Toshiba Lithium-ion Akkus â a Major Breakthrough in the Field of Akkus
Toshiba Corporation, based in Tokyo is a leading producer of electronic goods. Apart from various electronic goods, Toshiba also offer akkus for its various consumer electronic goods such as camcorders, digital cameras, laptops, printers etc. Toshiba manufactures various types of Akkus such as manganese dry akkus, alkaline dry akkus, Nickel dry akkus, alkaline button akkus, silver oxide akkus, zinc air akkus, lithium akkus, thionyl chloride lithium akkus, etc. The latest in this series is Toshiba's lithium-ion akkus.
Toshiba’s newly developed lithium-ion akkus can recharge 80% of the akkus energy capacity in one minute; it is approximately 60 times faster than the typical lithium-ion akkus. This akkus is one of its kinds that can be charged in one minute. It is developed keeping in mind the automobile applications that require quick charging time and large cycle time. It has a capacity of 600mAh and measures 3.8mm thick, 62mm high and 35mm deep. It was demonstrated in hard disc music player for about 10 minutes by charging 5 milli watts in 5 seconds. This akkus is highly durable and shows less than 1 percent deterioration in capacity even after the 1,000 cycles of discharging and recharging. It employs a cobalt-based anode and a non-carbon material cathode in place of carbon material that is used for conventional lithium ion akkus, but Toshiba calls it a lithium ion akkus because the electric charge movement depends on lithium ion.
This Toshiba lithium-ion akkus has many features that are sufficient to make a wide impact on the electronic market. Some of its features are excellent recharge performance, it recharges up to 80% of full capacity in only a minute. Total recharge takes only a few more minutes. Small and light, the new akkus offers a high level of storage efficiency. It has long life cycle. The new akkus operates well in extremes of temperature. It discharges 80% of its capacity at minus 40 degrees centigrade, against 100% at an ambient temperature of 25 degrees centigrade, and loses only 5% of capacity at temperatures as high as 45 degrees centigrade after 1,000 cycles.
These characteristics assure the wide applicability of the akkus as a power source for products as diverse as hybrid vehicles and mobile phones. These akkus are eco-friendly and can quickly store energy produced by locomotives and automobiles. This speedy and highly effective recharge characteristic of the akkus will support CO2 reduction, as the akkus can save and re-use energy that was simply wasted before.
