Decorate Cinderella's castle, filling it with furnishings, pictures, and even food before bringing in the world's most downtrodden stepdaughter and her friends. With this game, Cinderella fans ages 5 and older can design their heroine's living spaces, print out especially well-decorated rooms, and experiment with a new variation on the age-old pastime of playing with dolls. Disney's Cinderella Dollhouse is really a basic paint program posing as a watered-down version of The Sims. Players decorate Cinderella's kitchen, bedroom, and ballroom, but instead of adorning each empty space with flat images, girls choose from a gallery of interactive objects. What does this mean? Put a flute in Cinderella's hand and she will actually play it; give her a tray of cupcakes and she will offer them to everyone in the room. Adding different characters to the mix will change what they do and say. Girls can thus create scenes where the wicked stepsisters argue, or--by swapping the cast around--they can induce the Prince to make a declaration of love to Cinderella. The number of possible combinations is respectably large, and Disney provides a monthly download of additional objects to keep gameplay from getting stale. Unfortunately, this game is something of a one-trick pony. Unlike an adult-oriented simulator, the characters' prerecorded responses to game objects are controlled by very simple rules. There are no deviations from the basic Cinderella script, girls cannot create their own characters, and ultimately, the animations don't disguise the fact that this is just another clip art gallery with new bells and whistles. Even with the game updates, older girls will outgrow the dollhouse swiftly. What's more, occasional sound glitches and a long introduction sequence--which can't be skipped--make the process of getting started tedious. That said, the game does have appealing graphics and expands nicely on the concept of an electronic sticker book--an activity that is usually tossed into other games as a poorly executed afterthought. For younger girls who are fond of this particular fairy tale, or who have already shown that they enjoy decoration-themed programs, Disney's Cinderella Dollhouse makes a good selection. --Alyx Dellamonica

In spring 2010 multi-instrumentalist Dave Depper hit a wall. He'drecorded and toured the world with internationally-renowned artists (JolieHolland, Mirah, the Decemberists) as well as beloved Portlandinstitutions (Loch Lomond, Norfolk & Western, Musee Mecanique,Blue Giant), but to date had yet to record any music of his own. Remember the outfit Cher wore to the Oscars when she won an Academy Award for her performance in this 1987 film? Ay-yi-yi. The actress' more retiring character in this infectious comedy leaps several psychological hurdles just giving her hair a permanent. But then the original screenplay by John Patrick Shanley (Joe Versus the Volcano) is a wonderful, gently satirical tale of an Italian-American family dealing with repression and dissatisfaction against a backdrop of cultural expectations. Cher is focused and funny as a widow who feels she should marry an older fellow (Danny Aiello), but then falls for his black-sheep brother (Nicolas Cage). Olympia Dukakis and Vincent Gardenia are perfect as her parents, and John Mahoney (of TV's Frasier) has a memorable, small role as a middle-aged man on the make who gets a lecture from Dukakis's character. Shanley's dialogue is comically stylized in a way that makes one appreciate how much words can inform an actor's performance. Taking its cues from him and director Norman Jewison (And Justice for All), the cast immerse themselves in a pool of hilariously operatic emotion. --Tom Keogh

He-Man and the Masters of the Universe makes its debut on DVD in a robust collector's set, filled with extras any fan would enjoy. Part one of season one contains a whopping 33 episodes, following the hulky, well-tanned muscleman who masquerades as the irresponsible, goofy Prince Adam by day. The secret of He-Man's dual identity is only shared by The Sorceress (who's only powerful so long as she remains near Castle Greyskull, where she lives), Man-At-Arms (the king's gadget specialist) and Orko, a floating creature whose backwards magic spells often leave everyone with egg on their face (literally). He-Man's legacy was also its focus on family values, illustrated at the end of each episode through a moral lesson given by one of the characters. They range from the useful (Don't judge people by their looks) to the somewhat trite (When you're sad, sing a song). He-Man's nemesis, the wizard Skeletor, remains a fan favorite, accompanied by his motley crew of sidekicks: Beastman, Evil-Lyn, Merman, and Tri-Clops. There's even a little room for romance, though any flirtation between Adam/He-Man and the overeager captain of the guard, Teela, is usually restricted to jealous looks when the other receives the attentions of an outsider. Memorable episodes include "Teela's Quest," in which she discovers her real mother is The Sorceress; "A Friend in Need," a drugs allegory where an insecure (and very scantily-clad) woman becomes addicted to a potion that makes her confident; "Song of Celice," where a woman's powerful singing voice is exploited by Skeletor to conquer Greyskull; and "Prince Adam No More," in which Adam struggles with seeking approval from his father, King Randor. A new behind-the-scenes documentary reveals insight into the series's launch as the inaugural first-run syndicated cartoon; the creators's encounter with a fresh-off-Conan-the-Barbarian star Arnold Schwarzenegger at a convention ("He looked at our drawings … and was ticked off," recalls creator Lou Scheimer). There's also a featurette in which producers and animators discuss individual episodes, animated storyboards, and scripts.
