In Love Again - The Music of Richard Rodgers List Price: $18.99 Sale Price: $11.99 |
|
Recorded in conjunction with the 2002 Richard Rodgers centennial celebration, In Love Again is another winning album for Stacey Kent. The songs Rodgers wrote with Lorenz Hart always suit themselves naturally to jazz, so Kent covers nine of them here, including the great standards "Bewitched, Bothered & Bewildered" and "It Never Entered My Mind." There are also three of Rodgers's songs with Oscar Hammerstein II: the easy-swinging opener "Shall We Dance?," "Bali Ha'i," and "It Might as Well Be Spring," the jazziest Rodgers & Hammerstein song (no matter what John Coltrane says). Kent's crack band returns, with guitarist Colin Oxley's sensitive lines recalling Joe Pass's work with Ella Fitzgerald, and Jim Tomlinson supporting his wife on tenor sax and flute. --David Horiuchi All products are BRAND NEW and factory sealed. Driven List Price: $5.97 Sale Price: $1.30 |
|
Talented rookie race-car driver Jimmy Bly (Kip Pardue) has started losing his focus and begins to slip in the race rankings. It's no wonder, with the immense pressure being shoveled on him by his overly ambitious promoter brother as well as Bly's romance with his arch rival's girlfriend Sophia. With much riding on Bly, car owner Carl Henry (Burt Reynolds) brings former racing star Joe Tanto (Sylvester Stallone) on board to help Bly. To drive Bly back to the top of the rankings, Tanto must first deal with the emotional scars left over from a tragic racing accident which nearly took his life. Motorsport movies have a lousy track record, so it's not surprising that Driven joins the ranks of previous race-car clunkers like Grand Prix, Le Mans, Bobby Deerfield, and Days of Thunder. To varying degrees, all of these films offer spectacular racing footage (especially Le Mans), but what is surprising is that Driven was written by its star and coproducer Sylvester Stallone, who shows virtually no sign of the talent that created Rocky over a quarter-century earlier. Under the tepid direction of Renny Harlin, this superficial speedfest fulfills its primary obligation--the racing sequences are adequately exciting, despite the Cuisinart editing and a glaring lack of kinetic continuity. But whenever this adrenaline-pumped drama gets off the track, well... let's just say it's a hybrid of Top Gun and Days of Thunder, but makes those Tom Cruise vehicles look masterful by comparison. Stallone's a retired Grand Prix champion, called back into action by his disabled crew chief (Burt Reynolds) to boost the career of a hotshot driver (Kip Pardue, the pretty-boy from Remember the Titans) who's trailing a German ace (charismatic Til Schweiger) in the current 20-race season. The female contingent consists of a reporter (Stacy Edwards, too talented for this tripe) who's writing about "male domination in sports"; Stallone's embittered, remarried ex-wife (Gina Gershon, parodying her bitchy persona); and the requisite kewpie doll (Estella Warren) who comes between Boy Wonder and the reigning champ. It's airhead melodrama all the way, so you'd better enjoy the breakneck racing scenes--including a ludicrous prototype-racer joyride through downtown Chicago--or you'll blow a piston on your straightaway sprint to the bad-movie finish line. --Jeff Shannon |

The Bachelor List Price: $9.98 Sale Price: $1.47 |
|
The Bachelor got critically slammed when it played in theaters, probably because reviewers couldn't help comparing it with the movie on which it's based, the brilliant Buster Keaton comedy Seven Chances. But on its own terms, The Bachelor is a modest and enjoyable picture about Jimmie (Chris O'Donnell), a happily single young man who suddenly gets an ultimatum from his grandfather's will: marry by his 30th birthday or lose an inheritance of $100 million. This is revealed the day before that very birthday. Unfortunately, Jimmie had already proposed to his girlfriend Anne (Renee Zellweger) and been turned down; she can see in his eyes that he isn't ready to get married and refuses to accept him until he is. So Jimmie needs to find a bride--fast. Though the commitment-shy man is a hoary cliché, The Bachelor successfully exaggerates Jimmie's fears to comic proportions. O'Donnell is his usual affable self, but it's Zellweger who seizes every scene she's in and makes something really enjoyable out it. The movie's greatest weakness is that she's such a small part of the second half. Still, there's good supporting performances from Hal Holbrook, Ed Asner, James Cromwell, and Marley Shelton (as Zellweger's sister), and Peter Ustinov and Brooke Shields both have very funny scenes. The Bachelor skirts some dangerously chauvinistic territory at times, but by and large it's a pleasant comedy with some genuine good humor. --Bret Fetzer Being a bachelor can really cost you. Just how much is what this bachelor is about to find out. Special features: original theatrical trailer cast and crew filmographies 5.1 digital audio widescreen and fullscreen versions of the film dvd-rom content: script to screen and original theatrical website. Studio: New Line Home Video Release Date: 02/03/2004 Starring: Chris Odonnell Renee Zellweger Run time: 102 minutes Rating: Pg13 Director: Gary Sinyor |

Cleopatra: A Life List Price: $16.99 Sale Price: $8.50 |
|
Her palace shimmered with onyx and gold but was richer still in political and sexual intrigue. Above all else, Cleopatra was a shrewd strategist and an ingenious negotiator. She was married twice, each time to a brother. She waged a brutal civil war against the first and poisoned the second; incest and assassination were family specialties. She had children by Julius Caesar and Mark Antony, two of the most prominent Romans of the day. With Antony she would attempt to forge a new empire, in an alliance that spelled both their ends. Famous long before she was notorious, Cleopatra has gone down in history for all the wrong reasons. Her supple personality and the drama of her circumstances have been lost. In a masterly return to the classical sources, Stacy Schiff boldly separates fact from fiction to rescue the magnetic queen whose death ushered in a new world order. |

Too often, people think learning to build websites is hard. They leave that to the 15 year olds or the professional designers.
Well, I'm not here to say that it's a cake walk. But I do believe that there is value in the small business person learning to build websites for their own company.
There is an initial investment of time and a learning curve. But once you have a handle on how you can market your small business on the web, your business will explode.
What are the main vehicles you use to generate clients? The phone book? Television commercials? The newspaper?
Unfortunately, all of these methods have become increasingly less effective as a direct result of the internet's penetration into our lives. People now spend an average of 49 percent of their free time online. Advertising mediums that reached people just 10 years ago are completely ignored today.
And, this is actually good for you!
Why is it good? It's good because most small businesspeople have not figured out how to make the internet work for them. They throw up "brochure" sites because they've heard they need an online presence. But their sites aren't generating any business for them.
So, if you go about learning how to build websites - and really take the time to understand how the web works - you have a powerful advertising tool for your business.
It will require time. But not as much as you might suppose. If you did everything yourself from scratch, it would be a nearly impossible task.
Fortunately, there are packages that come with "training wheels" for small business people. No, you won't have a mega-selling first class website in 30 minutes. You know better than that. But with a moderate investment of time, you will understand what really motivates your customer and be able to build a professional website that starts generating traffic - and customers - quickly.
Learning to build websites is a skill worth developing for small businesspeople. In fact, the small business successes of tomorrow are found in those learning to build websites today.
Stacy Fox has developed a successful local small business website for her husband, a divorce attorney. She'd like to share with you how she did it on her Small Business Website Marketing blog
The Prime Time Reality for Deal or No Deal Models
Decades ago, when shows like "Quiz Show" dominated the airwaves, getting on a game show took a stroke of luck and real brains. Decades later, while shows like Jeopardy see modest success, it is a new wave of game shows such as "Are You Smarter Than A 5th Grader", "1 vs. 100", "Power of 10" and most recently the Mega-Hit Deal or No Deal that lead the pack. Many may ask themselves how it is that a show featuring average contestants opening cases for money has grown to be the number one show in America?
It is in fact Deal or No Deal that will exist long after the legions of competitors have been forgotten. Consumers must take a step back and ask: "Why is it that we are so enthralled with this simple show?". The answer is simpler than you might think, sex appeal, humor and the chance for a quick buck. In fact, it is this unique combination of sex, money and the undying wit of our favorite bald man that has been responsible for three record seasons and the trend does not have any indication of slowing down.
Aside from Howie and promise of a quick buck for some of America's most interesting contestants, the Deal or No Deal models are attributable for a great deal of the shows' success. The series producers have done a great job of continually selecting models to satisfy the needs of the wide range of viewers. In season 3, the series features a model to satisfy the needs of those originating from every corner of the world:
• Anya Monzikova representing eastern Europeans
• Tameka Jacobs & Alike Boggan representing African Americans
• Mylinda Tov representing Chinese and Western Europeans
• Leyla Milani representing Middle Easterners
• Lisa Gleave representing Australians
• Liana Grethel representing Latin Americans
• Aubrie Lemon representing red blooded Americans with an inexplicable fascination for blondes
Even the Hawaiians have someone to root for in the like of their native Megan Abrigo! This unique approach to casting models helps to create a global community of models and give the show widespread appeal across many ethnic groups.
The models themselves are clearly the shows greatest asset and contrary to common belief are more than just pretty faces. In fact, Laura Shields and Aubrie Lemon are both qualified to be in MENSA having IQs over 132 (The Average American's IQ is 98). In addition, the majority of the Deal or No Deal models all have a four year degree with many having advanced degrees. There is even a lawyer in the house in the form of Stacy Gardener. It is important to remember that each model possesses unique talents and skills beyond just the ability to look great on stage.
In fact, offstage these models are doing a great deal to benefit society around them. When Katie Cleary is not busy with work, she is out helping animals through her participation in local humane societies. In her downtime, Tameka Jacob remains humble and focused on helping young girls in foster homes and adoption agencies. Aubrie Lemon is an active participant in the National Geographic Society and works to help local animals by participating in a series of events for the Los Angeles Zoo.
As much as the models do for the show, the show has done a great job of promoting many of the shows models careers into the stratosphere. These days, a season briefcase job guarantees the Deal or No Deal Models covers on Maxim, appearances on Oprah and a variety of other side gigs.
It's a brave new world for the Deal or No Deal Models, are they ready for it? Visit http://www.dealornodealmodels.net and learn for yourself
