Are these really good programs for animation?
NewTek Lighwave 3D 9, Adobe Creative Suite 4 Design Premium, and Maxon Cinema 4D. I have been looking at these programs for animation (video games and animated movies) But i honestly don't know if they are as good as they say they are. So let me know what you think of these programs for those purposes.

Adobe Creative Suite 4 Design Premium may be overkill for video games and animated movies. For video games you probably will need a game engine as well (are you planning on doing moding? or building from scratch?) If you are doing flash games or 2d animation, then I can see you just needing Flash CS4 Professional. The rest of the stuff is focused on building your website and presenting everything -- you may need it, but if you're just focused on animation and not on building an entire web-site will all the bells/whistles, then it's definately overkill.
For 3d animation, Lightwave and Cinema 4D are both very good programs used by professionals. But arguably, they are middle-tier. Lightwave used to be on top, particularly with tv production, but that's been a while.
The programs owned by autodesk (Maya, 3d Max and XSI) are generally considered top tier. Maya was used for animating in most of the projects by Weta (Lord of the Rings), Sony (SpiderMan), and Industrial Light and Magic (Star Wars).
