Phase Transformation and Mechanical Behavior in Annealed Duplex Stainless Steel Welds
The gas tungston arc welding (GTAW)is employed for welding of thin plates.In GTAW of standard 2205 duplex stainless steel ( DSS) plate of 5 mm thickness, which is having 22.37% Cr and 5.74% Ni is used in this study. Weld beads were produced with ER 2209 filler wire of higher alloy content (22% Cr and 9% Ni). The shielding gas Argon was employed in this work. The interpass temperatures were kept as 1100 C.
The phase transformations and mechanical behaviour during welding and subsequent.Annealing treatment of 2205 duplex stainless steel have been investigated. Detailed microstructural examination showed the presence of higher ferrite amounts in the heat affected zone (HAZ), while higher amounts of austenite were recorded in the centre region of the weld metal. Generaly Annealing treatments in the temperature range of 800–1000 °C resulted in a precipitation of ? phase and chromium carbides at the austenite and ferrite (?/?) interfaces that were found to be preferential precipitation sites.
To prevent this the process is carried out above 1050°C.Above 1050 °C, the volume fraction of ? ferrite increases with annealing temperature. The increase of ? ferrite occurs at a faster rate in the HAZ than in the base metal and fusion zone. Optimal mechanical properties and an acceptable ferrite/ austenite ratio throughout the weld regions corresponds to annealing at 1050 °C.
The main aim of this work is to investigate the defect in the weldment by the use of x-ray (NDT). The macro and microstructure examinations, as well as the evaluations of the mechanical properties such as impact and hardness were carried out. And also the pitting corrosion resistan
ces were evaluated. Results are discussed in detail.
