz, emerald, ruby and amethyst. In 1870 South Africa opened its diamond mines. This was an event of great import. Over night the accent of the stones in engagement rings, bracelets and necklaces shifted to diamonds, the girl’s best friend!
Today the online historical jewelry shops are stacked with Victorian jewelry items. The pieces are in vintage designs with settings of pearls, Swarovski crystal and jewelry in both gold and sterling silver. So the occasion could be holidays or proms and weddings or homecoming, itemized online catalogues will lay out the best of the choices for you. Victorian jewelry is available in earrings, bracelets, anklets, costume jewelry, lockets and accessories in the most intricate of designs. Typically you could pick up bracelets in sterling silver or 14k gold with white pearl and crystal design. Alternately, you could select a three-tier bracelet with large crystals in a choice of 10 colors. You could buy a flower design with six petals in 8 colors or a bracelet in a sparkling flower design in 9 colors. Similarly, in anklets you could go in for a medium fairy with a choice of 3 Victorian metals.

I need a model of a gothic looking limousine or armored car. 1940's or 50's type?
It's for a sci-fi conversion project (Genestealer Cult Limousine) and I'm trying to find something that has a huge Rolls-Royce length bonnet (hood) and is big enough to transport a gang.
So far the only suitable model I can find is a Russian BA-20 armored car: http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f317/clawador/My%20miniatures/18512_md-ArmoredCarCarsGenestealerC.jpg
I want something a bit more sleek - think "vampire-mobile".
Any suggestions? Maybe a vintage car enthusiast can name one.
