Kohler shows you how to hack ancient hardware, and includes a primer for home-brewing classic software. Rather adapt today's equipment to run retro games? Kohler provides emulation techniques, complete with instructions for hacking a classic joystick that's compatible with a contemporary computer. This book also teaches readers to revive old machines for the original gaming experience: hook up an Apple II or a Commodore 64, for example, and play it like you played before.A video game journalist and author of Power Up: How Japanese Video Games Gave the World an Extra Life, Kohler has taught the history of video games at Tufts University. In Retro Gaming Hacks, he locates the convergence of classic games and contemporary software, revealing not only how to retrofit classic games for today's systems, but how to find the golden oldies hidden in contemporary programs as well. An arcade often refers to an entertainment establishment or an area within an amusement park that houses different coin-operated machines and video games. It is a popular hangout for many teenagers and young adults alike. However, there are still a number of adults who still enjoy a game or two when visiting arcades. The different types of arcade games include video games, pinball machines, shooting galleries, ball toss games, crane machines, dance and music games, and simulated games, among many others. Most, if not all, arcade games are coin, token or magnetic card operated, and you can get a prize immediately or collect tickets or points for redemption of various items depending on the number of tickets or points.
Arcade and video games' origins can be traced back in early 20th century and grew in popularity in the 1970s with machines built mostly by Japanese companies such as Atari. However, coin operated games can actually be traced back as early as 350 BC during the time of Alexander the Great. According to one story, there was a man who presented Alexander the Great a game that once you placed a coin in it, the players would be able to bring balls up and down to disappear in several holes as controlled by the players. The winner could get twice what was given as a bet. Another coin operated machine used as a game of chance and to win some money was a slot machine invented by a jester in 1108. It was described similarly to the slot machines we know today - put in a coin, operate the level and get a chance to double your money.
Subsequently, other coin operated games were invented and introduced to the public with intention of providing entertainment and multiple chances of winning more than they betted. The rise in producing different kinds and types of coin operated machines for entertainment started around the late 1800s but reached its highest peak, including other arcade and video games, in early 2000. However, from 2004 until pretty much today, there was a decline in arcade games with the rise in popularity of portable video game gadgets such as Play Station and PSP, Xbox, Wii, PCs, and even mobile phones, among many others.
Nevertheless, arcades in different parts of the country still have considerable following especially as part of amusement parks and inside shopping malls. Young kids and teenagers can still be seen hanging out in arcades to meet friends and to compete with others who have the same interest on playing arcade and video games. Nowadays, the most popular arcade and video games include Sega's Extreme Hunting 2 Tournament (video kit), JVL's Retro (countertop), Raw Thrills-Betson's Fast & Furious (video dedicated), Raw Thrills-Betson's Fast & Furious Super Bikes (video simulators), Stern Pinball's Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean (pinball game), Skee-Ball's Skee-Ball Too! (alley bowlers), Skee-Ball's Super Shot (sports games), Rainbow's Rainbow (cranes & rotaries), Betson's Sponge Bob Jellyfish (children's games), ICE's Deal or No Deal (novelty games), Family Fun Co.'s Football Fortune (coin drop), Benchmark's Wheel Deal (coin drop), Andamiro's Hammer (bopping/stomping games), and LAI Games' Stacker (prize vendors), among many others.

Classic Arcade Games Emulation On New Technology
You might wonder what an emulator is. Emulators allow your computer to act like a console system such as the Apple IIe or the Atari 2600, which are used to emulate the hardware of a variety of classic arcade games.
Are all classic arcade games emulated? No, but those games made before 1992 are. Not all systems are easy to emulate.
Why is there a need to emulate classic arcade games? There are three major reasons why:
1. Popularity - if the system is popular, even if it is classic, the more effort is pushed to emulate it.
2. Availability of the Information - if the system contains a lot of information, it will be easier to emulate. If a game has never been emulated before, it will require a lot of reverse engineering, which could at times be frustrating.
3. Technical Hurdles - the hardware limits restrictions that are hard to avoid. For example, it took quite some time before the Atari 7800 was emulated, due to the encryption algorithm which prohibited games from being loaded. In addition, newer systems may lack the absolute horsepower to have the game run at a playable, and faster speed.
Although emulators are difficult to run, especially if it is your first time, you must download an emulator and unzip it. If you are not familiar with the procedures, you must read the documentation carefully.
Emulators are compound pieces of software. Most emulators may not perfectly emulate the capability of the system it is trying to copy. The imperfections in some emulators may be minor, sometimes timing problems may occur. Some emulators won't run games at all, or worse have some display problems. Some emulators may be deficient in joystick support, sound, and other significant features.
In writing an emulator, you will undergo a difficult process which requires attaining the precise system information, and figuring out how to emulate it with the software code.
There are two different types of emulators. The first one is the single-system or the single-game emulator. Examples of these are an Atari 2600 emulator, NES emulator, and an Apple II emulator. These emulators can only emulate one kind of game or system. The second type of emulators is the multi-emulators. The best example of this is the Multi-Arcade Machine Emulator or the MAME. MAME can emulate hundreds of arcade games, although not all arcade games can run on the same kind of system. That is a huge generalization, but the reason multi-emulators require more resources compared to single system emulators, in most cases.
The start of emulation has opened a lot of opportunities for companies to take advantage of their resources. Why spend a lot of time reprogramming or porting the classic arcade games to a new console when you can easily write an upright emulator. Emulation is the solution to these problems, and gives the gamers an exact replica of the classic games they love and want to acquire.

Why do I get so mad when I lose a video game that I break things and when I win I'm so overly joyed?
You see I've been playing vidoe games since the Atari 2600 days and even then games like Defender and Baszerk drove me nuts so much that I began to break joysticks and hit myself. Over the years I've broken just about every game controller for just about ever game console. I've never once turned to professional help but I was hoping it was just something I would grow out of. Well I haven't. I'm 28 and I still break controllers and put wonderful little holes in my apartment's wall. Over the years I've probably broken at least $3000 in controllers. Its not hard to do given the fact that the Orginal NES controllers were about $20-$30 a piece and my Xbox 360's are $30-$60 depending on what type you get. I know it sounds as though I'm boasting but this is an element in my life that has always been a part of my life. My family would like it if I gave games up all together but I'm not sure my anger issues can be subdued so easily. Why can't I play for fun? Why do I take it so seriously?
You answered your own question within your question. You have anger issues. That is the reason. You need to get help. So many people have these issues and so many ignore them or feel it's not a problem. At least you recognize it. Put down the video games for a bit and lift weights or take up jogging or boxing to relieve your stress.
If you have the support of your family, go for anger counseling. Good luck to you!
