You can find some great deals on laboratory equipment if you know where to look but there are a few things you must watch for. What quality of glassware are you buying when you come upon a rock bottom price? Used glassware may break when it is heated and the quality of it varies with manufacturers and the grade of glass used. Many lower-priced glassware is of inferior grade and will not withstand the rigors that better glassware will. What will happen to the glass tubing if you bend it in a narrow flame of an ordinary laboratory burner?
It will probably kink. Doing work in a narrow flame requires practice and good right and left hand coordination to produce a even heating of the section of the glass while not getting the tubing out of line.
