The mission was dangerous, the rocket unpredictable, but the fledgling American space program was too far behind the Soviets to wait for better odds. Halfway through the mission, Glenn learned that the heat shield designed to protect him from burning up on reentry had been compromised. But despite these dramatic obstacles, Glenn was able to complete his mission. When he returned from orbit, he took his place in America's memory as one of the greatest heroes. Now 36 years later, John Glenn prepares to make history in space a second time: the first American to orbit the Earth will soon be the oldest person in the world ever to do so. At 78, Glenn has survived Project Mercury and served 4 years in Congress. He returns to orbit on the Space Shuttle as a payload specialist, bringing a lifetime of experience, a history in space, and a wealth of physical data to the study of humans in space.
