This is a SUPER BASIC guide to home brewing. It is not meant to be an expert opinion of any sorts. Hopefully, if anyone is thinking of starting a home brewing operation this can help you get a better idea of what is needed. Best of Luck!
Home Brew Supplies:
- A home brew kit

First and Foremost:
The first step is going to be rinsing and sanitizing all of your brewing equipment. This is very important because it eliminates the growth of unwanted things in your beer. The best way to clean everything is to run it through the dishwasher. This will ensure that no groves are cut into your supplies which allow bacteria to grow. To sanitize the equipment I recommend getting a restaurant grade sanitizer. You can get it at any bar or restaurant supply store. This will ensure you will start with a clean slate.
The Brew Part
In this step you are going to want to follow the directions provided with your brew kit as some of the vary. Basically, you are going to want to steep your grains in a large pot with about three gallons of water for about half an hour. After that you are going to add your malt extract to the water and bring everything to a boil. This is the step where you will start adding in the Hops. If you add the hop early it will make a more bitter hoppy beer. Once you have the hops added you not have Wort. You are going to need to cool this off as quickly as possible. This is best achieved by putting the whole pot into a sink filled with ice. Once the wort is cooled you are not ready to pour it into your fermenter. When pouring it in remember that the yeast needs oxygen to ferment so splashing or agitating it a little will help out. Once the fermentation has begun it is time to remove the Hops from the wort. You can use a strainer to do this.
At this point you are going to want to add your yeast and about five gallons of water. Be sure to read the directions on the yeast and how to properly activate it. No you should be all set and in about a day you should notice the air lock bubbling. This is a sign that the yeast is alive and well.
There you go. I would recommend following the instructions with your kit the first time before you start deviating to create your own brews. Also, follow the bottling instructions very closely as it is a delicate process.
The last step is to pour and enjoy in your favorite frosty beer mug!

Where Can You Find Really Good Home Brewing Recipes?
It may surprise you to learn that even the best chefs or bakers in the world still need to follow recipes.
We all watch Bobby and Rachel and Mario and they make it look like they are just throwing the dishes together on the spot. But they've either learned the recipe from somewhere or they have made up on their own at an earlier time.
They may not have these things written down for them right now, but chances are they did at one time and have just committed them to memory.

You may reach the point one day when you can toss out all your recipes and work from your head, just like that fine chef or master baker, but for now, you need to start somewhere.
So, Where Can You Find Home Brewing Recipes?
The first place to look for home brewing recipes is online (Hey! You're already here!)
There is a wealth of websites that offer step-by-step instructions for every type of beer and every type of wine that one could possibly want to try to make at home. Many of these are very basic, designed for the started and small brewing kits.
But it's not at all hard to find home brewing recipes are exotic and tasty enough for the master. You can, of course, tweak them a bit to suit your taste (which is one of the best things about home brewing), but it's usually recommended that you try the recipe as is for the first time, in order to make sure it comes out properly.
In addition, most online home brewing recipes are offered by those who are passionate about brewing at home just like you and have tried and tested these recipes themselves. They may also be available for comments or questions. They will probably even welcome your input -- home brewers are a friendly group.
Home brewing recipes are usually found on websites that are privately maintained, meaning that it's someone just like you running the site from his or her home. They very often maintain forums and boards for those who've tried the recipes so that they can leave comments about it, or let others know how they've adjusted it in any fashion to produce a different taste or flavor.
How Will I Know a Recipe Will Work for Me?
You can usually tell if any of these home brewing recipes are going to work for you by reading through the ingredients and the reviews and paying attention to what others have to say about it. For instance, if the recipe calls for the addition of certain fruits, do you like the flavor of that fruit and sweeter beers? Or if they're home brewing recipes for darker and thicker beers, is that to your taste, or do you typically prefer the lighter ales?
You can also compare the new recipe to ones you have tried before.
By reading through the ingredients and reading others' comments about these home brewing recipes, you know you won't be wasting your time or your efforts in trying them out.

how will brewing a 6gallon batch of home brew with 5gallons of water affect the brew,more alcohol taste better?
I've been making some real good home brew but this time i used less water & more hops & plan to let it aged,after bottling,for at least 3months & maybe a year or longer.My brew has a smooth taste & aroma,but i would like to get the comments from some other brewers.
I have to disagree with the first answer. The poster is right in saying that the yeast will produce the same amount of alcohol with the same amount of sugar, but because you are using less water (if you START with 5 gallons your final batch will probably only be about 4-4.5 gallons because of what is lost in the boil), the resulting solution of alcohol, water, residual sugars, etc. will have a higher percentage of alcohol in it.
Think of it this way: if you have half a glass of beer, and then fill the glass with water, the resulting solution will have the same amount of alcohol in it, but will have a much lower percentage of alcohol simply because of the added water.
As for aging, the slightly higher gravity and added hops will both contribute to a beer that will age well. Three months might mellow it a bit but won't produce much change in flavor. Aging beer is still relatively new and we don't understand much about how it affects it.
