About the Author
Old question. "What are the ridges on the F and J buttons for?" Why didn't keyboard makers stick with indents?
I've been programming since the days of punch cards.
the IBM 3270 terminal, and specifically, keyboard, was the best ever.
the F & J keys were more deeply indented, so it was easy to tell when your fingers were in the wrong place.
the underlines used today work for some people, but not nearly as well.
at least not for me.
the tactile feedback was stronger on the 3270 than it is on keyboards today.
that made the indents more useful.
with the very limited key pressure on some keyboards, they wouldn't work as well.
however, the ridges are, for me at least, not as helpful.
it could be that if i'd started with them, and been accustomed to keeping my fingers on the bottom of the keys, so i could feel the ridges, i'd have less trouble.
i can tell you though, for simple data entry, i sure miss the 3270 keyboard.
(that's what happens when one gets old.)
They are on the home keys, if you touch type the index fingers of each hand are on the home keys (left hand F right hand J) they are the starting positions and returning postions so you don't have to look or break concentration when touchtyping from a sheet of draft. The index fingers stay on the home keys and reach out to the others so you build up typing strings, making typing faster.
oops stopped half way through..... continued......
Keys on old fashioned typewriters had to be struck in a different way, a sharp fast movement otherwise they did not make a mark on the ink tape. If it wasn't sharp enough several keys would be jammed. On new computer keyboards you use a soft touch, touchtypists found this really difficult at first and hammered the keyboard. The keys are nowhere near as deep as on manual or even electric typewriters. I suspect that the raised ridges are to compensate for lack of depth in the keys; a space saving device.
