Get ready for some seriously big hair. The Last Dragon--or, to call it by its full title, Berry Gordy's the Last Dragon--is a stunning example of 1980s camp cinema. One-name kung fu wonder Taimak plays Leroy Green, a.k.a. Bruce Leroy, a humble student of kung fu who has achieved the highest level of skill, but hasn't yet found his inner master. Wandering through the streets of New York in a Chinese peasant outfit, he accidentally becomes the protector of nightclub hostess/video jockey Laura Charles (played by former Prince protégé Vanity, who also costarred in the trash classic Action Jackson). She's being threatened by a height-challenged mobster who wants her to play his girlfriend's video (the girlfriend is something of a Cyndi Lauper look-alike, played by Broadway star Faith Prince). Meanwhile, a man who calls himself Sho'Nuff, the Shogun of Harlem, wants to kick Leroy's ass and prove himself the baddest kung fu master in town. Add to this Leroy's smart-mouthed brother Richie (who calls Leroy "the chocolate-covered yellow peril"), a dregs-of-Motown soundtrack (DeBarge is a high point), ninja battles, pseudo-Eastern philosophical babble, and a jaw-dropping club performance by Vanity, and you have a hilarious example of why we're all so very glad the '80s are over. Are legends static pieces of folklore that explain and celebrate the past, or are they constantly evolving stories with room for new heroes? Scooby-Doo and the gang are headed to Japan where Daphne is scheduled to take part in an invitation-only martial arts tournament and the rest of the gang is looking forward to some much-earned relaxation. In Japan, technology is quickly replacing long-held traditions, but the revered martial-arts academy stands for all that is traditional. Daphne is thrust into the martial-arts competition before she even realizes it's begun, but the contest is almost immediately interrupted by the appearance of the ghost of the Black Samurai who has mysteriously sprung to life in the Tokyo Museum of Cultural History. The ghost steals the legendary sword of fate and the revered Destiny Scroll and suddenly the gang finds themselves embroiled in a mystery that will take them from Japan to an isolated, cloud-cloaked island in the South Pacific. There Velma pits her computer skills and ability to control Japan's high-tech inventions against everything from robotic ninjas to Samurai ghosts while Shaggy and Scooby learn a lot about everything from geishas to becoming Samurai warriors. Riddles, origami, a temple full of booby-traps, legendary dragons, sword fights, and the requisite chase scenes, Scooby snacks, geeky Fred moments, and Daphne fashion crises add up to a mystery bursting with danger, suspense, and lots of the unexpected. In the end, true villains are revealed and a new chapter with an unexpected hero is added to an old legend. The bonus "Scooby-Doo Dojo" provides a brief history of martial arts, including a discussion of the philosophy behind the art and some basic instruction in several safe and simple martial-arts moves. The feature film Resurrection amps up the adventures of Afro Samurai, the Black warrior who debuted on Spike TV in 2007. Taciturn and deadly, Afro (voiced by Samuel L. Jackson) wanders through an anachronistic, post-apocalyptic world, accompanied by motor-mouth Ninja-Ninja (also Jackson). This time, his nemesis is not the maniacal Justice from the series, but Sio (Lucy Liu), an embittered beauty who hates Afro for nearly killing her brother Jinno. She has Professor Dharman (S. Scott Bullock) recreate Afro's father from a jawbone stolen from his grave, a scheme that leads to the ultimate Oedipal showdown. The original series was rendered primarily in brooding grays, accented by spatters of red blood; Resurrection uses brilliant blues, oranges, and reds to underscore the conflicts. Hiphop artist RZA contributes another eclectic, moody score. But the over-the-top action can't disguise that the icy, silent Afro is a very limited character: he lacks the humanity that redeems the equally deadly swordsman Kenshin Himura in Rurouni Kenshin. Resurrection is clearly intended as an installment in a ongoing franchise. Afro kills the warrior Shichigoro (Liam O'Brien) in front of Kotaro (Zachary Gordon), his adopted son. At the end of the film, Afro sees Kotaro clutching his father's sword, tells him, "Anytime you're ready," and walks into the distance. Although the many extras stress that Afro-Samurai: Resurrection was a Japanese-American co- production, the film is presented only in English.
