Sublime List Price: $10.99 Sale Price: $6.70 |
|
For all his tattoos and bulked-up frat-boy persona, singer Bradley Nowell had real soul, which made his fatal heroin overdose even more tragic. There's more to this Long Beach, California, trio's debut, released shortly after Nowell's death in 1996, than white suburban punks imitating Jamaican ska music. The band comes up with great songs, notably the catchy MTV hit "What I Got"; spooky dub-reggae undertones, produced by the Butthole Surfers' Paul Leary, to go with the snappy horns; and surprisingly progressive lyrics that attack sexism and other social ills, especially on "Wrong Way." Like the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Fishbone, obvious forebears, Sublime become slightly tiresome after 17 songs, but the band is great in short doses. --Steve Knopper No Description AvailableNo Track Information AvailableMedia Type: CDArtist: SUBLIMETitle: SUBLIMEStreet Release Date: 07/30/1996 |

Planet of the Apes 40th Anniversary Collection (Planet of the Apes / Beneath the Planet of the Apes / Escape From / Conquest of / Battle for) [Blu-ray] List Price: $79.99 Sale Price: $119.99 |
|
Planet of the ApesBilled as a "reimagining" of the original 1968 film, Tim Burton's extraordinary Planet of the Apes constantly borders on greatness, adhering to the spirit of Pierre Boulle's original novel while exploring fresh and inventive ideas and paying honorable tribute to the '68 sci-fi classic. Burton's gifts for eccentric inspiration and visual ingenuity make this a movie that's as entertaining as it is provocative, beginning with Rick Baker's best-ever ape makeup (hand that man an Oscar®!), and continuing through the surprisingly nuanced performances and breathtaking production design. Add to all this an intelligent screenplay that turns Boulle's speculative reversal--the dominance of apes over humans--into a provocative study of civil rights and civil war. The film finally goes too far with a woefully misguided ending that pays weak homage to the original, but everything preceding that misfire is astonishingly right. While attempting the space-pod retrieval of a chimpanzee test pilot, Major Leo Davidson (Mark Wahlberg) enters a magnetic storm that propels him into the distant future, where he crash-lands on the ape-ruled planet. Among the primitively civilized apes, treatment of enslaved humans is a divisive issue: senator's daughter Ari (Helena Bonham Carter) advocates equality while the ruthless General Thade (Tim Roth) promotes extermination. While Davidson ignites a human rebellion, this conflict is explored with admirable depth and emotion, and sharp dialogue allows Burton's exceptional cast to bring remarkable expressiveness to their embattled ape characters, most notably in the comic relief of orangutan slave trader Limbo (played to perfection by Paul Giamatti). Classic lines from the original film are cleverly reversed (including an unbilled cameo for Charlton Heston, in ape regalia as Thade's dying father), and while this tale of interspecies warfare leads to an ironic conclusion that's not altogether satisfying, it still bears the ripe fruit of a timeless what-if idea. --Jeff Shannon Beneath the Planet of the ApesThe second--and most horrifying--of the five Planet of the Apes movies, this film goes where few end-of-the-world movies ever dare tread. It's the far future. The mass of humanity has descended into speechless savagery, kept as captive animals by the talking apes who have inherited the world. Two astronauts from our time have landed here, retracing the path of their lost comrade, Captain Taylor (Charlton Heston). Unfortunately, they've landed in the middle of a grim situation. Warlike gorillas are preparing to eliminate the last shards of shattered human civilization, a degenerate, subterranean cult worshipping the greatest of all human achievements--the cobalt bomb. As well as rescuing Taylor, the two men have to stop the gorillas from wiping out humanity ... and stop humanity from fulfilling their self-appointed, self-destructive destiny. This is both thrill-a-minute science fiction and a surprisingly deep reflection on the human condition. Plus, it's got lots of guys in really keen ape suits. --Grant Balfour Genre: Sci-Fi/FantasyRating: NRRelease Date: 4-NOV-2008Media Type: Blu-Ray |

Beauty and the Beast (A Walt Disney Classic) [VHS] List Price: $2.00 Sale Price: $4.64 |
|
A Walt Disney Classic movie, Beauty and the Beast is a childs redention of the classic story. comes in a plastic protective case and VHS tape plays good. The film that officially signaled Disney's animation renaissance (following The Little Mermaid) and the only animated feature to receive a Best Picture Oscar nomination, Beauty and the Beast remains the yardstick by which all other animated films should be measured. It relates the story of Belle, a bookworm with a dotty inventor for a father; when he inadvertently offends the Beast (a prince whose heart is too hard to love anyone besides himself), Belle boldly takes her father's place, imprisoned in the Beast's gloomy mansion. Naturally, Belle teaches the Beast to love. What makes this such a dazzler, besides the amazingly accomplished animation and the winning coterie of supporting characters (the Beast's mansion is overrun by quipping, dancing household items) is the array of beautiful and hilarious songs by composer Alan Menken and the late, lamented lyricist Howard Ashman. (The title song won the 1991 Best Song Oscar, and Menken's score scored a trophy as well.) The downright funniest song is "Gaston," a lout's paean to himself (including the immortal line, "I use antlers in all of my de-co-ra-ting"). "Be Our Guest" is transformed into an inspired Busby Berkeley homage. Since Ashman's passing, animated musicals haven't quite reached the same exhilarating level of wit, sophistication, and pure joy. --David Kronke --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title. |

Fantasia (Walt Disney's Masterpiece) [VHS] List Price: $24.99 Sale Price: $2.88 |
|
WALT DISNEY'S MASTERPIECE Along with Fantasia and Fantasia 2000, the anthology set contains a third disc that examines a segment of both movies in detail. Each segment has an introduction that has experts (including Leonard Maltin), producer Roy E. Disney, or the animators setting up the piece's history. Notes on the music and dozens of design photos are included on all the segments, although others offer more intriguing features. Abandoned animation is shown on many segments, as are a few behind-the-scenes shorts; the most intriguing are experts from Walt Disney's hosted documentaries on how his company made movies. As for the photos, they are awkwardly catalogued and only the most patient of viewers would want to look at all of them. In some segments, though, these images are entertainingly produced as a "story reel," presenting these images--rough animation, sketches, pastel paintings--with the musical accompaniment. For those looking for a more well-rounded view of the films, the two one-hour documentaries on each film's disc lay the groundwork, but none of the anthology looks at how the first film was seen through the years or gives time to anyone who wasn't gung-ho about every element of the films. There is hardly a mention of embarrassing stereotypes that were matted (and still are) out of the "Pastoral" segment, or the intriguing aspect of the film as a '60s icon for the ultimate head-trip. Disney does let their guard down to show sequences that were being readied in 1940 for future editions (including a recently restored short scored to "Clair de Lune"). Most tantalizing is a look at how the special effects were done in the original film. The guide is a scrapbook that one of the technicians kept and was discovered only in 1990. Fans can only hope a reproduction will be made available someday. --Doug Thomas |

The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (Two-Disc Widescreen Theatrical Edition) List Price: $5.97 Sale Price: $2.48 |
|
The final battle for Middle-earth begins. Frodo and Sam led by Gollum continue their dangerous mission toward the fires of Mount Doom in order to destroy the One Ring. Aragorn struggles to fulfill his legacy as he leads his outnumbered followers against the growing power of the Dark Lord Sauron so that the Ring-bearer may complete his quest.Running Time: 200 min.Format: DVD MOVIE Genre: ACTION/ADVENTURE UPC: 794043692925 Manufacturer No: N6929 With The Return of the King, the greatest fantasy epic in film history draws to a grand and glorious conclusion. Director Peter Jackson's awe-inspiring adaptation of the Tolkien classic The Lord of the Rings could never fully satisfy those who remain exclusively loyal to Tolkien's expansive literature, but as a showcase for physical and technical craftsmanship it is unsurpassed in pure scale and ambition, setting milestone after cinematic milestone as the brave yet charmingly innocent Hobbit Frodo (Elijah Wood) continues his mission to Mordor, where he is destined to destroy the soul-corrupting One Ring of Power in the molten lava of Mount Doom. While the heir to the kingdom of Men, Aragorn (Viggo Mortensen), endures the massive battle at Minas Tirith with the allegiance of the elf Legolas (Orlando Bloom), dwarf Gimli (John Rhys-Davies) and the great wizard Gandalf (Ian McKellen), Frodo and stalwart companion Samwise Gamgee (Sean Astin) must survive the schizoid deceptions of Gollum, who remains utterly convincing as a hybrid of performance (by Andy Serkis) and subtly nuanced computer animation. Jackson and cowriters Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens have much ground to cover; that they do so with intense pacing and epic sweep is impressive enough, but by investing greater depth and consequence in the actions of fellow Hobbits Merry (Dominic Monaghan) and Pippin (Billy Boyd), they ensure that Return of the King maintains the trilogy's emphasis on intimate fellowship. While several major characters appear only briefly, and one (Christopher Lee's evil wizard, Saruman) relegated entirely to the extended version on DVD, Jackson is to be commended for his editorial acumen; like Legolas the archer, his aim as a filmmaker is consistently true, and he remains faithful to Tolkien's overall vision. If Return suffers from too many endings, as some critic suggested, it's only because the epic's conclusion is so loyally inclusive of the actors--most notably Astin--who gave it such strength to begin with. By ending the LOTR trilogy with noble integrity and faith in the power of imaginative storytelling, The Return of the King, like its predecessors, will stand as an adventure for the ages. --Jeff Shannon |

Clue: The Movie List Price: $8.99 Sale Price: $3.13 |
|
Undoubtedly the first movie in history to have played in theaters with three different endings (depending on which theater you attended), Clue is a silly whodunit based on the familiar board game featuring Colonel Mustard, Mrs. Peacock, and all the other usual suspects. A broadly comic cast play the sundry suspects gathered in a mansion to solve a murder, knowing that one of their numbers is the culprit. Michael McKean, Eileen Brennan, and Tim Curry are the best of the bunch, and the film is as lightweight an experience as a round of the game itself. Directed by Jonathan Lynn (My Cousin Vinny). The video release contains all three endings. --Tom Keogh The favorite mystery game comes to the screen in a hilarious whodunit that challenges you to guess who killed Mr. Boddy. Was it Eileen Brennan, Tim Curry, Madeline Kahn, Christopher Lloyd, Michael McKean, Martin Mull, or Lesley Ann Warren? 96 min. Widescreen (Enhanced); Soundtracks: English Dolby Digital mono, French Dolby Digital mono; Subtitles: English; alternate endings; theatrical trailer. |

X-Men Origins: Wolverine (Single-Disc Edition) List Price: $19.98 Sale Price: $6.42 |
|
Wolverine, fan favorite of the X-Men universe in both comic books and film, gets his own movie vehicle with X-Men Origins: Wolverine, a tale that reaches way, way back into the hairy mutant's story. Somewhere in the wilds of northwest Canada in the early 1800s, two boys grow up amid violence: half-brothers with very special powers. Eventually they will become the near-indestructible warriors (and victims of a super-secret government program) known as Wolverine and Sabretooth, played respectively by Hugh Jackman (returning to his role) and Liev Schreiber (new to the scene). It helps enormously to have Schreiber, an actor of brawny skills, as the showiest villain; the guy can put genuine menace into a vocal inflection or a shift of the eyes. Danny Huston is the sinister government operative whose experiments keep pullin' Wolverine back in, Lynn Collins is the woman who shares a peaceful Canadian co-existence with our hero when he tries to drop out of the program, and Ryan Reynolds adds needed humor, at least for a while. The fast-paced early reels give an entertaining kick-off to the Wolverine saga, only to slow down when a proper plot must be put together--but isn't that perpetually the problem with origin stories? And despite a cool setting, the grand finale is a little hemmed in by certain plot essentials that must be in place for the sequels, which may be why characters do nonsensical things. So, this one is fun while it lasts, if you're not looking for a masterpiece, or an explanation for Wolverine's facial grooming. --Robert Horton Stills from X-Men Origins: Wolverine (Click for larger image) Heroic Hugh Jackman “breathes the fire into Wolverine” (Miami Herald) — with a vengeance! This pulse-pounding action thriller sinks razor-sharp adamantium claws into the mysterious origins of Logan/Wolverine: his epically violent and romantic past, his complex relationship with Victor Creed/Sabretooth (Liev Schreiber), and the ominous Weapon X program that unleashes his primal fury. Along the way, Wolverine also encounters legendary new mutants, including Deadpool (Ryan Reynolds) and Gambit (Taylor Kitsch). You’ll go “berserker” for this deeper, darker, more-spectacular-than-ever chapter of the X-Men saga!Product Measures: 0.5 x 5.5 x 7.5 |
Get yourself Introduced With Poker Game
Out of all the famous table games, poker games now top lists the rank with its increasing demand among the avid players. This game is much famous at casino houses but now with the sizzling demand even home places are becoming preferred junction for abetting the intense fever of poker game among the players. You may have variation too regarding the rules at both places, however rules adopted by casinos are the basics everywhere and is followed in home with slight variation. Poker game is played uniformly in all casinos and a deck is 52-card is used to perform various form of this game.
Since, poker games are played in different ways; there are also different rules for the different game played in it. For example when it is a draw games a joker is included there but it can not be included when it is to play flop games like Texas Holdem, Stud game etc.
The ranking of cards normally starts with the ace and ranking descend with ace, king, queen, jack, 10 and so on. Often the card ranking keeps the king at top and the ace the put at the lowest below the card having number 2 but it can be found rare in common poker games.
The number of cards distributed to each player also depends upon the form of poker game and it can vary considerably with your game-form choice. Below is the list of some of most common poker games that can help you differentiate them with the brief introduction given here.
Texas Holde’m: This is one of the most famous forms of poker game and often is know as just Holdem. This game is basically a community card game in which 5 cards are commonly shared by players and they have freedom to make any desired hand matching the shared cards with that of two available to them. For betting there can be any thing like limit, no limit, and pot limit.
Omaha Holde’m: Much similar to Texas Holde’m but here players have four personal cards and five community cards to be shared by every one. This game can have also the option of limit, pot limit or often no limit and is played high only.
Stud: Though, there can be much variation for Stud but still the seven card form is most common. This form is most common in casino while in tournament the seven card stud high-low is more famous. At home places the forms people usually opt for this game are anaconda, Chicago, and a lot more. This game has also a 5- card form but is rarely found in casinos, as it requires somewhat better skill that normally becomes tedious for new comers or even the old players. ‘Sonora’ one of its type and normally played with no limit is common with some of avid kind of players of this game.
Draw Poker: One of the commonest of all poker games. This game has 5 card-drawn option and is normally requires high-standard of skill for its high level basics. So normally the new comer hardly finds smooth run in this game that is whey they normally do not choose in the beginning. However, this game is now rare in casinos.
Low ball: Unlike other form in low ball the lowest hand wins the game. The ace has the lowest rank in this game so the best hand combination will be (5, 4, 3, 2, A). This game too has many variations. One of its famous form 2-7 or deuce to seven draw the flushed and straights too are counted and ace ranks top. Now the best hand possible here can obviously be (75432). This game generally played with no limit bet and now it is rare in the casinos. But whenever it is played there it is played with triple drew option instead of single draw at the previous.
Razz: Razz is a type of stud lowball having seven card options. It is normally played with 8 to 10 players on a professional table. This form is much common to tournaments and is rarely played in casual games.
