With a majority of the songs on 10,000 Days clocking in well past the seven-minute mark, you wouldn't be entirely mistaken in thinking that the title of the album refers to how long it actually takes to make it through the whole thing. Two of the tracks--the sitar and tabla enhanced "10,000 Days (Wings Part 2)" and its suitably epic psych-rock sister "Rosetta Stoned"--even linger on for nearly a dozen leisurely minutes each. That's delightful news for the legion of Tool fans that have been waiting five years for the follow-up to 2001's Lateralus, which debuted at number one and sold 2.3 million copies in the United States. Singer Maynard James Keenan is back on mystical form after his hiatus with the politically slanted A Perfect Circle, sounding at once ethereal and eloquent as he calmly charges through the metal tempest of the opening track "Vicarious." The rest of the band, meanwhile, hits a series of high-flying moments with tracks such as "Jambi" and "The Pot." When Tool sounds as good as it does on these songs it's hard to get enough. Which makes it all the more baffling that a surprisingly large chunk of the disc is given over to mood-enhancing soundscapes like "Lost Keys" and "Vigniti Tres." It's no coincidence that Michael Bublé's new album starts with just his voice and some fingersnaps on "The Best Is Yet to Come," a song made famous by Frank Sinatra. The Canadian smoothie looks longingly towards early-'60s Vegas, an impression quickly reinforced when a boisterous horn section makes its grand entrance, about 20 seconds into the track. That Bublé means business is confirmed by the second cut, a fast-paced take on Henry Mancini's "It Had Better Be Tonight," and of course by the CD's very title, another song identified with Sinatra as his cockiest. There are just a few sidesteps from the retro formula that's served Bublé so well so far: a languid duet with Brazilian star Ivan Lins on the bossa "Wonderful Tonight," a gospel choir on "That's Life." Interestingly, Bublé co-wrote the best of those sidesteps, "Everything," a Norah Jones-esque number that alluringly harks back to sunny '70s pop. What made the original Toy Story so great, besides its significant achievement as the first-ever feature-length computer animated film, was its ability to instantly transport viewers into a magical world where it seemed completely plausible that toys were living, thinking beings who sprang to life the minute they were alone and wanted nothing more than to be loved and played with by their children. Toy Story 3 absolutely succeeds in the very same thing--adults and children alike, whether they've seen the original film or not, find themselves immediately immersed in a world in which Woody (Tom Hanks), Buzz Lightyear (Tim Allen), Jessie (Joan Cusack), Mr. and Mrs. Potato Head (Don Rickles and Estelle Harris), Ham (John Ratzenberger), Rex (Wallace Shawn), the aliens, and the rest of Andy's toys remain completely devoted to Andy (John Morris) even as he's getting ready to pack up and leave for college. Woody scoffs at the other toys' worries that they'll end up in the garbage, assuring them that they've earned a spot of honor in the attic, but when the toys are mistakenly donated to Sunnyside Daycare, Woody is the only toy whose devotion to Andy outweighs the promise of getting played with each and every day. Woody sets off toward home alone while the other toys settle in for some daycare fun, but things don't turn out quite as expected at the daycare thanks to the scheming, strawberry-scented old-timer bear Lots-o'-Huggin' (Ned Beatty). Eventually, Woody rejoins his friends and they all attempt a daring escape from the daycare, which could destroy them all. The pacing of the film is impeccable at this point, although the sense of peril may prove almost too intense for a few young viewers. Pixar's 3-D computer animation is top-notch as always and the voice talent in this film is tremendous, but in the end, it's Pixar's uncanny ability to combine drama, action, and humor in a way that irresistibly draws viewers into the world of the film that makes Toy Story 3 such great family entertainment. Though perhaps not as beloved as his Spenser novels, the series of books Robert B. Parker wrote about Jesse Stone, the depressed, alcoholic police chief of a small Massachusetts seaside town, earned him a similarly devoted following. CBS began adapting the novels as a vehicle for Tom Selleck in 2005, closely following Parker's formula and style, to the delight of many fans. Innocents Lost is the seventh in the intermittent TV-movie series (an eighth, Benefit of the Doubt, will appear in 2012) and the third that features an original Jesse Stone story (cowritten by Selleck) that is not directly based on a Parker novel. For those just being introduced to Jesse Stone, starting out well into the series with Innocents Lost may be slightly bewildering considering the many multiple plot threads that have carried through from the beginning. But the characters have a lot of depth from the get-go, especially Selleck's Stone, who we quickly discover has been forced out of his job as Paradise police chief and is not faring so well in the mental health department. Though the scenery of the fictional village is nothing but picturesque (Halifax, Nova Scotia, stands in for the rocky Atlantic fishing village of Paradise), the atmosphere is fairly gloomy throughout. Jesse is doing his best to continue his ascent from a depression and drinking problem that began years earlier after his divorce. But even though he's often quick with a quip and carries the charismatic appeal of Tom Selleck-ness wherever he goes, watching Innocents Lost is not the way to spend an evening if you're looking to cheer yourself up. Jesse is still friendly with his former cop colleagues (the excellent Kathy Baker and Kohl Sudduth), but not so much with the new chief, who's been installed primarily based on nepotism (his father-in-law is the president of the town council). He's also still doing some contract work for the Massachusetts State Police homicide squad and his pal Commander Healy (Stephen McHattie), is again palling around with the shady underworld boss Gino Fish (William Sadler), and is back talking to the grizzled psychotherapist Dr. Dix (William Devane). All these excellent supporting character actors add to the superb creative qualities of a story weaving two mysteries that Jesse becomes involved with: the suspicious death of a young girl he helped out a few years earlier, and the questionable guilt of a Boston murder suspect that Healy believes is being prosecuted in error. Jesse handily solves both cases, but the successes do not make him any happier. Neither does a casual affair with the gorgeous secretary of his pal and former nemesis Hasty Hathaway (Gloria Reuben and Saul Rubinek, both also first-rate). Even his loveable golden retriever Reggie can't snap him out of his depressive fog. There's not a lot of action, but there is a high level of dramatic integrity in the dialogue and character interaction that will make fans eager for more unpredictable exploits from Jesse Stone, both personally and professionally. --Ted Fry
