The first and most important is the amount of memory the laptop has installed. This will be measured in Gigabytes (GBs), where a typical laptop will have anywhere from 1GB to 4GBs of memory.
If you only plan to user your laptop for office programs or surfing the internet, 1GB of RAM will be enough to ensure your laptop is fast and smooth. If however you want to multitask and use the programs above but also use chat programs such as Skype or MSN messenger while listening to music and or watching movies, you should be looking at 2GBs of RAM to make sure your laptop will run smoothly.
Those of you that will want to play games or use intensive programs like video or graphical editing might want to consider 3GB – 4GBs even though you might be able to get away with 2GBs. If you do go with 2GBs you might need to upgrade to more memory later on as new programs will use more RAM as technology advances.

Can I use RAM memory made by Samsung for HP in a PC manufactured by another company?
I purchase brand new RAM memory manufactured by Samsung (1GB 2Rx8 PC2 4200S 444 12 E3, Part No. M470T2953EZ3-CD5) for my HP laptop (HP's Part No. 374663-935) and now I do not have any use for it and was wondering IF it can be used in another PC manufactured by someone other than HP so that I may sell it to someone that needs it?
The manufacturer don't care who made your ram. If you look at your ram that came with the HP you'll notice it is not made by hp, probably an off brand or maybe kingston. Don't worry about it, just make sure that it is the correct type of ram, DDR1 or DDR2 and the preffered speed. this will be labled on the old stick of ram. If you have a 32 bit os like xp, or vista 32 then you will only want to buy 2GB of Ram. if oyu have a 64bit veriso of vista then you will want to buy as much as you can usually 4 or 8gb
