Australian Open Tennis: Red-hot Murray Ready to Break Through at Slam 19 Jan to 1 Feb
Seeing Andy Murray's name up with the stars is, to use a cliche, breath of fresh air. He is the current flavor of the month and seems to be the favorite to win this year's Australian Open which will take place from 19th Jan to 1st Feb.
Let's have a look at some of those that will be attending the tournament and how they may fare at it:
- Of course, any talk of tennis stars starts with Rafael Nadal, the current No.1 seed. I don't think his skills will be much challenged in the initial few rounds but so far as winning the event is concerned, I don't think he is in his usual tournament winning form.
- Roger Federer, despite being 2nd seed has more of a chance to win the tournament than his main opponent, Nadal. Triumphing at Melbourne will mean equaling Pete Sampras record of earning 4 titles at the Australian Open.
- The defending champion Novak Djokovic has had quite a busy season so far. What remains to be seen is whether so much tennis is going to do him more harm than good.
- Andy Murray is fast emerging as the most sought-after player of professional tennis. Although he didn't have a very good experience at last year's Australian Open (he couldn't progress beyond the first round) yet this year is a completely different story. His confidence level is at an all time high and so is his game as was well proven by his win in the Qatar Open. It won't surprise me if he wins here toot.
- Jo-Wilfried Tsonga is another player to watch out for. He zoomed his way into the finals in Australia, last year but could not win the title. However, he does not appear as the kind who would lick his wounds in resignation. He has the opportunity to get over his disappointment from last year and something tells me, he is going to make the most of it. One problem he has been battling with is injuries.
- French player Gilles Simon doesn't carry the promise to win a Grand Slam event though there is no denying the fact that he plays with an elegance few can match.
- 7th seed Andy Roddick has a good record playing in Australia and his new coach, Larry Stefanki, seems to have done him loads of good. I would love to see him pitted against Sam Querrey or Phil Kohlschreiber in the 3rd rounder. I don't see him progressing any further than that.
- A hectic schedule in Fall may just be the undoing of Juan Martin del Potro. He plays amazingly well on the hard court yet injuries and a languishing stamina could be impediments in his way.
- One of last years quarter finalist, James Blake may be another tough contender. I am hoping (and not without any justification) that he could really outplay qualifiers at least in his initial 2 matches. He better watch out for Ernest Gulbis though.
- Argentinian player, David Nalbandian, has become more of a nuisance to his opponents as compared to being a serious threat once.
These are the various tennis players and if I had to guess the Australian Open tennis results, this is perhaps what I would see as my safest predictions:
Daniel Nestor and Nenad Zimonjic will win the doubles. They were the winners last year and I see no reason why they shouldn't repeat their performance.
The semi finals may be between Federer and Djokovic, and Murray and Monfils with Federer and Murray going out into the finals.
I would definitely back up Murray as the champion.

I'm going to Buenos Aeres in Jan/Feb - are there any good places to go and cool off from the heat?
Basically, where can i go where i won't get toasted? Are there indoor/outdoor swimming pools, spas, cooler bars and cafes? Do things cool down in the evening much? Also are there any good excursions from the city where you can swim etc.?
Most major hotels have indoor and/or outdoor swimmingpools, where you can pay for the day to use them, even if you are not a guest at that hotel. There are some beach towns near Buenos Aires, like Mar del Plata, Pinamar, Carilo, etc., 4 hours drive from Buenos Aires or 45 min by plane.
Weather can be very unpredictable, but it is usually pretty hot in February and stay hot even at night.
