Cirque du Soleil - Varekai Cirque du Soleil - Varekai
List Price: $19.99
Sale Price: $12.04

Lavish "Cirque du Soleil" presentation about a mystical realm located at the top of a volcano, and the young man whose wanderlust leads him on an epic adventure into the unknown. 112 min. Widescreen; Soundtracks: English Dolby Digital 5.1, DTS; Subtitles: English, French, Spanish, Japanese; "making of" documentary; multiple angles; interviews; more.

Even by the high standards of Cirque du Soleil, Varekai is outstanding. While this artsy circus often aspires to weave a narrative through its spectacular events, in Varekai that story (about a winged boy who falls to earth and falls in love with a caterpillar girl) is as delightful and engaging as the acrobatic feats--which is saying a lot, because these feats will leave you agog. Acrobats juggle each others' bodies with their legs; identical twins spin on aerial straps; a contortionist twists into uncanny pretzel shapes; and much, much more. The elaborate costumes truly do evoke an otherworldly place--one of the clown characters looks like a man's torso emerging from the mouth of a carnivorous plant. Exceptionally well-filmed, and featuring a wealth of extra features about the making of the show, Varekai is Cirque du Soleil at the peak of its powers: Dizzy, dazzling, and sexy. --Bret Fetzer

Fairy Tale - A True Story Fairy Tale - A True Story
List Price: $8.99
Sale Price: $3.61

In the English countryside of 1917, two schoolgirls' claim to have photographs of fairies that inhabit the woods near their home makes the youngsters instant celebrities and stirs an international debate with opponents as diverse as believer Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and skeptic Harry Houdini. This fanciful spin on a true incident stars Florence Hoath, Elizabeth Earl, and Paul McGann, with Peter O'Toole as Doyle and Harvey Keitel as Houdini. 97 min. Widescreen (Enhanced); Soundtracks: English Dolby Digital 5.1, Dolby Digital Surround, French Dolby Digital Surround; Subtitles: English.

When her father is declared missing in action during World War I, Elsie Wrigth (Florence Hoath) goes to live in England with her cousin Frances Griffiths (Elizabeth Earl) for whom the topic of fairies is forbidden. Immediately, the girls discover the winged creatures in the garden and photograph them for Frances's startled parents. This leads to another kind of adventure for the girls. They become the toasts of London as Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (Peter O'Toole) and Harry Houdini (Harvey Keitel), who have seen the photographs, escort them around town. Mildly villainous reporters chase the girls and curious spectators invade their garden after the pictures are printed publicly. Although fairies are the visible subjects, the enchanting video is really about faith. Frances's parents (Phoebe Nicholls and Paul McGann) recently lost their son, Joseph, who had originally discovered the fairies and would like to think he may be an angel. Sir Arthur also lost his son and is courted by clairvoyants who claim they can talk to the boy. Elsie waits patiently for her father to come home, although it appears hopeless that he will. Harry Houdini is an illusionist but acts against the fraudulent claims of greedy mediums and the like. They are all touched by a need to truly believe in what remains hidden. The story is very loosely based on an early 20th-century controversy involving the real Frances and Elsie who faked pictures of fairies similar to the ones in the video. The real girls never confessed, but the video suggests the manner in which the real life photos may have been produced. --Margaret Griffis

Kit Kittredge: An American Girl Kit Kittredge: An American Girl
List Price: $12.98
Sale Price: $4.45

Features include: •MPAA Rating: G•Format: DVD•Runtime: 101 minutes

A period piece set in the Great Depression and based on the extremely popular American Girl book series, Kit Kittredge is a moving and believable story about a smart 10-year-old girl whose family is profoundly affected by the Depression. May, 1934 finds Kit Kittredge (Abigail Breslin) living a very comfortable life in a nice home with her mother (Julia Ormond) and father (Chris O'Donnell) despite the Depression that is affecting many of her neighbors. When her father's auto dealership is taken back by the bank, Kit's father is forced to head for Chicago to look for work, leaving his family struggling to make ends meet by taking in borders. Kindhearted and generous by nature, Kit's nose for news and her aspirations of becoming a great reporter lead her to write a portrait of the boardinghouse run by her mother, essentially a kid's view of the Depression as well as an article about hobos that challenges many commonly held prejudices. Kit determinedly submits her articles to the local Cincinnati Register paper, regardless of the chief editor's stern ways and obvious lack of interest. When her own family and boarders become the victims of a crime, Kit's must utilize her investigative skills to solve the crime and exonerate her friend Will (Max Thieriot). Breslin's performance in this film is stellar--viewers can't help but believe that she is Kit Kittredge. The filmmakers' attention to detail ensures that everything from scenery props to music and dialogue seem completely authentic, and performances by Joan Cusack as the mobile librarian, Stanley Tucci as the traveling magician, Jane Krakowski as the desperate-for-love dance instructor, and Zach Mills as Kit's young friend, are all impressive. Serious American Girl fans, period film lovers, and viewers just looking for a good story will love this film. (Ages 3 and older) --Tami Horiuchi

Magician Picture

The most important part of being a professional magician is getting the show. When it comes to marketing for magicians, you cannot rely on word-of-mouth alone to bring in paying gigs. Many magicians still get it wrong and are left sitting at home waiting for the phone to ring. Below are some of the ways I use to market my shows, which I hope will help you too.

The tips below are designed to make you think a little bit outside the norm. Places like the yellow pages and newspaper ads have gone by the wayside over the past few years and the return on your advertising money has decreased dramatically. That is not to say you should completely disregard these avenues, but you need to add more and better outlets. The internet has opened up many opportunities.

1. Website: Plain and simple, more and more people are using the internet to search for products and commodities, including entertainers. You should have a website for your services. It does not have to be elaborate. In fact, a simple one- or two-page site is more than plenty. Include a picture of yourself and tell people why they should hire you. What benefits do you offer?

2. Social Media: This includes sites like Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, Delicious, StumbleUpon, Flickr, YouTube and so many more. Each of these sites can offer you more exposure and unique ways to advertise your services. A video on You Tube can garner 1000s of views from potential customers; an unusual photo of yourself on Flickr and a stimulating dialogue on Twitter, Facebook or My Space can all add to your profile and traffic.

3. Commercials: If you have never done any commercials, this is a fun way to get some extra work and also some great advertising. Think about how you could promote a product with magic and then approach the company with your idea. Local companies are better than national.

4. Store promotions: More and more businesses are looking for ways to get customers into their places. Live entertainment can draw a crowd, especially for family audiences. Putting on a show using the company products or doing close-up magic for visitors is not limited to restaurants. Think how you can help businesses with your magic and in return you will get good advertising.

5. Press releases: When you do get gigs for places that are open to the public, it is important that YOU contact the media. Put together an email list today with contacts for all the local papers, magazines, radio and TV stations. When you get your next big gig, send them a good press release. Do not rely on the client to do the press release. I have been featured in more local papers than I can remember, because I took the initiative to send out press releases.

6. Email signature: Another way to advertise is by always adding an email signature to all your email correspondence. Get a unique slogan, and whenever you email anyone, there is your small bit of advertising at the end. I have gotten many jobs using this method.

I really hope that you will try a few of these marketing ideas for magicians to bring in more work. I have done them all and can vouch for their success. The secret to getting constant work is to constantly work on your marketing.

Optical Illusion And Magic

Perhaps, optical illusion and magic are no different from each other for both share the same effects: they amaze and fascinate and deceive the human eye.

A suspecting audience will lose the chance of catching the trick if you are perfectly endowed with sleight of hand skill and interest.

Your eyes can be deceived both by magician's hand dexterity and apparent psychological persuasion (patter). The apparent patter of a magician combined with quicksilver hand skill is a perfect match to a dubious crowd.

Practical Optical Illusions

Optical illusions can be carried out in front of a large or medium size audience or can be performed using pictures especially if you have no immediate contact with the person you are trying to communicate with.

Pictures that visibly change their color or physically modifies along the way to keeping a long stare at them or by following simple rules or instruction helps you baffle your friends and amaze them of your ingenuity.

Optical Illusion is Magic

Magic is based on optical illusion because it involves the use of deceitful tricks that tends to help you perform the unnatural. Some of the most famous illusionists of time like Harry Houdini perform magic using a technique called Pepper's Ghost.

In Pepper's Ghost illusory technique, the use of glass fibers are perfectly positioned to create a hologram figure of the object you are trying to hide. Special effects and the use of black background are also critical to the performance of technique.

In the late 1800s, Harry Houdini first performed his major magic trick in front of a large audience by making an elephant disappear and making if appear again according to his own willing.

Since then, a lot of his contemporaries began making use of this type of strategy until it was patented in the late 1860.

Magic is a type of Illusion

You can hardly separate magic from optical illusion because the one is characteristic of the other. Magic involves the use of tricks that involve the quick hand and the use of colors and objects that seem to block the actual image of the main subject.

Specific productions (magic types) are achieved which shadows the image of the main object being given attention to.

For example, a glass of water that is apparently empty is actually lined with a clear material while the inside is stuff with material which you may show to your audience as a product of your magic (coins flowing from an empty bottle) when taken out.

It comes in a really REALLY old tin. I'm talking possibly a decade old tin. Chance are, you're not going to find the tin floating around anywhere for sell (at least not for less than, say, $50). However, you might be able to find it on eBay for not as much, or if you go to a Hobby Shop there's a good chance someone will have one that they don't value too high.
