Singer-songwriter Kip Moore explored his own experiences of growing up in a small Georgia town and working diligently for years to achieve his musical dreams to create his MCA Nashville debut album, Up All Night. The album poetically captures those unforgettable coming-of-age moments, especially for those longing for a life beyond a small town's borders, as well as the roller coaster of love and heartbreak at any age. He delivers these honest and deeply personal lyrics with a gravelly voice weathered by life's detours and disappointments and strengthened by his dreams and unyielding determination. Up All Night, which includes the hit "Somethin' `Bout a Truck," is infused with relentless intensity, both of passion and frustration, that is earning rave reviews from critics.

For those of us who grew up in the '70s, this drive-in compilation of '50s and '60s rock and doo-wop, complete with Wolfman Jack introductions, was our introduction to this music. There are 41 jukebox hits here, and every one of them is a classic of its time (although two tracks--"At the Hop" and "She's so Fine" are covers by the revival band Flash Cadillac & the Continental Kids). In his 1973 movie, director George Lucas used the music (and the presence of mysterious deejay Wolfman) as the AM-radio soundtrack to one night in suburban California, 1962. The idea was to capture and sustain an end-of-summer, end-of-innocence mood that's in the air throughout the picture-- not as a shortcut to establishing a period (as in Robert Zemeckis'Forrest Gump). There's an awful lot of spontaneous energy in these tunes--from Chuck Berry and Buddy Holly, to the Platters and the Clovers and the Del-Vikings, to the Crests and the Beach Boys--and also just a hint of melancholy that goes down very nicely with a burger, shake, and fries. --Jim Emerson

Brokeback Mountain [Blu-ray] Brokeback Mountain [Blu-ray]
List Price: $19.98
Sale Price: $6.75

A sad, melancholy ache pervades Brokeback Mountain, Ang Lee's haunting, moving film that, like his other movies, explores societal constraints and the passions that lurk underneath. This time, however, instead of taking on ancient China, 19th-century England, or '70s suburbia, Lee uses the tableau of the American West in the early '60s to show how two lovers are bound by their expected roles, how they rebel against them, and the repercussions for each of doing so--but the romance here is between two men. Ennis Del Mar (Heath Ledger) and Jack Twist (Jake Gyllenhaal) are two itinerant ranchers looking for work in Wyoming when they meet and embark on a summer sheepherding job in the shadow of titular Brokeback Mountain. The taciturn Ennis, uncommunicative in the extreme, finds himself opening up around the gregarious Jack, and the two form a bond that surprisingly catches fire one cold night out in the wilderness. Separating at the end of the summer, each goes on to marry and have children, but a reunion years later proves that, if anything, their passion for each other has grown significantly. And while Jack harbors dreams of a life together, the tight-lipped Ennis is unable to bring himself to even consider something so revolutionary. Its open, unforced depiction of love between two men made Brokeback an instant cultural touchstone, for both good and bad, as it was tagged derisively as the "gay cowboy movie," but also heralded as a breakthrough for mainstream cinema. Amidst all the hoopla of various agendas, though, was a quiet, heartbreaking love story that was both of its time and universal--it was the quintessential tale of star-crossed lovers, but grounded in an ever-changing America that promised both hope and despair. Adapted by Larry McMurtry and Diana Ossana from Annie Proulx's short story, the movie echoes the sparse bleakness of McMurtry's The Last Picture Show with its fading of the once-glorious West; but with Lee at the helm, it also resembles The Ice Storm, as it showed the ripple effects of a singular event over a number of people. As always, Lee's work with actors is unparalleled, as he elicits graceful, nuanced performances from Michelle Williams and Anne Hathaway as the wives affected overtly and subliminally by their husbands' affair, and Gyllenhaal brings surprising dimensions to a character that could have easily just been a puppy dog of a boy. It's Ledger, however, who's the breakthrough in the film, and his portrait of an emotionally repressed man both undone and liberated by his feelings is mesmerizing and devastating. Spare in style but rich with emotion, Brokeback Mountain earns its place as a classic modern love story. --Mark Englehart

Ennis Del Mar (Heath Ledger) spends the summer of 1963 sheepherding in the beautiful wilderness of Wyoming's Brokeback Mountain, partnering with rodeo cowboy Jack Twist (Jake Gyllenhaal). The two men form a powerful bond they are compelled to hide from their families and from a society unprepared to accept their enduring connection. Director Ang lee's acclaimed, emotional drama also stars Michelle Williams, Anne Hathaway, Randy Quaid. 135 min. Widescreen; Soundtracks: English DTS HD 5.1 Master Audio, French DTS 5.1, Spanish DTS 5.1; Subtitles: English (SDH), French, Spanish; featurettes; interviews.

Double Indemnity (Gene Shalit's Critic's Choice Edition) Double Indemnity (Gene Shalit's Critic's Choice Edition)
Sale Price: $7.10

From the moment they met, it was murder. When an insurance man with commission on his mind meets a suburban blond with murder in her heart, it's lust at first sight. Barbara Stanwyck and Fred MacMurray conspire to trick her husband into signing a policy that pays double for accidental death-then push him from a train without leaving tracks. It's a perfect crime until their claim goes to Edward G. Robinson, an insurance investigator who puts a premium on not being swindled. He won't be railroaded into paying until he's sure. And he's a long way from sure. It's all too neat. Too perfect. Something troubles him. He becomes obsessed with the case, trying to find the flaw, stalking the couple, waiting for just one slip. Director Billy Wilder wrote the script with Raymond Chandler from James M. Cain's whiplash novel, and Ms. Stanwyck won an Academy Award nomination. Double Indemnity is a movie so malicious, so satisfying, that it has become one of Hollywood's all-time best suspense thrillers.

Earthworm Jim 3D Earthworm Jim 3D
List Price: $67.99
Sale Price: $90.98

The world's favorite spineless superhero returns in a 3-D adventure that, at first glance, appears to be a worthy successor to the original 16-bit version of this classic action arcade game. However, there's no squirming past the squeamish truth of Earthworm Jim 3D--this game suffers from the dreaded bad camera angle syndrome. EWJ could have been a sleeper hit, but unless you have a strong tolerance for frustration, it's recommended that you avoid this one. A trademark feature of all EWJ games is the title character's ongoing (and highly unfortunate) collision with cows--and this adventure is no different. The wiggly worm gets smacked in the cranium with a certain bovine and ends up in a cow-induced coma. So, the game takes place within Jim's mind, where he must collect his marbles in order to awaken again. Despite having decently colored (but far from spectacular) graphics and a surprisingly cool soundtrack, EWJ is often unplayable. In a fully 3-D game that features so much running, jumping, and searching for goodies, a good view of the action is most important. But here, you'll spend way too much time attempting to manually adjust the camera. This, of course, is never any fun. And even if you decide to risk your sanity and play, you'll find a game that really doesn't improve on the 3-D gameplay standards of the N64 classic Super Mario World. With a bit more work, this could've been at least marginally interesting. As it is, EWJ is better off buried underground with the other worms. --Mark Brooks Pros: Decent graphics that are brightly colored Odd mishmash of music styles that fits the wackiness of the gaming world Cons: Simply horrendous camera that requires too much manual input to be of any use Uninspired gameplay gives EWJ a rather tired feeling Possibility of a sequel has us terrified

List Price: $34.98

In this enthralling actioner, Liam Neeson stars as a distraught widower haunted by his past who takes a job as a huntsman in the Alaskan wilderness. When the plane he and a bunch of hardened oil rig workers are travelling on crashes, they all find themselves stranded in the middle of nowhere. Now, the men must fight the elements, starvation, each other, and a deadly pack of wolves as they struggle to survive. With Dallas Roberts, Frank Grillo, Dermot Mulroney. 118 min. Widescreen (Enhanced); Soundtracks: English DTS HD 5.1 Master Audio, Dolby Digital 5.1; Subtitles: English (SDH), French, Spanish. Also includes a DVD version of the film. Two-disc set.

The plane crashes (boy, does it crash) in the remote Alaskan nowhere, and the rough-and-tumble oil wildcatters who survive must fight their way to safety. That in itself might be enough from which The Grey could fashion a suspenseful thrill-ride, but the movie has one more ace up its sleeve. Wolves! A pack of them, starving and considerably irritated that these outsiders have blundered into their territory. And while it is true that most real-world wolves are hardly man-eaters, director Joe Carnahan and cowriter Ian Mackenzie Jeffers are really not all that interested in reality. Despite some hair-raising moments and a healthy spattering of gore, The Grey is an existential action picture, and the wolves function only as all-purpose predator (being computer-generated, they never really look real anyway). What's really at stake are the souls of these men--how they get along together, and how they face death. Yes, there is always something faintly absurd hanging around this movie; it's like a Jack London story adapted by Luc Besson. But out of its pulpy mash, Carnahan extracts something gutsy. It certainly helps that he's got the mighty Liam Neeson on board as the most capable of the survivors; Neeson exudes the kind of authority that the average action hero can only play-act. Dallas Roberts and Dermot Mulroney add color, and Frank Grillo jumps off the screen as the most belligerent of the desperate crew. It's possible for a movie to have an absurd premise yet carve something unexpectedly philosophical out of that: The Incredible Shrinking Man and Rise of the Planet of the Apes come to mind. Add this one to that oddball list. --Robert Horton

Remember the early 1980s. It was the introduction in many schools of the BBC B computer. Wow, it was certainly impressive but it now seems so dated. I recall the teacher at the time asking us to imagine what we thought the classroom of twenty years time from then would look like. The class came to a general conclusion that teachers would be replaced by a BBC B computer wheeled into teach each lesson. I certainly liked this idea as at least the computer would never give detentions.

Our idea of computers taking classes seems wildly out but actually looking closely we were not too far away. You see, classes today continue to be taught by 'real people' but look at the effect that computers have made in helping people to learn. For those non-academics twenty or more years ago would surely have benefited from the internet, where they could learn at their own speed.

Webstreaming

Webstreaming, video podcasts, the internet have all come into education today but exactly where will technology take us say in twenty years time? Who knows but I what I do know is that schools can now set up their own virtual schools. I'm not talking about the website 2nd Life here, I'm talking about each school having its own tv channel on the web. This could be the place where lessons as videos and video podcasts could be delivered through one dedicated tv URL channel. You think that webstreaming would make a TV URL channel too slow? Well actually no. The fact is that a channel is very easy to set up one and can be updated by teachers in real time.

For teachers using this new technology lessons could be recorded, either in video or audio format, and placed on one of these channel. It means that those children who are not too fast at picking up information in a traditional education way, could be going back to the lesson and watching it again in their own time. Webstreaming and video podcasts are great but now it's time for educators to sit down and seriously consider this latest internet technology with its many benefits.

Timothy Mitchell is a Director at RedRok Media, which is pioneering TV URL channels in schools and colleges.

Yoga: Yoga Videos Aren't All Equal at Getting Out the Kinks

Yoga used to be the kind of thing someone's eccentric aunt did - a woman with a braid wrapped around her head who entertained the children by putting her foot behind her neck.

I tried screening three different videos on a day when my neck and shoulder muscles were tighter than last year's jeans. I had knots the size of Rhode Island that had been there for weeks.

Jane Fonda's Yoga Exercise (A.Vision) relaxed them. Kathy Smith's New Yoga (BodyVision) warmed them up. Three hours later, after falling under the reassuring southern spell of actress Dixie Carter's Unworkout (MCA Universal), they melted away.

Here's how it went:

An all-natural Jane Fonda appeared on a set that looks like a craggy moonscape, wearing plain red leotards and tights, and sporting a French braid down to her hips. (It's a hair extension, but what do we care.)

She demonstrated the classical Sun Salutation, a choreographed yoga routine traditionally used to greet the day, her huge Ted Turner diamond gleaming in the spotlight.

Then she asked us to join her in a warm-up, several rounds of the Sun Salutation, and a relaxation and breath awareness segment, 60 minutes all told.

Yoga is slow, I decided, slow enough that I have time to examine the webs between my toes and the lint on the carpet while holding each pose. While nearly standing on my head, I meditated on the most profound of Jane's statements: When in doubt, breathe.

After the relaxation segment, my thoughts switched to her final message: I am relaxed, and I will carry this feeling with me.

She said this hour would help me stretch, tone and energize my body. At that moment I felt lethargic, noodled, ready for lunch. The knots are still there.

Kathy Smith also appeared in a red leotard and tights and urged me to do the workout on an empty stomach, preferably just before dinner. She worked with Rod Stryker, yoga instructor of the stars, to update the ancient disciplines and merge them into a workout for fitness fans.

Kathy stood on a raised pylon as she led a more athletic version of the Sun Salutation, a half dozen other poses and a meditation, 60 minutes total.

The great thing about yoga, I'm learning, is the great names attached to each exercise: the downward dog, the cobra, the plank.

Trying to find a song from the movie Duel?

Like the title says, I'm trying to find an old song that was used in the movie Duel. Only bits and pieces of it can be heard during the first chase scene, and I'd like to hear the whole thing. The only information I have about it is from IMDb, and it says:
"Brush Those Tears From Your Eyes"
Written by Al Trace, Oakley Haldeman and James Lee
Published by MCA Music (ASCAP)
I've searched the title, and what I've heard in previews sounds nothing like what I'm looking for. There's a video on youtube and the song can be heard best in the first 30 seconds, and then again at 1:25, so the link I'm posting is to a clip from Duel.

Please help!
I have the movie on DVD, and there is no mention of it in the credits. The only reason I know the song name is from IMDb, it was the only song used in the movie. Thanks, though!

Get a copy of the movie and search in the music credits at the end of the movie to see what other songs were used.
