Here's something you didn't know about Van Hunt: Randy Jackson is his manager. Which says a lot about the "American Idol" judge's prime-time panning of pitchy would-be Stevie Wonders-- mainly, that he knows what he's talking about. If there is still a neo-soul show to be stolen, Van Hunt, for sure, has made off with it: This sophomore effort, with well-spaced nods to Prince, Curtis Mayfield, and the Isley Brothers, is way weightier than anything Maxwell or D'Angelo ever attempted and every bit as stylish… maybe more so. But what's most surprising is the disc's depth. Van Hunt knows his way around a smooth seduction--look no further than track two, "If I Take You Home (Upon ...)," which earns an A in that category--but he also has a little something to contribute to the modern rock conversation (the Kravitz-esque "Ride, Ride, Ride"), and he won't duck associations with disco ("The Thrill of This Love"), either. Even '80s-revivalism, as demonstrated here by "At the End of a Slow Dance," doesn't prove too great a challenge. Tie it all up with a bow (or, this being Van Hunt, maybe an ascot) and you still get a solidly singular vision. Red Dust is the second of six movies Clark Gable and Jean Harlow made together. As usual, he plays a rugged man's man whose devilishly sexy good looks and deep-rooted gallantry make him irresistible to women; she, a tough, no-nonsense broad with a smart mouth, champagne hair, a body that won't quit, and a heart of mush. One look at Dennis and she falls, hard. Her incessant chatter drives him nuts--and out of sheer impudence she insists on calling him "Fred"--but she finally wears him down. "You talk too much, but you're a cute little trick at that," he grins, pulling her onto his lap as the camera cuts away... Then Dennis falls for Babs Willis (Mary Astor), the genteel wife of visiting surveyor Gary Willis (Gene Raymond). (The couple arrives at the dangerous, ramshackle camp with tennis rackets.) Babs can't help but succumb to Dennis's raw masculine power. Come the monsoons, he carries her in out of the rain. Their ensuing first kiss is one hot movie moment--and her a married woman! Of course this can't last: Gable and Harlow have to end up together. Dennis takes pity on Gary and abandons his plan to run away with Babs. Howard Hawks's 1962 adventure-comedy is basically the same, loosely plotted movie Hawks made over and over again for decades. A collection of professionals with a common goal--in this case, animal trapping in Tanganyika--forms a pocket community and holds each other to high standards in their work. It's like a fusing of Ghost, The Sixth Sense, and The Mothman Prophecies, a New Age melodrama in a sentimental key that works through a rather contrived mystic mystery to a glowing climax.
