41 Original Hits From The Soundtrack Of American Graffiti List Price: $31.98 Sale Price: $23.32 |
|
For those of us who grew up in the '70s, this drive-in compilation of '50s and '60s rock and doo-wop, complete with Wolfman Jack introductions, was our introduction to this music. There are 41 jukebox hits here, and every one of them is a classic of its time (although two tracks--"At the Hop" and "She's so Fine" are covers by the revival band Flash Cadillac & the Continental Kids). In his 1973 movie, director George Lucas used the music (and the presence of mysterious deejay Wolfman) as the AM-radio soundtrack to one night in suburban California, 1962. The idea was to capture and sustain an end-of-summer, end-of-innocence mood that's in the air throughout the picture-- not as a shortcut to establishing a period (as in Robert Zemeckis'Forrest Gump). There's an awful lot of spontaneous energy in these tunes--from Chuck Berry and Buddy Holly, to the Platters and the Clovers and the Del-Vikings, to the Crests and the Beach Boys--and also just a hint of melancholy that goes down very nicely with a burger, shake, and fries. --Jim Emerson All products are BRAND NEW and factory sealed. A Rush of Blood to the Head List Price: $11.94 Sale Price: $4.50 |
|
Coldplay required a lifetime to make their wonderfully assured debut, Parachutes. But it took less than two years for the moody British quartet to deliver a masterful follow-up. As a band, Coldplay have advanced to a stage where they outshine nearly every one of their rivals in terms of imagination and emotional pull. A Rush of Blood to the Head is a soulful, exhilarating journey, moving from the cathartic rock of "Politik" to the hushed tones of "Green Eyes" without once breaking its mesmerizing spell. Singer Chris Martin takes his voice on soaring flights, reaching places only Jeff Buckley previously dared to go. And the music is nearly flawless, a persuasive cross between Pink Floyd and the Verve. Even if they haven't come up with another "Yellow," you would be hard-pressed to care. This is exquisite stuff. --Aidin Vaziri COLDPLAY A RUSH OF BLOOD TO THE HEAD |

Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (Walt Disney's Masterpiece) [VHS] List Price: $26.99 Sale Price: $2.74 |
|
Walt Disney's Classic Masterpiece movie. Comes in plastic protective case enjoyable entertainment for young and old. One of the brightest nuggets from Disney's golden age, this 1937 film is almost dizzying in its meticulous construction of an enchanted world, with scores of major and minor characters (including fauna and fowl), each with a distinct identity. When you watch Snow White's intricate, graceful movements of fingers, arms, and head all in one shot, it is not the technical brilliance of Disney's artists that leaps out at you, but the very spirit of her engaging, girl-woman character. When the wicked queen's poisoned apple turns from killer green to rose red, the effect of knowing something so beautiful can be so terrible is absolutely elemental, so pure it forces one to surrender to the horror of it. Based on the Grimm fairy tale, Snow White is probably the best family film ever to deal, in mythic terms, with the psychological foundation for growing up. It's a crowning achievement and should not be missed. --Tom Keogh Stills from Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (Click for larger image) One of the brightest nuggets from Disney's golden age, this 1937 film is almost dizzying in its meticulous construction of an enchanted world, with scores of major and minor characters (including fauna and fowl), each with a distinct identity. The high-tech artwork and graphics look great, the characters are strong, the familiar story is nicely augmented with an interesting villain (Jafar, voiced by Jonathan Freeman), and there's an incredible hook atop the whole thing: Robin Williams's frantically hilarious vocal performance as Aladdin's genie. Even if one isn't particularly moved by the love story between the title character (Scott Weinger) and his girlfriend Jasmine (Linda Larkin), you can easily get lost in Williams's improvisational energy and the equally entertaining performances of Freeman and Gilbert Gottfried (as Jafar's parrot). --Tom Keogh |

Star Wars Trilogy [VHS] List Price: $49.98 Sale Price: $11.93 |
|
The Star Wars trilogy had the rare distinction of becoming more than just a series of movies, but a cultural phenomenon, a life-defining event for its generation. On its surface, George Lucas's original 1977 film is a rollicking and humorous space fantasy that owes debts to more influences than one can count on two hands, but filmgoers became entranced by its basic struggle of good vs. evil "a long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away," its dazzling special effects, and a mythology of Jedi Knights, the Force, and droids. In the first film, Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) gets to live out every boy's dream: ditch the farm and rescue a princess (Carrie Fisher). Accompanied by the roguish Han Solo (Harrison Ford, the only principal who was able to cross over into stardom) and trained by Jedi master Obi-Wan Kenobi (Alec Guinness), Luke finds himself involved in a galactic war against the Empire and the menacing Darth Vader (David Prowse, voiced by James Earl Jones). The following film, The Empire Strikes Back (1980), takes a darker turn as the tiny rebellion faces an overwhelming onslaught. Directed by Irvin Kershner instead of Lucas, Empire is on the short list of Best Sequels Ever, marked by fantastic settings (the ice planet, the cloud city), the teachings of Yoda, a dash of grown-up romance, and a now-classic "revelation" ending. The final film of the trilogy, Return of the Jedi (1983, directed by Richard Marquand), is the most uneven. While the visual effects had taken quantum leaps over the years, resulting in thrilling speeder chases and space dogfights, the story is an uneasy mix of serious themes (Luke's maturation as a Jedi, the end of the Empire-rebellion showdown) and the cuddly teddy bears known as the Ewoks. Years later, George Lucas transformed his films into "special editions" by adding new scenes and special effects, which were greeted mostly by shrugs from fans. They were perfectly happy with the films they had grown up with (who cares if Greedo shot first?), and thus disappointed by Lucas's decision to make the special editions the only versions available. --David Horiuchi Star Wars Trilogy [VHS] |

A serendipitous meeting on the streets of Dublin between a down on his luck Irish street performer and a poor Czech immigrant sparks a bond that plays out in this hip modern day music film. ONCE follows the two as they write rehearse and record the songs that reveal their unique love story.System Requirements:Run time: 86 minutesFormat: DVD MOVIE Genre: DRAMA/LOVE & ROMANCE Rating: R UPC: 024543477594 Manufacturer No: 2247759 Winner of the World Audience Award at Sundance, Once starts out as a small-scale romance, like Before Sunrise, before arriving somewhere unexpected. An Irish busker (Glen Hansard, the Frames and The Commitments) meets a Czech flower seller (Markéta Irglová) while singing on the streets of Dublin. (In the credits, they're listed as Guy and Girl.) She likes what she hears and lets him know. Turns out she's a musician, too. They work on a few songs together and a friendship is forged. She lives with her widowed mother, who doesn't speak English. He lives with his widowed father, who owns a repair shop. Since he broke up with his girlfriend, the guy has been drifting, unable and unwilling to get his life in order. The girl encourages him to pursue a record deal, and the guy emerges from his funk. Then he makes a move on the girl, who rejects his advances. He's confused, but as he comes to find, there's a reason she's keeping her distance. Though Once is filled with appealing folk-pop by Hansard and Irglová (released on CD as The Swell Season), the movie isn't a traditional musical, but rather a more optimistic Brief Encounter. Filmmaker John Carney, Hansard's former bandmate, captures the real city--in all its affluence and poverty--rather than the picture postcard version. His beautifully shot film serves as a heartfelt ballad about all the underclass Guys and Girls swept aside amidst Ireland's economic miracle. --Kathleen C. The Prince of Egypt List Price: $9.99 Sale Price: $5.16 |
|
Nearly every biblical film is ambitious, creating pictures to go with some of the most famous and sacred stories in the Western world. DreamWorks' first animated film was the vision of executive producer Jeffrey Katzenberg after his ugly split from Disney, where he had been acknowledged as a key architect in that studio's rebirth (The Little Mermaid, etc.). His first film for the company he helped create was a huge, challenging project without a single toy or merchandising tie-in, the backbone du jour of family entertainment in the 1990s. Three directors and 16 writers succeed in carrying out much of Katzenberg's vision. The linear story of Moses is crisply told, and the look of the film is stunning; indeed, no animated film has looked so ready to be placed in the Louvre since Fantasia. Here is an Egypt alive with energetic bustle and pristine buildings. Born a slave and set adrift in the river, Moses (voiced by Val Kilmer) is raised as the son of Pharaoh Seti (Patrick Stewart) and is a fitting rival for his stepbrother Rameses (Ralph Fiennes). When he learns of his roots--in a knockout sequence in which hieroglyphics come alive--he flees to the desert, where he finds his roots and heeds God's calling to free the slaves from Egypt. Katzenberg and his artists are careful to tread lightly on religious boundaries. The film stops at the parting of the Red Sea, only showing the Ten Commandments--without commentary--as the film's coda. Music is a big part (there were three CDs released) and Hans Zimmer's score and Stephen Schwartz's songs work well--in fact the pop-ready, Oscar-winning "When You Believe" is one of the weakest songs. Kids ages 5 and up should be able to handle the referenced violence; the film doesn't shy away from what Egyptians did to their slaves. Perhaps Katzenberg could have aimed lower and made a more successful animated film, but then again, what's a heaven for? --Doug Thomas Features include: •MPAA Rating: PG•Format: DVD•Runtime: 74 minutes |

What to Expect When You're Expecting, 4th Edition List Price: $14.95 Sale Price: $7.77 |
|
One of USA Today’s most influential books of the past 25 years, What to Expect When You’re Expecting from Heidi Murkoff and Sharon Mazel has become one of the iconic guides to pregnancy. Covering everything from the physical and emotional to the nutritional and financial aspects of pregnancy, it’s loaded with all of the essentials and then some. In this new edition, each section has been rewritten and updated for the modern times, including a section of a vegan pregnancy. Announcing a brand new, cover-to-cover revision of America's pregnancy bible. What to Expect When You're Expecting is a perennial New York Times bestseller and one of USA Today's 25 most influential books of the past 25 years. It's read by more than 90% of pregnant women who read a pregnancy book--the most iconic, must-have book for parents-to-be, with over 14.5 million copies in print. Now comes the Fourth Edition, a new book for a new generation of expectant moms--featuring a new look, a fresh perspective, and a friendlier-than-ever voice. It's filled with the most up-to-date information reflecting not only what's new in pregnancy, but what's relevant to pregnant women. Heidi Murkoff has rewritten every section of the book, answering dozens of new questions and including loads of new asked-for material, such as a detailed week-by-week fetal development section in each of the monthly chapters, an expanded chapter on pre-conception, and a brand new one on carrying multiples. More comprehensive, reassuring, and empathetic than ever, the Fourth Edition incorporates the most recent developments in obstetrics and addresses the most current lifestyle trends (from tattooing and belly piercing to Botox and aromatherapy). There's more than ever on pregnancy matters practical (including an expanded section on workplace concerns), physical (with more symptoms, more solutions), emotional (more advice on riding the mood roller coaster), nutritional (from low-carb to vegan, from junk foodâdependent to caffeine-addicted), and sexual (what's hot and what's not in pregnant lovemaking), as well as much more support for that very important partner in parenting, the dad-to-be. Overflowing with tips, helpful hints, and humor (a pregnant woman's best friend), this new edition is more accessible and easier to use than ever before. It's everything parents-to-be have come to expect from What to Expect... only better. Amazon.com Exclusive An Essay from Heidi Murkoff What to Expect started with information--or, actually, lack of information. In fact, when I found out I was expecting for the first time--I didn't have the slightest idea of what to expect. And back then, it wasn't as easy to find out what to expect as you'd think. I created What to Expect When You're Expecting because I couldn't find the answers to my questions or the reassurance for my worries that I was searching for in the pregnancy books I read (and believe me, I read plenty). I was a mom on a mission--a mission to help other moms and dads worry less and enjoy their pregnancies (and their babies, and their toddlers) more. And I've been on that mission ever since. So what sent me back to recreate What to Expect--for a fourth time? Today, there's definitely no lack of information on pregnancy. In fact there's more information than ever before (a quick online search of pregnancy or a glance at pages and pages of pregnancy and parenting options right here on Amazon will clue you in on that). But often what's still hard to find is the right kind of information. Information that's accurate yet empathetic, reassuring yet realistic--that empowers you, but doesn't overwhelm or confuse you, that guides you but doesn't dictate to you. And it's not just about the right information, it's about information that's presented in the way that's most helpful--easy to access, easy to digest, easy to use. It's about information that makes your pregnant life less stressful--more enjoyable, and, well, easier. The fourth edition is a new What To Expect for a new generation of readers--you!--and I'm excited to say it's the best What To Expect yet. It's packed with all new information, of course (since things tend to change quickly in the baby-making and baby-delivering business--something you're probably all too aware of already if you've made more than one trip to the birthing room). But it doesn't only take into account what's new in obstetrics and what's new in pregnancy; it takes into account what's relevant to pregnant women now. Lifestyle. Working. Eating on the run. Juggling the pregnant life with real life. Keeping up with relationships. Birthing options that are family friendly and pregnancy care that incorporates the best that complimentary and alternative medicine has to offer. Managing multiples (which more and more moms are carrying). Sorting out the information from the misinformation--the reality from the hype, fact from Internet legend. The fourth edition also takes into account how you likely use books these days, so the format is even more accessible than ever. More geared to in-the-moment, find-it-in-a-flash reading. Most important of all, the fourth edition celebrates pregnancy. I have a passion for pregnancy, and always have. I love moms, I love dads, and I love babies. But everything about this fourth edition from the happy, excited mom-to-be on the cover, proudly caressing her beautiful belly and its even more beautiful contents, to the adorable week-by-week description of the making of your baby, to the positive (yet realistic), mom-to-mom tone throughout--this fourth edition is not just an explanation of those 9 amazing (though often bewildering) months you have ahead of you. It's a celebration of them. What to Expect When You're Expecting fourth edition is everything moms and dads have come to expect from What to Expect... only better. And I can't wait to start sharing it with you. I guess you can say--I'm a proud mama all over again. --Heidi Murkoff More to Explore What to Expect: Eating Well When You're Expecting What to Expect the First Year The What to Expect Pregnancy Journal & Organizer |

The Windows Recycle Bin is where your files go to die. If you inadvertently delete a file, you can easily restore it from the Recycle Bin. However, a poorly configured recycle bin can slow down your system performance.
When you delete a file, it is moved to the Recycle Bin. If the Recycle Bin is mis-configured, it will take upwards of a minute to delete a file. This generally happens on if you have a large disk and the Recycle Bin is using the default settings.
The default settings for the Recycle Bin reserves 10 percent of your disk space for deleted files. When Windows XP first was released typical disk sizes were under 30GB. Ten percent of this is 300MB, a size big enough to hold most deleted files. Now, with disk sizes approaching a terabyte, you could end up having a 100GB Recycle Bin space. This is a problem because as the Recycle Bin approaches full, Windows has to start getting rid of older files. The algorithm they use to do this is not very efficient and it can take minutes to delete a single file.
You can adjust the default Recycle Bin size and improve the performance of file deletes by doing the following steps:
- Right click on the Recycle Bin and choose Properties
- On the Recycle Bin properties, move the Recycle Bin size slider from 10 percent to 3 or even 1 percent.
- Click OK
Remember, this is still a decent amount of storage since you now have a larger disk to work with.
Empty your current Recycle Bin and you should now see your file delete time improve.

Environment Friendly DVD Cases: The Greening of Music and Film
Although many people obtain their favorite music and movies electronically through online music stores and channels, DVDs are still enjoying brisk sales. But in case you're worried about what happens to old DVD cases or are concerned about what the manufacturing process does to the environment, you'll be glad to know that now, environment friendly DVD cases are available. They're as good as the older versions but are considered a better alternative because they do not require additional resources to produce. In short, they are a sound solution to the problem of waste that results from the manufacture and use of most consumer products.
The problem with DVDs
Older DVD cases are made from synthetic materials, primarily plastics. Unfortunately, majority of plastics are derived from fossil fuels including coal, natural gas and oil. Environmentalists frown on this because of the demands it imposes on the earth's resources. Although one DVD casing may not amount to a lot of plastic, imagine having millions of them produced each year. Sadly, many of these get discarded and thrown in the trash, ending up in landfills and potentially causing pollution and buildup. As is common with most fuel-based materials, plastic DVD cases also do not break down.
Environment friendly DVD cases, on the other hand, use renewable and biodegradable materials. Lately, major music and film producers have supported the use of recycled DVD cases for their products. Sleeves are usually made from cardboard, a paper-based material that is sturdy enough to hold its shape and protect the disc. Cardboard is environment friendly because it can be recycled and it will decompose in a landfill. The advantage to this type of packaging is obvious -- not only does it provide a green solution to the problem of waste and pollution, it also helps minimize bulk in terms of storage.
Environment friendly DVD cases also reduce the total amount of shipment. Because they're made from materials such as paper and are considerably lighter, they can also result to reduced costs, which is a boon to end users.
How environment friendly is your DVD case?
It's good to note that this type of packaging varies in its component. Some cases are made of only 20% recycled material while others are 100% recycled. When checking out environment friendly products such as DVD cases, you might want to consider the percentage of recycled material used to keep informed.
Environment friendly DVD cases are relatively new, however, which explains why it is still limited to a few manufacturers and distributors. However, the demand for such products is expected to rise, thanks to its increasing popularity with manufacturers and consumers alike. As the drive toward a greener alternative to the most common consumer products intensifies, ther e might even come a time when every DVD case you'll ever buy will be 100% recycled.

Can DVD and CD boxes be made from recycled plastic?
And if so, would you encourage your favorite studios and producers to use them? Would you go so far as to boycott ones that did not?
Nickel, why are the crystal clear "jewel boxes" so important to CDs? Why can't they be solid with the paper label on the outside, like DVD boxes? Seems like some are even made of cardboard, which could be made from recycled paper.
Of course, they can be made and are made. Sometimes, difficult to detect, though.
