Bill Cunningham New York

Sale Price: $16.49

New York Times readers could always count on photographer Bill Cunningham to provide vivid glimpses of trending fashions and high-society affairs by keeping up with his "On the Street" and "Evening Hours" columns. Now, longtime followers and new fans alike can learn all about Cunningham's long career and fascinating life through this affectionate documentary portrait of the man and his gift for framing our cultural currents. 84 min. Widescreen (Enhanced); Soundtrack: English Dolby Digital stereo; Subtitles: English (SDH); bonus footage; theatrical trailer.
Richard Press's flattering, but never fawning portrait of New York Times photographer Bill Cunningham distinguishes itself from most other art and fashion documentaries. First of all, Cunningham doesn't produce work that ends up on gallery walls. Instead, his candid snapshots of the city's most fashionable citizens have graced the paper's Style section for decades. That accessibility, however, doesn't make the octogenarian any less of an artist. Navigating New York with his humble Schwinn, clad in his blue canvas jacket, Cunningham doesn't miss a trick or a trend. In an era when anyone can take a digital photo and upload it to the Internet, he still shoots on film, and style mavens pour through his columns, "On the Street" and "Evening Hours," to see what's hip and whether or not they made the cut. For all his talent, though, Cunningham, a devout Catholic, eschews free drinks and other perks, and has lived in the same humble Carnegie Hall studio for 50 years. Press injects some suspense into the scenario when circumstances force Cunningham out of this rent-controlled paradise. Fortunately, a solution will be forthcoming. Along the way, Bonfire of the Vanities author Tom Wolfe, Vogue editor Anna Wintour (star of the equally fine September Issue), and other observers offer their thoughts, though Press always returns to Cunningham, whose joie de vivre will surely prove irresistible even to those who normally couldn't care less about cameras and clothes. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

The September Issue
List Price: $14.98
Sale Price: $7.24

Managing any successful magazine--let alone the renowned Vogue's mammoth annual September issue--requires taste, talent, and conviction. This behind-the-scenes documentary profiles Vogue editor-in-chief (and fashion guru) Anna Wintour as she embarks on a whirlwind mission to root out the very best from top clothing designers, oversee elaborate photo shoots, and assemble the hugely influential publication. 90 min. Widescreen (Enhanced); Soundtracks: English Dolby Digital 5.1, Dolby Digital stereo; Subtitles: English, Spanish; audio commentary; bonus footage; deleted scenes; photo gallery; theatrical trailer. Two-disc set.
Fashionistas finally get a glimpse of the mastermind behind the lion's share of the American fashion industry, Anna Wintour, editor of Vogue, in the dishy documentary The September Issue. The title refers to the fattest monthly edition of the fashion bible, and the sheer creative and financial efforts it takes to stage and publish it--not unlike a full feature film pressed inside glossy printed pages.Wintour, often thought to be the inspiration for the Meryl Streep character in The Devil Wears Prada, is revealed by director R.J. Cutler (producer of The War Room) to be both more open and human than her carefully cultivated persona, but still guarded and tough to read. There's less focus on any possible megalomania on the part of Wintour--perhaps that's implied--and more on just what an endeavor it is to produce that issue of Vogue, its impact on the fashion world, and what kind of critter could work on such a narrow playing field, yet have her impact realized on such a vast scale. The September Issue shows the battle of wills that goes on behind the scenes of every aspect of fashion publishing--and sometimes it's not pretty. The ruthless Wintour, at Vogue for two decades, has an equally strong-minded inner circle, including most notably Vogue's creative director, Grace Coddington, a former model (like Wintour herself) who clashes often, and colorfully, with her frenemy and longtime colleague Wintour. The political maneuvering can seem exhausting to the viewer, but the dishy reality is just too delicious. "Fashion is not about looking back," says Wintour. "It's about looking forward." And as with the best documentaries about fashion, including Unzipped and Lagerfeld Confidential, The September Issue leaves the viewer with a renewed appreciation for the beauty, creativity and energy behind fashion--even if one is watching, happily, in jeans and a T-shirt. --A.T. National Geographic: Inside 9/11 (Commemorative Edition)
List Price: $34.93
Sale Price: $17.97
|
|
|
Originally airing on the National Geographic Channel, this powerful documentary presents a comprehensive overview of the horrific events of September 11, 2001. Along with first-hand accounts of those whose lives were touched by the tragedy, the program also examines the history of al Qaeda, as well as the ongoing efforts by the government to prevent future terrorist attacks. 3 1/2 hrs. on two discs. Standard; Soundtrack: English Dolby Digital stereo; bonus programs.
Of all the documentaries that deal with the horrible events of September 11, 2001, National Geographic's two-part, 3-1/2-hour program Inside 9/11 is the only one to trace the evolution of Osama bin Laden's reign of terror from its origins in the Soviet-Afghan war of the early 1980s to 9/11 and beyond. Presented as a comprehensive timeline that culminates in the hijacking of four passenger jets (including those that destroyed the twin towers of the World Trade Center in New York), the program incorporates news footage and archival photos, computer graphics, thoroughly researched documentation, and eyewitness interviews to build an epic chronology of Islamic fundamentalism, carried out by radical sects which, in bin Laden's own words, "love death" with a religious fervor that was largely dismissed, in the early stages of terrorist assembly, by American intelligence services. The stage is set for bin Laden's well-financed orchestration of al Qaeda activities, and Inside 9/11 reaches a factual fever pitch as it focuses on the major players (including 9/11 architect Khalil Shaikh Mohammed, hijacker pilots Mohamed Atta and Ziad Jarrah, and other "sleeper cell" terrorists) as the countdown to 9/11 continues. What emerges from this minute-by-minute account is, in the harsh light of history, a much-needed understanding of how 9/11 happened, the conditions that led to lapses in CIA and FBI cooperation, airport security, and the "holy war" that bin Laden had so effectively precipitated. Subsequent, post-9/11 suicide missions are also included in this expansive chronology, making it potently clear that the war on terror will continue, and in some respects has only just begun. --Jeff Shannon

Print campaign was created in black and white version with Eva in passionate rapture on the photographs. It is mentioned by the house CK that the video commercial tells the whole story, while print form of photographs can capture just one moment of passion. Fashion and lifestyle magazines will publish the commercial from September 2008. And what did Eva Mendes say about the perfume when she tried it? Ambraliquida (Liquid Amber Scented Body Oil)
List Price: $29.99

One hears the echo of a remote and ancient Byzantine atmosphere when the senses encounter the mysterious and secret fragrance that characterizes the products of the Ambraliquida Line by L'Erbolario. Slowly, it evokes a vision of the tapestry of red and gold leaves at the foot of the tall trees of Liquid Amber Orientalis found in a dense forest in Marmanis in Turkey. The extract from this noble tree enriches the formula for this line with the precious properties of antioxidants and antiradicals necessary to maintain skin tone as well as softness.
Featured in VOGUE Italy Magazine (September 2010). Here's what VOGUE says (translated):
Pamper your body after a hard day's work with Ambraliquida's velvety body oil, which will soothe your stressed skin and raise your spirits
While the warm fragrance of Ambraliquida revives the senses, its velvety oil is absorbed with a light massage because it is made of light and very effective skin-friendly ingredients such as emollient, nourishing pistachio oil; sesame oil, which has firming properties due to ingredients such as lecithin and phytosterols; softening, nourishing, and protective rice bran oil rich in Vitamin E and gamma oryzanol; the unsaponifiable fraction of olive oil that helps prevent premature wrinkles and sagging skin; the oily extract of liquidambar with toning properties, and the antioxidant, anti-aging Vitamin E from soybeans.

How To Break Into Magazine Writing
As a freelance success story, Linda Formichelli walks the talk. She's written for more than 120 magazines, including Woman's Day, Health, Writer's Digest, Redbook, Business Start-Ups, Fortune Small Business, and Family Circle. She's also the author of two books, The Renegade Writer: A Totally Unconventional Guide to Freelance Writing Success and The Renegade Writer's Query Letters That Rock.
So who better to go to for advice on breaking into magazines? Here are three "from the front" tips she gave me to pass along:
1. Frame your idea effectively. When an editor considers your idea, she'll think, "Why us? Why now?" You need to be able to explain why your idea is perfect for the magazine's readers; for example, I might end an idea pitch letter with something like, "Family Circle's readers are busy from dawn to dusk, but they want to stress less so they can enjoy their time with their families. My article '15 Surprising Ways to Bust Stress' won't disappoint them."
As for "Why now?" you need to be able to hook your idea into something that's going on right now, such as a news story, a new book, a statistic, or a trend. For example, I might write, "According to a September 2009 study by the Stress Institute, women are 45% more stressed now than they were a decade ago." (Okay, so I made that stat up! But for your pitch letter you will obviously dig up a real number.)
2. Help the editor envision your idea in the magazine. To do this, you can lead your pitch letter with the same paragraph you would write if you were writing the actual article, and then go on to give the editor a few examples and quotes that show how you plan to structure the article and the kind of information you'll share. You can also come up with a cover-worthy title, suggest sidebars, and even suggest a graphical treatment if you happen to have an idea for one.
3. You need to be fearless! Fear is the number one thing holding back new writers from breaking into magazines. Don't stall by thinking you can't send out your pitch letter until it's perfect. There's no such thing as perfect, so just give it your best shot and get that thing out the door! If you make a mistake, it's not the end of the world - I've sold article ideas with pitch letters that had a typo in the very first sentence! And you'll learn and get better as you go along. The important thing is to start.
