Her intensely personal lyrics grabbed the headlines, but the bravest departure here is the way Morissette's unique vocals stand naked in the mix--a technique that drives home the painful honesty of tracks like "Right Through You," "Forgiven," and "All I Really Want." Sheryl Crow or an earthier Tori Amos are fair analogies, but Morissette is a genuine original with a rare ability to make listeners care, think, and question. --Jeff Bateman

The Best Of The Doors The Best Of The Doors
List Price: $18.98
Sale Price: $18.97

The Best of The Doors delivers exactly what it promises. Rather than relying solely on the hits, this collection also mines the darker, and often richer, recesses of The Doors material resulting in a fairly representative statement. The hits are here: "Light My Fire" with Ray Manzarek's keyboards on a dizzy, psychedelic spree; "People Are Strange," with Morrison's tortured psyche barely being held in check; "L.A. Woman," with its bluesy sexuality. More important, favorites of fans are here, like the controversially (at the time) explicit "The End," which was one of the first of Morrison's forays into narrative poetry. In hits like "Break on Through," "Hello I Love You," "Roadhouse Blues," and others, The Doors melded psychedelia, blues, hard-edged rock, and poetry from the edge like no other band before. The Best of The Doors is a trip in every sense of the word. --Steve Gdula

House, M.D.: Season Two House, M.D.: Season Two
List Price: $39.98
Sale Price: $14.88

The overall strength of the second season of House, M.D. proves that its first-year success wasn't a fluke. This season starts with Dr. House (Golden Globe winner Hugh Laurie) pursuing his ex-wife Stacy (Sela Ward) and ending with a tragedy that could potentially be deadly for himself and two colleagues. The premise of each show follows a set routine--a patient is brought in with unusual symptoms; House challenges his trio of underlings to diagnose the problem; they treat the patient, usually incorrectly the first few tries; and then at the very last minute--through a revelation that often has little to do with the patient--House figures out what's wrong and saves the day. It would be easy for this set up to grow old fast. But because of the smart writing, nuanced acting, and believability of the characters (who're often dealing with unbelievable scenarios), the formula works on each of the 24 episodes that aired on Fox during the 2005-2006 season. Viewers have been conditioned by the Marcus Welbys of the TV world to think of doctors as saviors. Even on ER, the most narcissistic physician was selfless at heart. But House is a different breed. When he's at an off-track betting parlor and a woman collapses, he doesn't miss a beat. Still eying his race on television, he asks, "Is anybody here a doctor?" He'll mock a sick patient's complaints with a sarcastic, "Boo hoo!" And, if there happens to be a dead body around, he has no qualms about shooting it if he believes that could help diagnose another gun-shot victim. Not that he's any more reasonable or compassionate to his boss Cuddy (Lisa Edelstein), his oncologist best friend Wilson (Tony winner Robert Sean Leonard), or his young charges Foreman (Omar Epps), Cameron (Jennifer Morrison), and Chase (Jesse Spencer). He instructs his doctors to break into patients' homes as if they're cat burglars. He does not know the meaning of the phrase "politically correct." But because he spits out insults (as if he has a mild case of Tourette's) equally to both his patients and colleagues, the latter never flinch at his constant stream of inappropriateness. When his three young doctors storm into his office to report the declining condition of a patient by blurting out, "We have rectal bleeding," House says, "What? All three of you?" To sensitive Wilson, who is trying to get some work done without being interrupted, House says, "I know you're in there. I can hear you caring." And when Foreman's father says, "My son says you're a manipulative bastard," House replies, "It's a pet name. I call him Dr. Bling." Of course House actually does care about his patients, but he views a good bedside manner as the luxury of a doctor who has a healthy patient. But dying patients with seemingly incurable diseases need something more. They need House. --Jae-Ha Kim

Golden Globe winner Hugh Laurie is on call as sardonic Dr. Gregory House in Season Two of the smash-hit House, television's most intelligent and provocative drama. This 6-disc collection features all 24 innovative episodes, exclusive bonus materials and some of today's brightest guest stars, including Sela Ward, Ron Livingston, LL Cool J and Cynthia Nixon. Be a part of this medical mystery-solving team as House and his staff take on baffling cases in the gripping show critics are calling "both hilarious and heartbreaking; this could be network TV's best current series." - David Kronke, Los Angeles Daily News Starring: Hugh Laurie, Omar Epps, Jennifer Morrison, Jesse Spencer, Robert Sean Leonard, Lisa Edelstein

A delightful Musical by Rogers & Hammerstein CINDERELLA from Disney Stars include ..... Whoopie Goldberg-Brandy-Jason Alexander-Bernadette Peters-and Whitney Houston Full Length DVD from Disney New in Package

More is not necessarily better. A glitzy Hollywood cast and a big budget did not improve the wonderful 1957 teleplay (or its equally charming 1964 remake) upon which this version is based. This is partly because Brandy, cast in the title role, cannot act. Not helping matters are Whoopi Goldberg as the prince's mother and Jason Alexander as his valet. Their shtick wears thin very quickly. However, Paolo Montalban is charismatic as the prince, and Whitney Houston plays a fairy godmother with pizzazz. The production cost millions, and is certainly lavish, but the whole affair feels forced and overdone, reminding one of a prom queen wearing too much makeup. It does deserve credit for a multi-ethnic cast, the addition of two new songs and a hip attitude. However, the 1964 version (the original was not taped) is much sweeter and more romantic. Originally released as Rodgers and Hammerstein's Cinderella. --Rochelle O'Gorman

Mike Read

Continuing with the sales conversion theme, Mike Morgan addressed several issues relating to ad copy.

What's the Deal with Sales Pages, Anyway?

Too many online marketers believe that products sell themselves, and that sales pages are at best an inconvenience. Just put up any old page, and paying customers will start pouring in, right?

Mike Morgan addressed some misconceptions about sales pages, including the idea that it is an isolated part of a marketing campaign. The sales page is a part of the entire sales process, a process that may or may not include:

  • Relevant Pre-sales research
  • Face-to-face, verbal, and/or electronic communication with prospects
  • Expert sales information

There is a fine line between swiping and what Morgan calls "Falling for the Tyranny of the Familiar". Blindly pursuing trends because they worked for others does not guarantee your success. In fact, you will likely will fail because the conditions and circumstances of the other's campaign are not duplicatable nor relevant anymore.

Are Prospects Really Willing to Read Your Salesletter?

Assuming that you have not pre-sold your prospects, a winning salesletter is what stands between you and a steady stream of income. So, why would someone make the effort to read your copy? Mike and others suggest the following:

  1. Your salesletter serves as a first (primary) impression of you.
  2. People genuinely interested in your offer use sales copy to evaluate your product or service.
  3. Prospects will read most, if not all of your sales page if the offer is relevant, and the sales copy
does not put them to sleep.
  4. Marketer-to-marketer (M2M) selling is big business, especially in the various Internet marketing
niches. Sharp competitors looking to improve their own skills will "swipe" you and apply it to
their own situations. Plus, they will buy your product if they can learn from it and improve their
    own offers...

The Three Sales Conversion Master Keys.

  1. Non-copy elements that influence conversion the most:
    • An (Irresistible) Offer (product, service)
    • List of motivated subscribers; chosen target market
    • The 'hook', i.e. an attention grabbing curiosity that normally requires research to discover.
  2. Shortcuts to Winning Copy.

Swiping, i.e. "ethical stealing", is the most powerful advertising technique. It builds your copywriting DNA.
    Eventually, copy
    material becomes internalized within you.

  3. The "Dirty Little Secret": Testing!

Writing a sales letter is not the end of the process, it's just the start! You need to test, because even the best copy gets
stale with time. "Freshen up" your ads from time to time.

Practical Tactics to Consider for Your Next Campaign.

  • Consider writing your salesletter before having the actual offer in place. In fact, it may improve the final product.
  • Inject personality into your salesletter where appropriate.
  • Create a pre-notification list to attract an "affiliate army" to your offer. Provide them with the information and tools they
need to become effective ambassadors on your behalf.
  • Go into the customer's mindset ("Walk a mile in their shoes"). Ask yourself, "How does this product solve my prospect's problem?"
  • Incorporate bonuses, but test their placement on your sales page: Is it better before or after revealing the price?

e.g. After revealing the price for your main offer, write "... and to sweeten the deal", then introduce your bonuses.

Conclusion.

Do you want to know a secret? Mike Morgan revealed to his eager listeners that there is no magic sales copy formula. Rather, making money online demands a marketing mindset that visualizes every step of a campaign's sales funnel from a prospect's perspective. Then, you must test things out, evaluate preliminary results, then tweak until you achieve your goals.

Morgan aims not only to be the best copywriter, but also a sales consultant and confidante to his clients, evaluating various scenarios before selecting the best approach. The end result is a keen ability to discuss high-level campaigns with the world's best marketers. It is a skill and philosophy that distinguishes him - a sales conversion specialist - from the rest of the pack.

Mike Swick is Ready For a Title Shot

Can somebody please explain to me why Mike Swick is fighting Yushin Okami at UFC 69 in Houston Texas? Is it because Mike Swick is a home town fighter and the UFC wants to make sure that he wins? Is it because he's the only 185 pound fighter left with a shot at defeating Anderson Silva and they don't want him to lose a warm up bout? Or is it because Mike Swick isn't ready for a title shot yet?

Let's look at Yushin Okami's credentials coming into this fight. Okami's record looks impressive enough, 19-3-0 with a win over current 185 pound champion Anderson Silva. Looking a little closer however, reveals that his win over Silva was a DQ due to an illegal kick. His most notable win comes over Rory Singer by submission due to punches. However, Rory Singer is not Mike Swick.

Now, let's look at Mike Swick's fight history. I'm only going to deal with well known fighters. Mike Swick's big fights have been against Chris Legen, Joe Riggs and David Loiseau. First of all, let's deal with the one loss out of those three fights, a knockout loss to Chris Leben. This was scored in early 2004, which puts it at 3 years ago and I don't believe it's relevant given that Swick is still very young and still improving with each fight.

Mike pulled off a typical Mike "Quick" Swick guillotine, also known as "The Swickotine", Choke against Joe "Diesel" Riggs at UFC 60. He locked in the Swickotine early in the first round and I believe this is the fight where people sat up and took notice of Swick as a real contender. At the time I thought "who is this guy?", I read up on him and was impressed. However, it was hard to not notice that Matt Hughes had done something very similar in finishing off Joe Riggs quickly in a previous fight.

Swick kept up his winning ways by defeating a great striker in David "The Crow" Loiseau at UFC 63 in September 2006. It is this fight which makes me wonder if Swick is ready for a title shot against current 185 champ, Anderson Silva. If Anderson Silva has a clone, then it is the French Canadian Loiseau. Both men prefer to strike, but are competent on the ground (especially at defending submissions). Since Swick defeated Loiseau, perhaps he has a shot against Silva.

Other fighters worth noting in the 185 pound division are Rich Franklin, Jason MacDonald, Chris Leben and Ed Herman in that order. I guess the question at hand is whether Mike Swick deserves a title shot more than these other guys do. The answer is no. I believe Rich Franklin or Jason MacDonald (depending on who wins their fight at UFC 68) deserves a shot first. I also believe that the winner of Silva/Franklin or Silva/MacDonald should have to face Swick for the title. I am of course assuming that Mike Swick will make short work of Yushin Okami 69.

So, if my predictions are correct, we should be seeing Mike Swick facing one of Anderson Silva, Jason MacDonald or Rich Franklin for the UFC 185 pound belt sometime in mid to later 2007. Perhaps at UFC 71.

Take it easy and keep watching the fights!
