Tales of the Gold Monkey: The Complete Series List Price: $49.97 Sale Price: $24.48 |
|
This fondly remembered adventure series was set in 1938 on the fictional South Pacific island of Boragora, where freelance American pilot Jake Cutter (Stephen Collins) got in and out of one dangerous scrape after another with the help of his one-eyed dog Jack and a beat-up Grumman Goose seaplane. With Caitlin O'Heaney as espionage agent Sarah Stickney White, Jeff MacKay as boozy mechanic Corky, and Roddy McDowall as local bar owner Bon Chance Louie. Standard; Soundtrack: English Dolby Digital stereo; "making of" documentary; audio commentary; photo gallery; biographies; more. 20 episodes plus the feature-length pilot on 6 discs. 16 3/4 hrs. Stephen Collins heroically tries to keep up with the (Indiana) Joneses as rakishly charming soldier of misfortune Jake Cutter, who works as a pilot for hire on the South Pacific island of Boragora in 1938. Comparisons with Raiders of the Lost Ark are inevitable, but according to the series retrospective included as a bonus feature on this six-disc set, producer Don Bellisario (Quantum Leap, Magnum P.I., and NCIS) pitched this to the networks before Indy ever cracked his whip. It was only after Raiders became such a colossal hit that ABC saw gold in Monkey. Alas, this series never really took off, but nearly 30 years later, it's a grandly entertaining bit of escapist fare that packs old Hollywood Saturday matinee thrills and adventure into every episode. The colorful characters include Corky (Jeff Mackay), Jake's trusty (when he's not drunk) mechanic and sidekick; Bon Chance Louie (the peerless Roddy McDowall), the ethically questionable French liaison and governor, and owner of the disreputable hangout the Monkey Bar; and Sarah Stickney White (Caitlin O'Hearney), chanteuse and spy. Stealing nearly every scene he's in is Jack, Jake's one-eyed dog, always good for a comical cutaway. You can't beat the Nazis for villainy (check out John Hillerman's outrageous accent in the feature-length pilot episode), but Monkey steps over the PC line with deadly dragon lady Koji (Marta Du Bois) and her samurai henchman. These Tales are told mostly tongue-in-cheek. Expensive for its day, the series nevertheless has a B-movie look, which enhances its hokey charms. In addition to the newly filmed interviews with cast and creators, the bonus features include five immersive audio commentaries, as well as detailed character bios and a series "fact file." Virtually unseen since its original broadcast, Tales of the Gold Monkey is of more than nostalgic interest. Stephen Collins fans will surely be in--wait for it--7th Heaven. --Donald Liebenson |

Donovan's Reef List Price: $8.99 Sale Price: $3.00 |

John Wayne, Lee Marvin, and Jack Warden are former Navy men who live a leisurely life on an idyllic Pacific island where they had fought during World War II. But Wayne finds his boozing and brawling ways could be coming to an end when he falls for Warden's estranged daughter (Elizabeth Allen), who arrives on the island to determine if her father is worthy of collecting a sizable family inheritance. Cesar Romero and Dorothy Lamour co-star; directed by John Ford. 109 min. Widescreen (Enhanced); Soundtracks: English Dolby Digital mono, French Dolby Digital mono; Subtitles: English; theatrical trailer. John Wayne's last film with mentor and long-time collaborator John Ford (The Searchers) is a 1963 comedy about a group of war veterans settled on a South Pacific island. When the daughter of one of them (Jack Warden) comes for a visit, the freewheeling status quo between the boys is disrupted. This is Ford in his chummy, amiable, roughhousing mode--think of Victor McLaglen's drunken fight scene in Ford's She Wore a Yellow Ribbon--and it is entirely pleasurable. Wayne is comfortable in his man's-man role, and Lee Marvin (who played Wayne's nemesis in The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance) is effectively roguish. --Tom Keogh |

Wild Pacific [Blu-ray] List Price: $34.99 Sale Price: $24.47 |

How much do you know about the ocean that constitutes 25% of the world's water? This stunning Discovery Channel documentary series focused on the wonders and mysteries of the Pacific Ocean features gorgeous high-definition cinematography that captures the depth(s) and complexity of the Pacific, which sustains a magnificent variety of wildlife. 5 hrs. total on two discs. Widescreen; Soundtrack: English; behind-the-scenes footage. Following in the critically acclaimed footsteps of Blue Planet and Planet Earth, BBC Earth's Wild Pacific is a six-episode series narrated by Benedict Cumberbatch that explores the diverse ecosystems that comprise the globe's largest ocean. Only the flexible survive in the Pacific, as its vastness produces natural oddities found nowhere else. Coconut-crushing crabs, brilliantly adorned birds, and carnivorous caterpillars roam the specks of land peppering the deep blue landscape, while bizarre invertebrates escape the ocean's depths nightly to feed on the plankton-rich surface. Many of the Pacific's isolated human tribes still adhere to ancient traditions (including the world's first bungee-cord divers) that have remained unchanged for centuries. Ironically, the same isolation that harshly challenged Mother Nature to adapt or perish is now responsible for the region's present-day reputation as a lush tropical paradise. --David Callanan |

Fiji is a beautiful tropical paradise located in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. Because of its geography, this archipelago of over 300 islands has long been a crossroads for the meeting of many different island cultures, as well as a popular tourist destination. Fiji was part of an important trading route between various Pacific island cultures long before contact with Europeans. Over the centuries, a distinctly Fijian culture developed as a result of this rich mixture of cultures.
It is believed that the first settlers in Fiji came about 3,500 years ago from Southeast Asia, perhaps via Indonesia. Little is known of Fiji's early settlement, although archeological evidence shows that people had settled on the island somewhere between two and five thousand years ago. According to oral folklore, today's indigenous Fiji population was descended from Chief Lutunasobasoba, a Lapita chief and ancestor of modern-day Polynesians believed to have landed in Fiji. Some evidence suggests that the same Lapita group to settle in Fiji also came to Vanuatu, Samoa, Tonga, and other Pacific islands.
By the tenth century, the important Tu'i Tonga Empire in nearby Tonga brought Polynesian influences to Fiji, leaving an impact on the island's culture and language. Fijian culture was again impacted in the seventeenth century, when European explorers, missionaries, and whalers began to visit Fiji, although Europeans avoided the country for many years because the Tongans warned Europeans that Fiji was inhabited by dangerous cannibals. The first permanent European settlement on the archipelago is Levuka, founded in 1822. Soon after, Christian missionaries from Tahiti and Tonga began arriving in an attempt to convert the native Fijians to Christianity. The missionaries succeeded in converting several important Fijian chiefs.
During the nineteenth century, Fiji was the site of many battles between warring chiefs. This era was marked by several invasions and revolts. By the 1850s, Chief Cakobau had gained control of most of the islands. He had been converted to Christianity, and was largely influenced by connections with the western world. In 1858, he offered to cede the territory to the United Kingdom, in exchange for a payment of $40,000. However, the United Kingdom, realizing that Cakobau was not universally recognized as the King of Fiji, did not accept this proposal. In the 1970s, members of Cakobau's government again offered the territory to Britain, and in 1874 Fiji became a British colony.
During this time as a British colony, Fiji was subjected to many stresses. In 1875, an outbreak of measles left a third of the country dead. Between 1879 and 1916, over 60,000 indentured laborers would arrive from India to work in large sugar mills. During World War II, Fiji was turned into a training base for Allied soldiers. Thousands of Fijians fought in the Solomon Islands during the war, where they became well-known for their knowledge of tropical jungles.
Until 1963, indigenous Fijians, as well as Indian laborers, were not enfranchised, and had no representation in the colonial government. One of the highest ranking Fijian chiefs, Ratu Sukana, promised to fight for Fijian independence, continuing to push for independence until his death in 1958. Like many islands in the Pacific, Fiji remained a British colony for many years, before finally gaining independence in 1970. However, Fiji's route to independence has not been a smooth one. Several coup attempts as recently as 2006 demonstrate continuing strife between native Fijians, Indians, Europeans and other groups.

Places to Go in the South Pacific
The South Pacific is renowned for a lot more than just being the name of a popular Broadway musical. It’s also the location of breathtaking tropical islands, Polynesian culture, world war two historical sites, coral reefs, volcanoes, and more. There are thousands of tropical islands in the area that make fabulous holiday spots. Some of the more well known islands are Fiji, French Polynesia, The Cook Islands, Vanuatu, and Micronesia.
There are a lot of tropical islands to choose from, there is something for everybody in the South Pacific. Some islands are so small they are only beach and a nearby coral reef. Other islands are so gigantic they have volcanoes, a lot of animals, and even canyons. For any lover of tropical beaches, there are many options if you head to this part of the world. Here is a quick round up of the highlights:
For those seeking adventure, Fiji remains the best island to choose from. This country has some 322 islands and less than a third are inhabited. Most of the action happens on the western islands. Fiji has excellent diving and Kadavu is one of Fiji’s best dive sites. The more energetic can go trekking in the Nausori Highlands overlooking Nadi. Taveuni also offers good hiking in the Bouma National Heritage Parki.
If you want a romantic holiday,, French Polynesia is one of the best romantic island destinations in the world. Tahiti is famous for its expensive resorts whose bungalows sit over the ocean, providing an excellent way to take a morning swim- simply dive out of your bed! There are fancy spas, hikes, sailing expeditions, and tours specially designed for couples. Be warned though- French Polynesia is not cheap and trips to Tahiti could be expensive
Islands like Vanuatu and Micronesia are good off the beaten track islands. Vanautu lies just south of the Solomon Islands. The real attraction of Vanuatu is its phenomenal sightseeing. Underwater visibility at its peak hits fifty meters, revealing limitless schools of colorful fish darting around spectacular coral reefs, as well as a formidable array of submerged WWII wreckages. Above sea level, the scenery only gets more amazing.
Visitors to Micronesia can enjoy spectacular diving at the many underwater wrecks in Chuuk. The ruins of Nan Madol in Pohnpei are also worth the trip, providing a fascinating view back to the 13th century Saudeleur dynasty who ruled there. Or just want to calm down, find a nice coral atoll and take in the beautiful weather It's the kind of place where you pack your watch away and forget about time for a while. Don't forget the sunscreen though.
If you want Polynesian culture, unspoiled by mass tourism, The Cook Islands are where you should go. The Cook Islands Polynesian culture is famous for a number of things. Woodcarving is a common art form in the Cook Islands. Each island is famous for something unique. Rarotonga is known for its fisherman's gods and staff-gods, Atiu for its wooden seats, Mitiaro, Mauke and Atiu for mace and slab gods and Mangaia for its ceremonial adzes.
For those looking for spectacular island destinations, you can’t beat the South Pacific islands. These islands offer some of the best beaches, best diving, best ocean on the planet. There is also great food and culture here too. Polynesian culture is rich, diverse and has a long history. After a long day in the sun, there is nothing like a little outdoor BBQ and dance to make the perfect tropical island day even better. By far, I believe that the best tropical islands are in this part of the world.

Why is tourism an important industry in many Pacific Islands?
1. Why is tourism an important industry in many Pacific Islands?
And if someone can also answer this.....
2. Why does the nation of West Samoa discourage tourism?
Thank you!!
1. Why is tourism an important industry in many Pacific Islands?
Revenue or more simply, money.
Industrialization and commercialization is limited on the islands as compared to the North American continent.
2. Why does the nation of West Samoa discourage tourism?
They do not discourage tourism rather, they are more closely aligned with the cultures to their west, New Zealand and Australia.
At the turn of the twentieth century, the Tripartite Convention partitioned the Samoan Islands into two parts: the eastern island group became a territory of the United States, the Tutuila Islands in 1900 and officially Manu'a in 1904, and is today known as American Samoa; the western islands, by far the greater landmass, became known as German Samoa after Britain vacated all claims to Samoa and accepted termination of German rights in Tonga and certain areas in the Solomon Islands and West Africa.
In July 1997, the constitution was amended to change the country's name from Western Samoa to Samoa. The U.S. territory of American Samoa protested the move, asserting that the change diminished its own identity.
American Samoans still use the terms Western Samoa and Western Samoans to describe the independent State of Samoa and its inhabitants. While the two Samoas share language and ethnicity, their cultures have recently followed different paths, with American Samoans often emigrating to Hawaiʻi and the U.S. mainland, and adopting many U.S. customs, such as the playing of American football and baseball.
Western Samoans have tended to emigrate instead to New Zealand, whose influence has made the sports of rugby and cricket more popular in the western islands. Travel writer Paul Theroux noted that there were marked differences between the societies in Samoa and American Samoa.
See the links below for additional information. Hope this helps.
