Two decades years after Live Aid addressed the issue, lethally oppressive poverty in Africa remains a blight on the planet. Thus, in the Summer of 2005 activist Bob Geldof staged an even more ambitious series of continent-spanning concerts dedicated to raising funds and public consciousness about international debt relief. This expansive four-disc chronicles those shows in one of the most ambitious concert documents ever attempted, capturing all of the highlights (and a few complete artist sets) of concerts in London, Philadelphia, Toronto, Paris, Berlin and Moscow. Underscoring the events' sense of unity, the performances here span both generations and genres, offering veteran rock fans often muscular sets by Elton John (including a woozy take on T. Rex's "Children of the Revolution" with Baby Shambles' Pete Doherty), The Who, Sting (who sharply reprises a trio of Police favorites) and the ubiquitous Paul McCartney. But the highlight of the Jurassic set's contributions are a reunion of Roger Waters and his long-estranged Pink Floyd bandmates on a sonically flawless five-song whirl through highlights of Dark Side of the Moon, Wish You Were Here and The Wall; footage of their rehearsal for the show is contained on the set's equally eclectic fourth disc of bonus materials. But there are highlights here for nearly every taste, be they a fine sampling of contemporary UK and Australian rockers ( Coldplay, Jet, Razorlight and especially blistering performances by Stereophonics and Kaiser Chiefs), a little hip-hop nostalgia (a joyous Will Smith and Jazzy Jeff leading what seems half of his Philly hometown in a goofy singalong of the "Fresh Prince of Bel Air" theme); showy turns by pop-meister Robbie Williams and chateuses Mariah Carey, a rousing set by Black Eyed Peas (featuring Rita and Stephen Marley on a cover of "Get Up Stand Up"). Other one-off duets include Coldplay and Richard Ashcroft doing a fine version of the latter's "Bittersweet Symphony," Stevie Wonder with Rob Thomas ("Higher Ground") and Adam Levine ("Signed Sealed Delivered"), a tender take on "Angel" by Sarah McLachlan and Josh Groban and McCartney and George Michael taking an upbeat turn via "Drive My Car," before Macca closes out the London show by leading its various participants in an obligatory singalong of "Hey Jude." Royalties from sales of the set will go to the Band Aid Trust for the relief of hunger and poverty in Africa. --Jerry McCulley

Liszt: The Two Piano Concertos; The Piano Sonata
List Price: $9.98
Sale Price: $5.54

Since they were first issued, Sviatoslov Richter's Liszt Piano Concertos have been widely admired as the finest performances available, and for most listeners they still are. Now they have been remastered by none other than Wilma Cozart Fine, Mercury Living Presence's goddess of the sound console, and they have come up sounding better than ever. To make matters even more exciting, you also get Richter's well-nigh definitive performance of the massive Sonata in B Minor--and all for only mid-price! Even if you hate Liszt, hate concertos, hate pianos, hate Russians, hate music in general, you should own and treasure (or punish yourself regularly) with this recording. --David Hurwitz
Although Sviatoslav Richter's account has power and authority, it's best in the meditative moments, which are almost balletic in their grace. The Russian pianist achieves seamless transitions from one mood to the next, and his countryman on the podium sees to it that there is a wonderful dovetailing of the accompaniment around the solo. Richter is especially magical at the end of the Adagio, where he anticipates the shadings of Liszt's late style. This was originally a Mercury "Living Presence" recording; it has been tellingly remastered by its original producer, and sounds remarkably more vivid than when Philips first issued it on CD. --Ted Libbey

Magnum, P.I. - The Complete Second Season

All 22 episodes from season two--including "Billy Joe Bob," "From Moscow to Maui," "The Joroco Kill," "Texas Lightning," and "Three Minus Two"--are featured in a three-disc set. 18 hrs. total. Standard; Soundtrack: English Dolby Digital stereo; Subtitles: French, Spanish; bonus "Knight Rider," "The A-Team" episodes. **22 episodes on 3 discs. 18 hrs.**
Return to the Big Island for more adventure with Tom Selleck's charmingly roguish detective hero, Thomas Magnum, courtesy of this three-disc set, which compiles the entire second season (1981-1982) of Magnum, P.I.. The 22 episodes included here (among them the two-part "Memories Are Forever") crystallize the key to the series' success: an appealing blend of action, drama, mystery, and comedy, cemented by Selleck and his likable castmates, especially John Hillerman, who would earn a Golden Globe for his work on Magnum in '82. Highlights of the season include Magnum's attempt to stop an international assassin ("The Jororo Kill," with Tyne Daly), the arrival of Hemingway-esque author Mad Buck Gibson (Darren McGavin) in the episode of the same name, and the aforementioned two-parter, which reunites Magnum with a woman he thought to have died after marrying her while serving in Vietnam. The usual array of classy guest stars are also on hand for this season; in addition to the aforementioned actors, there are turns by Mimi Rogers, Vic Morrow, Vera Miles, Jill St. John, and Elisha Cook Jr. (who plays a much different character than his recurring role as "Ice Pick" in future seasons). And Magnum obsessives should note early appearances by Gillian Dobb, who played Agatha Chumley in numerous subsequent episodes, as well as one of Higgins's colorful, estranged half-brothers in "The Elmo Ziller Story." It's unfortunate that the set itself doesn't match the quality of the Episodes--extras are limited to second-season episodes from Knight Rider and The A-Team--but Magnum fans should be pleased to have all the episodes in a single set, and best of all, commercial-free. --Paul Gaita

Reilly - Ace of Spies
List Price: $39.95
Sale Price: $18.49
|
|
|
Reilly: Ace of Spies is a thrilling dramatization of the fantastic life and exploits of Sidney Reilly, arguably the first modern secret agent and a complex, often unfathomable individual who invented his very name and identity. Sam Neill has never been better as the former Sigmund Rosenblum, an Odessa-born Jew who becomes a freelance spy for the British at the dawn of the 20th century. Calculating, ruthless, and more certain of his own counsel than the wisdom of his superiors, Reilly (he changes his name by the end of the first episode, "An Affair with a Married Woman," to obscure his personal history) can't help but remind one of a particularly determined James Bond. Reilly's reputation as a womanizer--not entirely deserved, but then none of his associates can quite figure out his thriving love life--adds to this historical figure's Bondian mystique. In other respects, Reilly's version of espionage is far more complicated, and has greater historical repercussions, than that of Fleming's superspy. The first half of the 12 episodes in this set concern Reilly's daring work ascertaining and even securing the West's access to Middle East oil and, looking ahead to Russia's possible rise as a major power, determine the extent of that country's oil reserves. At the same time, Reilly always has one eye trained on ethically ambiguous opportunities to accrue wealth or play one friendly interest against another. The oil mission leads him from virtual house arrest in the foothills of the Caucuses (where Reilly sleeps with the young wife of an aging preacher as cover for his escape, leaves her to be arrested, then later marries her) to Port Arthur in China (where he clears the way for British allies the Japanese to invade) to France (where Reilly competes with the Rothschilds over Persian Oil concessions). The latter episodes focus on Reilly's extraordinary attempt to overthrow the Bolsheviks following the Russian revolution, barely escaping St. Petersburg after a botched attempt to assassinate Lenin and later risking his life by returning and advocating the killing of Stalin. Throughout this ever-changing drama, the series' writing is a marvel of historical fact and intriguing speculation about Reilly's whereabouts, exploits, and private passions. The supporting cast is superb, including David Burke as Stalin and Tom Bell as Russia's secret police chief Dzerzhinsky. The series was co-directed by Martin Campbell, who took on Pierce Brosnan's first assignment as 007, GoldenEye. --Tom Keogh
Decades before James Bond was a gleam in Ian Fleming's eye, British undercover agent Sydney Reilly set the tone for all subsequent superspies with his daring real-life exploits. Sam Neill stars as Reilly in this acclaimed BBC mystery series. Standard; Soundtrack: English Dolby Digital stereo; bonus program "Life of Reilly, The Super Spy." 12 episodes on 4 discs. 10 1/2 hrs.

Existing Hotels in Moscow
Fortunately for Moscow visitors, there are now more choices of hotels in Moscow that exist and are functional than may have been possible in years past. You can choose between the old-timer hotels in Moscow like the Hotel Metropol, or the new kids on the block that can easily be distinguished from the old-timers by their new types of architecture. And of course the pricing for each is different so you need to be astute at comparing services and prices for hotels in Moscow to know which is the best for your needs.
To start with, there is the Baltschug Kempinski Hotel that was built to one side of the Moscow River. It was designed to serve the lodging needs of people on business or on leisure pursuits. Prices of rooms here start at 430 US dollars.
The Golden Ring Hotel is quite near the Kremlin and the Red Square. Because of its location within the heart of the city, you may find this hotel to be suited to your city exploration needs. Prices of rooms start at 218 US dollars at the Golden Ring Hotel.
If you need a place with sizeable and functional conference halls, then you may be interested in staying at the Izmailovo Gamma Delta hotel so it can host your business-related events. This hotel also serves tourists, athletes, and businessmen at the same time. Prices of rooms start at 129 US dollars here.
The Hotel National is sometimes known as the National Hotel, but both names refer to the same building. You can choose between a standard single room, a standard double room, a double deluxe room, and a luxurious suite for your stay. Prices per room start at 240 US dollars.
If you want modern hotels in Moscow to choose from, then you might want to stay at Radisson Sas Slavyanskaya. This hotel offers both a convenient location in the middle of the city, and comfortable lodgings, to travelers out on business. In fact, the hotel can accommodate your business event hosting requirements as well. Prices per room begin at 260 US dollars.
Despite looking like an office building more than one of the modern hotels in Moscow, the Sheraton Palace Hotel has been able to win the appreciation of well-known personalities and businesspeople in the more than 10 years of service it has pursued in the city. It boasts of state-of-the art equipment and first-class accommodations, coupled with the Russian brand of hospitality. Prices per room start at 372 US dollars.
The commonality such hotels in Moscow have is that they all allow you to stay within the city of Moscow which is the economic, political, and scientific nerve center of Russia. Hotels in Moscow have reached modern-day status too because it is possible to inquire about lodgings and book accommodations in advance at these hotels via their online booking system. You may also want to ask about other features of Moscow life such as theaters, cinemas, and shopping centers at the Moscow hotels you contact so that you know which of these places you would probably want to visit while you’re in the city. And remember that Moscow is full of historical and cultural places that Russians are proud of so be sure to complete your visit by going to at least some of them while you’re in Moscow, Russia.

My friends bag on me for being Russian?
Last week, my friends and I were talking about where we were from, and I said Moscow, Russia (because that's actually where I was born; and it comes complete with a russian name...my name's natascha vladimirova....) and ever since, they've been ragging on me. It's annoying. They call me the "Rousche" AKA russian douche bag and the "russian bastard". they also make remarks about the russian mafia....and it's getting old.
how do i make them STFU? i'm sick of hearing "oh, hey look, it's natascha the rousche.
I love Russian people.
After Vancouver, now it's Russia's turn in 2014
From the Pacific coast to the shores of the Black Sea. From the peaks of western Canada to the Caucasus mountains of southern Russia. From gleaming North American skyline to palm-fringed resort in the former Soviet Union.
Thanks for visiting!
