Merlin: The Complete First Season Merlin: The Complete First Season
List Price: $49.98
Sale Price: $16.65

All 13 episodes from the series's debut season--including "The Dragon's Call," "Lancelot," "Excalibur," "The Labyrinth of Gedref," and "Le Morte d'Arthur"--are featured in a five-disc set. 9 1/2 hrs. total. Widescreen (Enhanced); Soundtrack: English Dolby Digital stereo; Subtitles: English (SDH); audio commentary; featurettes; photo gallery; more. **13 episodes on 5 discs. 9 1/2 hrs.**

The creators of Merlin position their hero as the original Harry Potter: a headstrong young wizard with mixed feelings about--and sometimes outright hostility toward--the destiny that's been thrust upon him. Merlin is a reboot of Arthurian legend, starting when all the heroes and sorcerous folk were teenagers, bursting with hormones and wrestling with the powers-that-be, particularly Arthur's heavy-handed father, Uther Pendragon (Anthony Head, best known as Giles from Buffy the Vampire Slayer), a benevolent tyrant who's banished magic from Camelot. Merlin (Colin Morgan, an impish lad with prominent ears) comes to the kingdom with high hopes and innate magical powers. He's taken under the wing of the court physician, Gaius (Richard Wilson, One Foot in the Grave), but additionally becomes the servant of young Arthur (Bradley James), a handsome and talented fighter who's also a bully and a snob. Rounding out the main cast are Morgana (Katie McGrath), who will one day be Merlin's foe but is now Uther's ward, and Gwen (Angel Coulby), a.k.a. Guinevere, the woman who will one day be the center of a legendary love triangle--but who is now Morgana's maid. Clearly, Merlin wants to shake up any preconception about these stuffy old stories, presenting a multi-ethnic Camelot with contemporary language and attitudes. Despite all this, Merlin quickly becomes addictive. The dialogue and special effects can be cheesy (particularly when the CGI monsters have to interact with actors), but the cast is charming and the stories, while a tad formulaic, keep things moving. Morgan is appropriately dweeby (but also has killer cheekbones), James combines football-quarterback good looks with a hint of sensitivity, McGrath is luscious and impetuous, and Coulby has earthy spunk. The heavy lifting, acting-wise, is ably handled by Head and Wilson. The first season deftly explores the origins of the pillars of Arthurian mythos, from the sword Excalibur to a very dashing (but born of peasant stock) Lancelot to the mysterious birth of Arthur himself. Add to it all an imprisoned dragon, voiced by John Hurt (Alien, The Elephant Man) and prone to cryptic but sometimes helpful advice, and you have an engaging fantasy series. In addition to 13 episodes, there's an additional disk with making-of features and video diaries of the young cast gallivanting around France. --Bret Fetzer

Sex and the City: The Complete Second Season Sex and the City: The Complete Second Season
List Price: $24.98
Sale Price: $7.95

All 18 episodes from season two--including "Take Me Out to the Ballgame," "The Awful Truth," "Four Women and a Funeral," "The Man, The Myth, The Viagra," "Games People Play" and "Ex and the City"--are collected in a three-disc boxed set. 9 hrs. total. Standard; Soundtracks: English Dolby Digital Surround, Spanish Dolby Digital mono; Subtitles: English, French. **18 episodes on 3 discs. 9 hrs.**

A smart and savvy (albeit highly stylized) look at the single lives of four thirtysomething Manhattan women, Sex and the City: The Complete Second Season builds on the foundation of its first season with plot arcs that are both hilarious and heartfelt, taking the show from breakout hit to true pop-culture phenomenon. Relationship epiphanies coexist happily alongside farcical plots and zingy one-liners, resulting in emotionally satisfying episodes that feature the sharp kind of character-defining dialogue that seems to have disappeared from the rest of TV long ago. When last we left the NYC gals, Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker) had just broken up with a commitment-phobic Mr. Big (Chris Noth), but fans of Noth's seductive-yet-distant rake didn't have to wait long until he was back in the picture, as he and Carrie tried to make another go of it. Their relationship evolution, from reunion to second breakup, provides the core of the second season. The fittingly titled and keenly observed episode "Evolution" found Carrie trying to leave a few feminine belongings at Mr. Big's apartment with little success, charting the challenges and limits of intimacy. And the season's finale, "Ex and the City," was a melancholy goodbye for Carrie and Big that took its cue from The Way We Were. It wasn't all angst, though: among other adventures, Charlotte (Kristin Davis) puzzles over whether one of her beaus was "gay-straight" or "straight-gay"; Miranda (Cynthia Nixon) tries to date a guy who insists on having sex only in places where they might get caught; and Samantha (the exquisite Kim Cattrall) copes with dates who range from, um, not big enough to far too big--with numerous stops in between. Through it all, the four actresses cohered into a solid ensemble that played on their complex relationships among themselves as well as with men; in two short years, Parker and company became one of the best TV casts in over a decade. And to top it all off, the second season offers 18 episodes, six more than the first. Sometimes size really can make a difference! --Mark Englehart

WWII in HD [Blu-ray] WWII in HD [Blu-ray]
List Price: $39.95
Sale Price: $13.71

Both the glories and grim tragedies of war are captured as never before in this stunning History Channel production, which fuses newly discovered color footage with voice performances from a star-studded cast. The voices of LL Cool J, Steve Zahn, Ron Livingston, and Rob Lowe help shape the personal stories of 12 American soldiers whose diary entries provided vivid and unforgettable testimonies about the battlefields of World War II. Narrated by Gary Sinise. 7 3/4 hrs. total on two discs. Widescreen; Soundtrack: English Dolby Digital 5.1.

At first glance, the very concept of WWII in HD seems like an oxymoron. After all, isn't the footage from back then nothing more than grainy black-and-white newsreel? And really, how much definition can be added to film that was shot more than 60 years ago? The answers: no, and quite a lot, actually. The quality of much of what is seen in the course of these 10 episodes (each around 45 minutes long) is surprisingly good. Add to that the fact that most of it is in color (not colorized, but originally recorded in that medium, some at the behest of the United States government), and the result is nothing short of astonishing. It's not easy viewing; there are sequences that are shockingly graphic (vivid examples include the carnage on view after major battles and the shots of Japanese civilians on the Pacific island of Saipan hurling themselves off cliffs to avoid capture by American troops). But all of it has been put to good use in what is undoubtedly one of the most compelling accounts of World War II ever produced. Other documentaries have chronicled the same events seen here, from the earliest days of the war (when Hitler was overrunning Europe and the ill-prepared Americans were still years away from becoming involved), through Pearl Harbor, the major confrontations with the Japanese in the Pacific theater (like Guadalcanal, Tarawa, the Battle of the Philippine Sea, and the incomparably bloody Iwo Jima) and with the Germans in Europe and North Africa (the invasion of Tunisia, D-day, the Battle of the Bulge), and straight on to victory in Europe and finally the Japanese surrender after Hiroshima and Nagasaki. But what separates WWII in HD is the filmmakers' decision to view these events through the experiences of a dozen individuals who were actually there, including a couple of war correspondents (one of whom, Richard Tregaskis, was the author of the seminal Guadalcanal Diary); an Austrian immigrant who escaped the Nazis and almost immediately enlisted in the U.S. Army; a nurse with General George Patton's Third Army; an African-American pilot who was one of the famed Tuskegee Airmen; a Japanese-American medic who fought heroically while his family was held in an internment camp; and others from the rank and file. All of them are voiced by such actors as Rob Lowe, Amy Smart, Steve Zahn, Josh Lucas, and LL Cool J; and with Gary Sinise providing voice-over narration, the whole piece comes off as a dramatic film as much as a straight documentary (an effect also enhanced by some brilliantly creative juxtapositions of words, images, and music). Not all of these men and women made it through the war (those still alive also appear in on-camera interviews), but none could ever forget the horrors they witnessed, and while those of us who did not serve will never really comprehend the sacrifices they made, this remarkable program may be as close as we can get. --Sam GrahamStills from WWII in HD (Click for larger image)

The setting - Late 80s... The place - India... The technology - Computers... A school kid is first introduced to a Computer. He gets his first hands on the machine that fascinates him to no end! He stares at its TV-like monitor, he feels its keyboard... Welcome to the world of Computers opening its doors to the inquisitive kid...

I consider myself extremely privileged to have been part of that wonderful and endearing era of the advent of Computers in India. As a school kid, it was the first meeting I had with this magic machine called a Computer which, as it would turn out, was to be the beginning of an endearing friendship that would last a lifetime

Computers at that time were extremely sensitive gadgets. We had a large Computer Room in our school housing some 50 odd computers. As it were so vociferously exemplified to all of us that the Computer should be protected from moisture and any spec of dust, our computer room proudly stood tall fitted with 6 Air Conditioners at a time when owning an AC was an out-n-out luxury in itself. We were all required to take off our shoes and place them outside in a neat row before entering this sacred room.

The two basic forms of Computers that we had at that time were - An IBM PC and a BBC Computer. The CPU of the computer used to be a horizontally based box (more like a VCR) than the tower type CPUs that we have today. There used to be two slots to feed in your floppy drives into it - drive A and drive B which were depicted as A: and B: on the monitor. At the start, the floppies we used were the big 5 3/4th inch disks and it was much later that the 3.25 inch disks came into existence many years later. It used to be such an exciting prospect just putting in your floppy and locking the notch and have your computer booted up.

Thus, as we took our places on our Computers sharing one PC between two students, our teacher started with her usual rounds carrying a "Bootable Disk" in her hand and booting our PCs for us one at a time. Computers at that time had no hard disks:shock: - hard to imagine today, but its true! Astonishing as it sounds, the PC did actually boot from a floppy disk and did showed all of its glorious power working purely on its RAM and carrying out what it was instructed to do:) What we refer to today casually an OS today, was in those days referred to as the Disk Operating System (DOS) and in most cases was almost certain to be found on your question paper to be expanded into its full form.

The floppy box used to be such a treasure for all of us with each of us being proud to hold one and show it off. Verbatim, Amkette - two of the most popular brands that existed in those times were a hot property much sought after at the stationer's shops! You just wonder where those brands got lost in today's world:( With no technological advancements like today, that was a time much quieter and laid back, and hence, this new little tech thing came as a cool soothing shower to a deprived race of tech thirsty generation:) Costing anywhere between 30 to 40 Rupees, it was an addiction to collect floppies at that age. No wonder, we used to be proud of our floppy boxes as we are today of our mobiles! I remember once in those times when a magazine had brought in a free floppy disk in one of its issues, there was such a mad rush to grab copies of that mag amongst the school kids! I confess to have indulged in the same procuring at least 10 copies of that useless magazine. What times they were!

Ok, so back to my computer class of the 80s, the PC booted and all set to go, the next step was for the teacher to load BASIC Language to the computer from another one of her's "master floppies" - as we called them. Bingo! And we were ready to get on:D My friend was there waiting for me to play with it, to study with it and to talk to it. I was equally keen to do the same with my new found friend, and as is a prerequisite, I first need to learn its language:)

Well, do join me on my journey with computers in our subsequent issues of this series of "The Lost Technology". I hope you would have liked the experience with our first edition of the weekly series. So do wait for the next edition - same time, same place - and we promise the journey to be endearing and worth remembering!

Your Editorial Stock Collection, a Hidden Wealth

The first fifty years of editorial stock photography were lean years for photographers.

Few photographers imagined their photos were worth much more than the immediate compensation they received from a magazine, book publisher or assignment client.

In addition, to save filing space, many photographers threw out extra “baggage†of “outdated†images. Little did they realize they were tossing away a gold mine.

In the early days, some photographers had special agreements with their publishers or newspaper and magazine editors that ownership of the photos bought, could revert back to them (the photographers) after three years. In some cases it was a shorter period of time. (This was in the days before the revision of the Copyright Law decreed that copyright ownership now stays with the photographer. In its original form the Copyright Law transferred copyright to whoever bought a "use" right to a photo.)

Unfortunately, some photographers didn’t take advantage of this kind of agreement provision. They were busy with their other projects and went on to other things, as the photo industry matured. Their original photographs, lying dormant in files at book companies, newspapers, and magazines, were sometimes ushered out by a junior assistant or inexperienced clerk, to make room for contemporary work. What could have been an annuity for a photographer disappeared into the dumpster.

Of course, some organizations had the foresight, manpower, and funds to catalog and save everything. One example is TIME-LIFE. Their files of photos chronicle the life and times of America since 1936.

Several years ago, the then-director of the TIME-LIFE library, Beth Zarcone, gave me a tour of their collection. The count of images totals more than 21,000,000, and before Getty Images bought their archives, TIME-LIFE kept these photos in their climate-controlled library at the base of Rockefeller Center in New York. I saw youthful pictures of Muhammad Ali (13 books have been written about him in the last decade), Frank Sinatra, astronaut John Glenn, Eleanor Roosevelt, and countless others. These were pictures taken by long-gone photographers who never thought about the legacy they were creating.

Not long ago, I had a talk with Flip Schulke, famed photographer of the Martin Luther King, Jr. era, and the subsequent years of political unrest.

He said, “As a young photographer in the 60’s, I didn’t throw anything away. After all, I thought of my pictures as my kids. Who gives their kids away?†As a result, Flip has a deep selection of outtakes from his assignments and self-assignments.

“Today, I’m making more money from those pictures than I did back when I took them,†says Flip. His books and photos about Martin Luther King Jr. have brought in six figures. A recent sale to a major TV network for a TV special, netted $24,000 in one month.

He also is authoring a St. Martin’s Press book about Muhammad Ali. He is working with The University of Minnesota and Macalester College (where he graduated) in St. Paul MN on a CD-ROM featuring his photos of Dr. King.

“Stock photographers should realize that their editorial photos serve as a pension, an annuity, as you get older. When you’re an editorial stock photographer, everything becomes history,†he said.

Flip pointed out that many photographers might not have the funds to produce their own CD-ROM. One way of getting around this is to donate your collection (with limited copyright) to a university, college or museum that has the budget to edit and make the selection process, catalog the pictures, produce the CD-ROM and promote it. The institution and the photographer then share in the profits.

“Some schools, however, don’t always have the funds to follow through on the complete process. If they don’t, the pictures will sit around in a box, the same way they did at your studio. Choose carefully.â€

For present-day photographers, Flip warns that despite the convenience digital cameras offer to photographers and publishers, the process can backfire. For example, a city desk editor will take a card from a digital camera, choose only one or two shots from the photos on the card, say of a fire scene, and then hand the card back to the photographer. To utilize the disk space, the photographer may be inclined to erase the remaining pictures to start on a new assignment. This may save disk space, but it destroys the outtakes that might prove valuable to the photographer’s historical collection.

Flip Schulke warns that every photo has historical significance. “Hold on to your photos. They are your future social security.â€

Why RAID 6 stops working in 2019
Three years ago I warned that RAID 5 would stop working in 2009. Sure enough, no enterprise storage vendor now recommends RAID 5. Now it's RAID 6, which protects against 2 drive failures. But in 2019 even RAID 6 won't protect your data. Here's why. by Robin Harris
