The first sailors braved the North Sea and the Baltic in open wooden boats: their aims were varied - to fish, to trade, to conquer and plunder. Without maps or compasses, they steered by the sun or by landmarks on the coast. Nevertheless they discovered Iceland and North America and explored the rivers that flowed through Europe and Russia into the Black Sea. With the Frisians and the Vikings, extensive trade routes, better ships, larger harbours and wealthy coastal towns developed. The pinnacle of these advances was the Hansa, an association of port cities running from Bruges to Riga. In recent years archaeologists have discovered much about the development of their ships: the elegant Viking longboat, the ubiquitous cog, the carrack and the caravel. Much, too, has been revealed about life in Viking settlements and the bustling Hanseatic cities. In this engaging and highly-illustrated volume, Dirk Meier brings to life the world of the medieval seaman, based on evidence from ship excavations and contemporary accounts of voyages.

Hailing from Canada Sid Meier has established himself as one of the most creative visionaries of our time in gaming. He has designed such games like Civilization, Pirates!, Sword of the Samurai, Rollercoaster Typhoon, and Gunship. For 26 years Meier has been designing for all types of games and has truly enjoyed all of his work. In 1986 Meier and friend Bill Stealey founded the company MicroProse and the rest is history. At MicroPose Meier designed one of the games he is probably most famous for, Civilization. He has received hundreds of awards and recognitions but probably nothing as important as being only the second person to be inducted into the Interactive Arts and Science's Hall of Fame for Lifetime Achievement in 1999.
To those who know Sid Meier professionally may not know he is a choir singer for his church. He is just a regular guy to those around him, but to PC gamers he is definitely a Game God! He may sit quietly in his home in Maryland with wife and son living a normal life, but gamers have always envisioned him as something much more. More triumphant, more glorious, and more dominant like a Game God should be. However, that does not mean he does not lead a very whole and blessed life.
He has designed and produced over 30 games in the past 20 years with the help of some other talented designers and creative advisors. Meier's prodigy, John Shafer, is showing similar traits and drive to Meier from a younger age. He is merely 24 years old and has already taken on the role as lead designer for the highly anticipated Civilization V, due to be out September 2010. Meier is not the most talented designer gaming has ever seen though, so why all the hype? The great thing about Meier is that he doesn't have to be the best because he generally makes quality games. Even his older games are still selling on the shelves at stores, and are museum quality games. The way he has been able to stay on top of the designing game for over 20 years and continue to pump out hits with realistic graphics is pure genius.
When playing any Meier game you really get the feel for how things should flow. A game should keep moving and most importantly, stay fun. In the gaming world Meier is considered quite aged but instead of considering retiring, he is actively seeking new challenges. From getting his start making games with his buddies in the basement to working for Firaxis and making money producing high quality hits, Meier has truly come a long way through time. In technology measurements he truly is a visionary and has always been able to put his ideas into creations and execute any dream he had planned. A little know fact is that Meier was actually the third person to design a computer game called Civilization, which was based off an English board game. The only thing that set Meier apart is that he was the only one to create it and take it off the ground!

The Best PSP Games Of All Time
You know what they say, it’s very seldom that you get a product that satisfies both its critics and its customers. This is very true with movies. Some movies will make a killing at the box office while being lambasted by movie critics. The reverse is also true. Some movies can be critically acclaimed but may perform poorly in terms of ticket sales.
PSP games are no different. There are games that are highly rated and yet they don’t manage to crack the top ten bestselling PSP games list. Here’s a clear picture.
Wikipedia cites the following PSP games as the bestselling games of all time as of December 2008;
1. Monster Hunter Freedom Unite (3 million shipped in Japan)
2. Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories (2,725,507 approximately: 2 million in US, 125,507 in Japan, 600,000 in UK)
3. Daxter (2.3 million)
4. Monster Hunter Freedom 2 (2.25 million)
5. Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII (1.96 million during 2008)
6. Midnight Club 3: DUB Edition (1.3 million approximately: 1.1 million in US, 200,000 in UK)
7. Monster Hunter Freedom (1.2 million)
8. Need for Speed Most Wanted 5-1-0 (1,127,151 approximately: 1.1 million in US, 27,151 in Japan)
9. Hot Shots Golf: Open Tee (1 million)
10. Tekken: Dark Resurrection (1 million)
11. Wipeout Pure (1 million)[136]
Total PlayStation Portable games shipped as of December 31, 2008: 200 million.[137]
Gamespot.com however rates the following PSP games as the best games ever
1. Tekken: Dark Resurrection – 9.2
2. Daxter – 9.1
3. Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII – 9.0
4. Patapon – 9.0
5. Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops – 9.0
6. Burnout Legends – 9.0
7. Lumines – 9.0
8. Syphon Filter: Dark Mirror – 8.8
9. World Soccer Winning Eleven 9 – 8.8
10. Wipeout Pure – 8.8
11. SOCOM: U.S. Navy SEALs Fireteam Bravo – 8.7
12. FIFA Soccer 06 – 8.7
13. Sid Meier’s Pirates! – 8.6
14. MLB 06: The Show – 8.6
15. Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories – 8.6
As you may have noticed there are games in both lists that did not make into the other lists. Could be that there are market behaviours that aren’t taken into consideration when a particular video is rated. Hot Shots Golf for example.
Perhaps when Gamespot rated this game they really weren’t impressed with it. Also, maybe because the game is played more by adults somewhat diminished the game in Gamespot’s eyes, I don’t know. No matter, the game sold really well– with sales breaking the 1 million barrier. Makes you wonder if there are a lot of adults who play PSP as well. Hmmm…
Nevertheless, despite the very minor discrepancy, these lists should at least give you an idea on what games you’re still missing in your collection. You might think of getting them now.

Is sid meiers pirates any good?
the question has been asked now when will the answer arrive
I've always like sid meiers pirates...even the orginial one. The only thing I don't like about the one now is the ballroom dancing.
Baseball Lore: The '60s Bucs were bonding time
The bump on Dad's head -- the one from hitting the beams when he jumped up to cheer -- healed long ago. However, the memories of being at Forbes Field and watching Bill Mazeroski earn the Bucs the title of world champions intensify with each passing year.
Thanks for visiting!
