The Star Wars trilogy had the rare distinction of becoming more than just a series of movies, but a cultural phenomenon, a life-defining event for its generation. On its surface, George Lucas's original 1977 film is a rollicking and humorous space fantasy that owes debts to more influences than one can count on two hands, but filmgoers became entranced by its basic struggle of good vs. evil "a long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away," its dazzling special effects, and a mythology of Jedi Knights, the Force, and droids. In the first film, Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) gets to live out every boy's dream: ditch the farm and rescue a princess (Carrie Fisher). Accompanied by the roguish Han Solo (Harrison Ford, the only principal who was able to cross over into stardom) and trained by Jedi master Obi-Wan Kenobi (Alec Guinness), Luke finds himself involved in a galactic war against the Empire and the menacing Darth Vader (David Prowse, voiced by James Earl Jones). The following film, The Empire Strikes Back (1980), takes a darker turn as the tiny rebellion faces an overwhelming onslaught. Directed by Irvin Kershner instead of Lucas, Empire is on the short list of Best Sequels Ever, marked by fantastic settings (the ice planet, the cloud city), the teachings of Yoda, a dash of grown-up romance, and a now-classic "revelation" ending. The final film of the trilogy, Return of the Jedi (1983, directed by Richard Marquand), is the most uneven. While the visual effects had taken quantum leaps over the years, resulting in thrilling speeder chases and space dogfights, the story is an uneasy mix of serious themes (Luke's maturation as a Jedi, the end of the Empire-rebellion showdown) and the cuddly teddy bears known as the Ewoks. Years later, George Lucas transformed his films into "special editions" by adding new scenes and special effects, which were greeted mostly by shrugs from fans. They were perfectly happy with the films they had grown up with (who cares if Greedo shot first?), and thus disappointed by Lucas's decision to make the special editions the only versions available. --David Horiuchi

With the famed puppet troupe's heyday behind them, it's up to young Muppet Walter, his human brother Gary (Jason Segel, who also co-wrote), and Gary's girlfriend Mary (Amy Adams) to bring Kermit the Frog, Miss Piggy, Fozzie Bear, and the rest of the gang back together in order to put on a show and save the Muppet Theater from a greedy oil baron (Chris Cooper). Rashida Jones also stars in this fun-filled blend of music and laughs. Includes the tunes "Life's a Happy Song," "Man or Muppet," and more. 103 min. Widescreen; Soundtracks: English Dolby Digital 5.1, Dolby Digital stereo, French, Spanish; Subtitles: English (SDH), French, Spanish; audio commentary; featurettes; deleted scenes; bloopers; soundtrack download card; more. Also includes a DVD version of the film. Three-disc set.
Movies attempting to retrieve cherished nuggets of pop culture often stumble, either by appealing solely to the die-hard minutia enthusiasts or clunking up the batter with unnecessary additions to the base material. (Enough with the human love triangles, get to the giant robots fighting.) Thankfully, this revival of Jim Henson's beloved characters gets the formula delightfully right, providing a googly-eyed nostalgia trip for adults while also retaining the original's sense of bright (and mildly subversive) wonder. All that's missing is a cameo from Shields and Yarnell, really. Kicking off with a boffo musical number, the story follows Walter (voice of Peter Linz), a small-town boy with a uniquely personal affection for the long-retired Muppets. (OK, he's made of felt.) Teaming up with his brother (Jason Segel, who also co-scripted) and the local schoolteacher (Amy Adams), they attempt to get Kermit, Fozzie, and the gang back together in order to save their studio from an evil oil baron (Chris Cooper, going all in). Director James Bobin (Flight of the Conchords) does a marvelous job of updating and honoring his material, weaving sly references to days gone by (the contents of Kermit's rolodex are a particular delight) into the mix of songs, celebrity cameos, and barn-broad puns that gave the original show its bubbly kick. (Fans of Animal and the Chickens will not go home disappointed.) Even the moments that don't quite work land with a cornball brio that feels wholly of a piece with Henson's universe. The result is a true family movie that still brings on the blissful, uncomplicated grins days after viewing. No matter what Statler and/or Waldorf might say, the show goes on. --Andrew Wright Related Products Amazon's Disney Store Amazon's Muppets Store More Muppets in Movies & TV Versions of The Muppets on Blu-ray and DVD The Muppets The Muppets (Single-Disc DVD + Soundtrack Download Card) The Muppets (Two-Disc Blu-ray/DVD Combo) The Muppets (Three-Disc Combo: Blu-ray/DVD/Digital Copy + Soundtrack Download Card) Release Date March 20, 2012 March 20, 2012 March 20, 2012 March 20, 2012 Format/Disc # DVD DVD + Soundtrack Download Card Blu-ray, DVD Blu-ray, DVD, Digital Copy + Soundtrack Download Card Blu-ray No No Yes Yes DVD Yes Yes Yes Yes Digital Copy No No No Yes Bonus Features None DVD Feature Film+ BonusDigital Full-Length Original SoundtrackThe Longest Blooper Reel Ever Made (In Muppet History**) Blu-ray Feature Film + BonusDVD Feature Film+ BonusScratching the Surface: A Hasty Examination of The Making of The MuppetsA Little Screen Test on the Way to the Read ThroughExplaining Evil: The Full Tex Richman Song Deleted ScenesAudio CommentaryDisney IntermissionThe Longest Blooper Reel Ever Made (In Muppet History**) Same as The Muppets (Two-Disc Blu-ray/DVD Combo) plus:Digital CopyDigital Full-Length Original Soundtrack

The Secret World of Arrietty (Two-Disc Blu-ray/DVD Combo)

The Secret World of Arrietty is a remake of the magical fairy tale The Borrowers, as seen through the keen, imaginative eye of Japanese writer Hayao Miyazaki. The American version of this delicately, richly animated film is that rarest of children's movies--one that is a deeply engaging experience for adults as well. The visuals and graphics are gasp-inducing, yet never over the top or too showy. And the actors dubbing Arrietty in English, including standouts Amy Poehler, Will Arnett, and Carol Burnett, are expressive and emotive. The Secret World of Arrietty tells the tale of a small family of "borrowers," tiny people who live underneath the homes of the "beans" (human beings). The borrowers must stealthily gather small bits of items they need--a sugar cube, a sheet of tissue, biscuits--from the upstairs without being discovered by the beans. Arrietty is a plucky teenager (voice by Bridgit Mendler) whose parents (Poehler and Arnett) think she's ready for her first "borrowing" excursion. But meanwhile, a young "bean" named Shawn has moved into the house above them, to rest and prepare for a heart operation, and to be cared for by the flighty Hara (Burnett). Shawn thinks he might have seen⦠something⦠moving in the meadow where he rests and reads. It's not giving away too much to say that Arrietty and Shawn brush against each other's lives--and neither's is the same afterward. For any fans of Miyazaki's other films, and anyone of any age seeking immersive family-friendly entertainment that's life-affirming, The Secret World of Arrietty is a winning experience. --A.T. Hurley
Mary Norton's novel "The Borrowers" gets an anime updating in this fun family tale co-written by Hayao Miyazaki. Arrietty is a normal teenage girl--who just happens to be four inches tall. As a Borrower, a race of beings who secretly live in peoples' houses, she and her family must remain unseen by human eyes. But they find their world turned upside down when Arrietty forms a friendship with a young human boy. Features the voices of Bridgit Mendler, David Henrie, Will Arnett, Amy Poehler. 95 min. Widescreen; Soundtracks: Japanese DTS HD 5.1 Master Audio, English DTS HD 5.1 Master Audio, French Dolby Digital 5.1; Subtitles: English, French; featurette; music videos; storyboards; theatrical trailers; TV spots. In Japanese with English subtitles/Dubbed in English. Also includes a DVD version of the film. Two-disc set.

One of the most acclaimed and treasured animated films of all time is about to sweep you off your feet. Follow the adventures of Belle, a bright young woman who finds herself in the castle of a prince who's been turned into a mysterious beast. With the help of the castle's enchanted staff, Belle soon learns the most important lesson of all -- that true beauty comes from within. An all-new digital restoration and exciting new bonus features make this Special Edition more magical than ever. Be our guest and let the music you'll never forget and the characters who will fill your heart cast a shimmering spell like never before.Product Measures: 0.61" x 5.34" x 7.5"
The film that officially signaled Disney's animation renaissance (following The Little Mermaid) and the only animated feature to receive a Best Picture Oscar nomination, Beauty and the Beast remains the yardstick by which all other animated films should be measured. It relates the story of Belle, a bookworm with a dotty inventor for a father; when he inadvertently offends the Beast (a prince whose heart is too hard to love anyone besides himself), Belle boldly takes her father's place, imprisoned in the Beast's gloomy mansion. Naturally, Belle teaches the Beast to love. What makes this such a dazzler, besides the amazingly accomplished animation and the winning coterie of supporting characters (the Beast's mansion is overrun by quipping, dancing household items) is the array of beautiful and hilarious songs by composer Alan Menken and the late, lamented lyricist Howard Ashman. (The title song won the 1991 Best Song Oscar, and Menken's score scored a trophy as well.) The downright funniest song is "Gaston," a lout's paean to himself (including the immortal line, "I use antlers in all of my de-co-ra-ting"). "Be Our Guest" is transformed into an inspired Busby Berkeley homage. Since Ashman's passing, animated musicals haven't quite reached the same exhilarating level of wit, sophistication, and pure joy. --David Kronke --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Worry not, Disney fans--this special edition DVD of the beloved Cinderella won't turn into a pumpkin at the strike of midnight. One of the most enduring animated films of all time, the Disney-fied adaptation of the gory Brothers Grimm fairy tale became a classic in its own right, thanks to some memorable tunes (including "A Dream Is a Wish Your Heart Makes," "Bibbidi-Bobbidi-Boo," and the title song) and some endearingly cute comic relief. The famous slipper (click for larger image) We all know the story--the wicked stepmother and stepsisters simply won't have it, this uppity Cinderella thinking she's going to a ball designed to find the handsome prince an appropriate sweetheart, but perseverance, animal buddies, and a well-timed entrance by a fairy godmother make sure things turn out all right. There are a few striking sequences of pure animation--for example, Cinderella is reflected in bubbles drifting through the air--and the design is rich and evocative throughout. It's a simple story padded here agreeably with comic business, particularly Cinderella's rodent pals (dressed up conspicuously like the dwarf sidekicks of another famous Disney heroine) and their misadventures with a wretched cat named Lucifer. There's also much harrumphing and exposition spouting by the King and the Grand Duke. It's a much simpler and more graceful work than the more frenetically paced animated films of today, which makes it simultaneously quaint and highly gratifying. --David Kronke DVD Features For another of its classic films, Disney delivers another dazzling DVD with a gorgeous, razor-sharp picture and 5.1 sound. (Note: the 1949 film is properly presented in full-screen format, 1.33 aspect ratio, because widescreen films weren't made until the '50s.) The best part of the supplemental features is the archival material, the absolute highlight of which is two unused songs, "Cinderella's Work Song" (in which Cinderella imagines multiplying herself à la the Sorcerer's Apprentice) and "Dancing on a Cloud." Bippity-boppity-boo! (click for larger image) Because these numbers were never animated, they're accompanied by stylish illustrations from the Disney artists, and they're simply marvelous to look at. The artist of much of that material, Mary Blair, gets her due in a 15-minute featurette, while the better known "Nine Old Men" are the subject of a round-table discussion among some of today's top animators. In addition, a 38-minute documentary covers their contributions to specific characters of Cinderella as well as the film in general and the vocal cast. Also on the historical side is "The Cinderella That Almost Was," tracking the development of the project through decades of original Disney concepts, characters, and songs, including the 1922 silent "Laugh-o-Gram," which is also included in its entirety. The pumpkin transformed (click for larger image) Additional musical material includes three radio programs and a short promo of the movie by Perry Como, in which he summarizes the plot amid some songs by the Fontaine Sisters, star Ilene Woods, and the host himself. Seven other unused songs (17 minutes total) are available in audio-only. The material for kids is on the sparse side, consisting of two music videos, Disney Channel personality Sally (from "Mike's Super Short Show") learning how to become a princess with the help of the Extreme Makeover: Home Edition crew and others, a minor dancing-princess feature, and a DVD-ROM design studio. Oddest extra: ESPN's "top Cinderella stories," including the 1980 U.S. Olympic hockey team and Joe Namath's New York Jets, although stories on Mia Hamm and tennis's Williams sisters should appeal to the film's primary target audience of young girls. --David Horiuchi Cinderella Throughout the Years Rodgers & Hammerstein's Cinderella (1957 Television Production) Rodgers & Hammerstein's Cinderella (1965) The Slipper and the Rose (1976) Faerie Tale Theatre - Cinderella (1982) Rodgers & Hammerstein's Cinderella (1997) Ever After - A Cinderella Story(1998)

How To Choose a New Digital Camera
Having trouble choosing a digital camera? This article presents all of the things that you should consider before you spend your hard-earned money.
We all know that having great pictures of our lives adds so much to our memories of wonderful events that have happened. Sites such as Facebook and MySpace are great social networking tools, but, in reality, most people visit these sites to look at the latest pictures of themselves and their friends. The value of having a great camera cannot be underestimated.
The first question that you must ask is: Should I upgrade? You probably already have a digital camera. It might be a little older and more bulky than the current digital camera offerings. With new digital cameras coming out everyday, you have certainly wondered whether you should keep your existing camera or upgrade to a new, sleek model.
Let's look at the facts that you should consider.
The first thing everyone looks at in a digital camera is the number of megapixels. In all probability, your camera does not have as many megapixels as the new ones on the market today. You may have 5 or 3.2 megapixels in your existing camera while most of the new digital cameras have 8, 10, or even 12 megapixels.
We need to ask: Is this important?
The answer is yes, especially if you want to print your photos. For instance, your older 3.2 megapixel camera can produce decent 4X6 photos but as you increase the size that you want to print, the quality will diminish. New cameras of 8 megapixels or more can print just about any size photos. When you have more than 8 megapixels, the camera lens usually becomes the limitation.
If you are an amateur photographer, you want to take note of the optical zoom of the lens. (You will often see a "digital zoom" specified in advertisements but this is not important.) Your old digital camera probably has unsatisfactory optical zoom. To me, optical zoom is very important as it allows you to take great pictures at greater distances. The minimum standard now-a-days is 3X optical zoom, but I would suggest looking for cameras that have a greater number, such as 4X or 5X optical zoom.
One factor that is often overlooked is the portability of the camera. We are able to take so many pictures today because cameras are so small and portable. If you would like to take pictures anywhere, you must have your camera with you at all times. Ask the question: Will it fit easily in my pocket or purse? Today, you do not have to sacrifice quality just because you want a small camera.
Perhaps the most important consideration in your purchase is the viewing screen. Why? Well, a good portion of the fun with new digital cameras is the ability to look at the photo immediately after you take it. For this, you need to have a great LCD screen on the camera. If you are unable to look at a camera before you purchase it, pay particular attention to what people say about the viewing area. Is it large enough? Does it have a bright LCD so that you can view the pictures in the daytime or nighttime?
So what would be my suggestions? There are currently two new Canon cameras on the market that meet the criteria above. First, is the PowerShot SD780IS. It meets all of our criteria above and is probably the most stylish point and shoot camera that you can currently buy. And secondly, I would point out the Powershot SD880IS. It too meets our guidelines for quality and portability and comes with a 4X stabilized zoom, allowing great pictures from afar.
If you look at these criteria--megapixels, zoom, portability, and quality of the viewfinder--you will always choose wisely. Finally, if you are buying online, be sure to read all the reviews of others to ensure that they are satisfied with their new digital camera.

How do I get pictures off of old digital camera?
I have an old Canon S230 Digital Elph with the Zoombrowser software that came with it 5 years ago. I recently bought a new Elph SD1100, I think. The new software overwrote the old. When I try to upload photos off old camera with it, it says no camera is recognized. I went to the Canon website and downloaded the update but it still says no camera is recognized. Help! What can I do? How do I get them onto my computer or Shutterfly? They are very important to me. Thank you!
You will have to get a USB card reader and put your old CF card in it and use your computer skills to copy them to your computer.
If you buy a card reader that will take both CF and SD cards, you will be able to use it when transferring your images from your new camera too... keeping your camera out of the loop a good thing
It's not you, it's my email: digital dumping on rise
Digital dumping is on the rise, with people increasingly using emails, text messages and social networking websites to split up with their partners, Reuters reported last week. Few people dump in person any more. With all the emailing, texting and online social networking that modern life entails, who's got the time?
Thanks for visiting!
