Moist von Lipwig is in trouble. Again. His dodgy past is behind him, he has a secure job running the Post Office, and he's engaged to a wonderful woman. Indeed, he is becoming a respectable citizen of Ankh-Morpork. Which is a bit boring, but it beats the alternative.
His comfortable life is not meant to last for long. Before he knows it, he's in charge of the bank and Royal Mint, and he has to keep the Chairman alive. Some people are rather unhappy about the situation. Some people would rather see him gone. And his past is catching up on him...
This second book about Moist von Lipwig is a delightful addition to the Discworld series. As usual, the plot is interesting and the characters are intriguing and utterly believable. It's a journey of smiles and giggles, often insightful, never dull and everything comes neatly together in the end. The unexpected twists and turns were a wonderful bonus.
Some people say that Terry Pratchett just doesn't write like he used to. I agree. I think he's improving with each novel. I liked the first few books in the Discworld series, but I love the newer ones. I feel that Pratchett has matured as a writer. His books show a practiced confidence, yet they never lack imagination or creativity.
The extra characters in "Making Money" demonstrate this fact. The character of Cosmo, for example, is so well-described that I could easily picture the man and his decline into a world of delusion. Pratchett's insight into human nature has always been extraordinary. Professor Flead is hilarious. I would never have guessed the real secret of Mr. Bent, but it all added up.
I loved learning more about Lord Vetinari, who has always been one of my favourite characters. I also liked how Pratchett worked some of the other regular characters into this story. It makes Ankh-Morpork feel familiar, a place that's somehow become a bit like home throughout the series - a place that's enjoyable to visit again and again.
I would recommend this book to anyone. If you are new to the Discworld series, you will find yourself right at home with this latest installment. Each book can be read on its own. However, you are missing out, because all the books are worthy of at least one read each. If you are already familiar with the Discworld, you won't be disappointed with "Making Money".
According to the author's bio, Terry Pratchett lives behind a keyboard in Wiltshire and says he 'doesn't want to get a life, because it feels as though he's trying to lead three already'. He was appointed OBE in 1998 and his first Discworld novel for children, "The Amazing Maurice and His Educated Rodents" was awarded the 2001 Carnegie Medal.
