Between 1976 and 1994, Commodore had astounding success in the nascent personal computer business. Amid the chaos and infighting, Commodore was able to achieve some remarkable industry firsts. They were the first major company to show a personal computer, even before Apple and Radio Shack. They sold a million computers before anyone else. No single computer has sold more than the Commodore 64. The first true multimedia computer, the Amiga, came from Commodore. Yet with all these milestones, Commodore receives almost no credit as a pioneer. Commodore was one of the only companies with the ability to make silicon, and the results were obvious. They had more creativity, more color, and more character than the competition. While Apple and IBM charged exorbitant prices, Commodore was able to reach the masses with affordable computers while remaining profitable. The Commodore 64 cut a path of destruction through the early industry, knocking Tandy, Texas Instruments, Sinclair, and Atari out of the computer business and badly hurting Apple and even IBM. While other companies received more press, Commodore sold more computers. Yet Commodore never reached a comfortable position. They were always on the verge of blinding success or abysmal failure. Commodore’s volatile founder, Jack Tramiel, lived on the edge, and he made sure his employees lived there too. On the Edge: The Spectacular Rise and Fall of Commodore tells the story through over 44 hours of interviews with former engineers and managers: Chuck Peddle, the digital God who created a revolution with the 6502 chip and designed the PET computer. Al Charpentier, the chain smoking architect of Commodore’s revolutionary graphics chips. Bob Yannes, the frustrated musician and synthesizer aficionado who designed the Commodore 64 and the SID sound chip. Bil Herd, the unruly engineer who created the maligned Plus/4 and later sought redemption with the C128. The Amiga engineers, who created the first true multimedia system even before the word multimedia existed. Irving Gould, financier and majority shareholder who rescued Commodore in the sixties, then allowed it to wither.

Looking for high-flying action in the farthest reaches of space? Well look elsewhere because you won't find it in X: Beyond the Frontier. What you will find is an almost cerebral space-exploration simulation in which players must hone their financial talent as well as their dogfighting skills--all at a pace that makes turtles seem speedy. This is not to say that X is a bad game--far from it, in fact. The game is designed to be played in a freeform fashion, much like the Commodore 64/Apple IIE classic Elite and the Privateer series. Players begin the game in a strange new universe, marooned in space after a failed test flight of Earth's first hyperspace-capable spacecraft. Alone, defenseless, and broke, players must figure out how to make money and equip themselves to fight off pirates and a warlike alien race known as the Xenon, all while exploring their new galactic surroundings. The game gives a few gentle pushes and hints to get you going, but for the most part, players decide the flow of the game for themselves. X can be trying for newcomers, since it moves along at a very slow pace. Even simple travel from one space station to another is tedious and boring until you save enough cash to upgrade your ship with time acceleration capabilities. The charm of the game lies in this pace, however, since it breaks completely from the style of Freespace 2, the Wing Commander series, and the X-Wing games from LucasArts. And while you cannot dive headlong into a 30-ship dogfight in X, you can build a financial empire by purchasing space factories that supply income. With the money you make, you can transform your ship into a weapons-laden flying fortress. This becomes necessary as you stumble across the game's plot (there is a story--and plenty of combat--but you don't really come across it right away). The graphics are a mix of staggering beauty and amateurish 3-D design. While some effects--spinning planets, glowing engine coronas, slick space stations--are truly stunning, others are not so impressive. The simplistic ship designs are disappointing, for one thing, and so is the heavily seamed nebula background visible in most star systems. The game's biggest flaw, however, is its poor documentation, which does little to educate the player on the intricacies of the game. Instead, players must discover most of the game's most important aspects on their own (how to buy and manage a factory, for example). Still, X can be a very appealing game, especially for anyone looking for a break from the adrenaline-charged space shoot-'em-ups that pervade the gaming market. The game's open-ended design and unique space-entrepreneur features make X a compelling alternative to the typical space combat game. --Michael E. Ryan Pros: Open-ended game play Slick graphics Can purchase/run factories Cons: Open-ended game play Requires patience of a saint (especially at the beginning) Can only pilot one spacecraft Poor documentation

Southpeak Interactive's X: Beyond the Frontier combines 3-D environments, epic battles, diplomacy, construction, exploration, and trading into a gaming experience that will keep you intensely involved for hundreds of hours. You can follow the story line in an open or linear fashion. X: Beyond the Frontier allows you to operate 150 types of spacecraft and space stations as well as encounter up to 10,000 objects within the universe. In this game, you are the pilot of an experimental craft that accidentally drops you into an unknown sector of the universe. As you journey, you'll encounter different civilizations and experience their unique customs. But be aware: diplomacy is not always the answer. Cooperating with one race could easily make you the deadly enemy of another. Your mission is simple--stay alive.

Boarders away! The cutlass was the favorite weapon of both pirates and sailors during the Age of Sail. It was the perfect weapon in the close quarters action when boarding or defending a ship. Measuring 38" overall, this model features a 29 1/4" blade constructed from steel with an authentic aged finish and heavy blood groove. The black handle is accented with cast zinc guard and pommel, while the wooden scabbard features a cast metal throat with pirate emblem. This sword is a great addition to any collection!

Pirates Commodore

Another blockbuster book from James Clavell makes its debut on the home computer. This time it's Tai Pan and Ocean who are tempting you with an oriental adventure. The team behind the conversion have taken a very different approach to that used by Virgin about a year ago, when the book and TV series Shogun became a flip-screen arcade adventure.

Journeying back to the mid- nineteenth century you become Dirk Struan, a pirate and smuggler who's patch is the stormy China seas. Make that a penniless pirate and smuggler.

The ultimate goal of the game is to become Tai Pan, the supreme leader and Merchant Prince. Canton town is the starting point, and the first goal is to seek out a kindly soul who will lend you a few thousand. Once a loan has been secured, the handout enables a ship to be purchased, together with a crew, armaments and cargo which may ship to another town and sold, hopefully for a profit.

A hundred years ago there were no friendly government agencies to help the unemployed in China - the start loan comes with strings attached. Should you fail to make enough money to repay your benefactor within the allotted time, its game over as you lose your head! A successful first voyage should set you on the path to undreamed of riches. Providing thieves, pirates and unfriendly weather can be overcome.

LUCRATIVE

Several approaches may be taken by the would-be upwardly mobile hero. One ploy is to abide by the law at all times, and leave the press ganging and pirating to the scum. But then the occasional dabble in the naughty side of life, with a quick smuggle here and there, and does prove lucrative. Clearly, boarding and looting passing ships or blowing them out of the water, recruiting men against their will and dealing in contraband are the most attractive (and accurate) ways of making it to the top in the China Sea of the 19th century.

No matter what you're moral stances on matters piratical, the day-to-day problems of running a successful trading business still have to be attended to. Decisions abound: which ships to buy, how to man them, what cargo to carry, where to sell it and how best to get there are all questions that have to be answered.

INDOORS

While Dirk is on dry land the screen shows the streets and buildings can be entered and once inside cargo, passers by other traders and the law can be bought and sold. The odd useful item may be found lying around indoors.

At sea, in general voyaging mode, a bird's eye-view of the ship and surrounding area is presented on screen. The viewpoint changes when battle begins, depicting the enemy from a vantage point placed behind your cannon. Aiming the weapon, careful consideration needs to be given as to where to place shots if the booty contained in the hold of your target is to be salvaged. Successfully disabling another ship allows your crew to board it, and intimidate the other sailors. If you spare their worthless hides, they tend to join you handing over their current and future profits to your tender care.

Activities, including buying and selling when in port or reading the map and steering when at sea are controlled via a panel of icons ranged along the bottom of the screen.

Tai Pan is a decent game for commodore 64 and has a lot of game play that keeps players going for hours. My rating for this game is 3.8 out of 5. Check out more of my reviews.

About the Author

How do you feel about James Norrington (POTC)?

(He appeared in Pirates Of The Caribean 1,2, 3)
I didn't like the character at first and found him snobby and mean-spirited, but I have fallen in love with him because he is the only selfless character in the franchise and loved and did very much for Elizabeth, who never appreciated his efforts. He had some pretty tough times!

Do you believe the Commodore was a kind man? Also, do you think his death was unneccesary and would like to see him be brought back in the next movie?

His death was VERY unneccesary
