Learning how to make a documentary can be tons of fun and does not require a filmmaking degree. You simply need a burning desire to tell your story and a willingness to figure out each step of the process.
Here are 10 easy-to-follow steps for making a documentary
-
Pinpoint a documentary idea -- The key here to choose a topic you are truly passionate about.
-
Create an outline -- Map out the basic structure and topics that you want to include in your documentary. You also want to think about the storytelling style -- News/PBS Frontline-type style? Half documentary/Half movie with reenactments? Talking heads? Personal point of view? Observational?
-
Gather your audio visuals - Start gathering existing footage and other audio visuals on your topic - this can be old home movies, photos, audio recordings, national archives, music, etc. Then decide what new footage is needed to tell your story and start shooting. This can be interviews with experts, capturing an event such as a horse show or football game, shooting footage of one of your characters - for example if you are focusing on a famous artist in your community, you'll want to get footage of that artist painting.
-
Produce/Edit a Trailer - Once you've gathered 3-5 hours of "raw footage", start piecing together a mini-version of your documentary, also called a "trailer". A trailer is typically 3-8 minutes and captures the essence of your documentary. This is a great tool to build buzz and help raise money for your documentary.
-
Shoot remaining footage - Continue gathering interviews and other footage to cover all the areas you listed in your documentary outline.
-
Catalog and organize -- If you are producing an hour-long documentary, you could potentially have dozens, even hundreds, of hours of footage that you will need to pull from during the editing process. Make sure all your interviews have been transcribed and that you know exactly where all your footage is located. There is nothing worse than being "in the groove" editing and having to stop and look through all the footage to find a specific shot.
-
Write a script - Even if you don't plan to have a narrator, you should have a script to lay out the basic order of your sequences, how you plan to start and finish your film, plus any interview quotes.
-
Edit your documentary -- If you've never edited video before, you may want to start off with some simple free video editing software such as Apple's "iMovie", although something a bit more sophisticated such as Final Cut Express will give you more flexibility. Start your documentary off with something intriguing, unusual or controversial to catch the attention of the audience. And know how the documentary will end to help determine your editing choices leading up to the conclusion.
-
Upload to the internet or burn to a DVD -- Make sure you own the copyright to EVERYTHING in your documentary before posting on the web or making copies. That goes for music (even ambient music playing in the background), archive footage and photos.
-
Promote, Distribute and Showcase -- This is the final step in the process where you might submit your documentary to film festivals, pitch it to PBS or other television broadcasters, upload to Amazon UnBox to sell copies of your documentary, have a premiere showing, create a public relations campaign around the release of your documentary and of course send out free DVDs and thank-you's to all who helped you.:)
So that is my quick, top 10 list for how to make a documentary.

Windsurfing Mast Extension
Before you start practicing windsurfing, it is vital to understand the various equipments used in it. A windsurfing novice can be easily misled into thinking that windsurfing involves only the surf board and the sail. However, there are various smaller parts like the boom, fin, uphaul, mast and mast base that play an equal role in windsurfing. Yet another important component of this kit is the mast extension.
Windsurfing Mast Extension
As the name suggests, mast extension refers to the extension that joins that mast to the luff of the sail. Usually the mast extension is adjustable so that it becomes easy to join different types of sails. The mast extension consists of pulleys that help to pull high degree of tension during downhauling. There are different types of mast extension systems from which you can choose the one that suits your mast and sail.
1. Grooved Extension: The grooved extension supports the mast with the help of a metal circlip. This circlip fits in the mast extension and supports the mast collar. The grooves or channels in which the circlip fits are at an interval of 1-2cms. The grooved mast extensions are known to offer great durability.
2. Spring-loaded Collar Extension: One of the most widely used mast extensions, the spring-loaded collar extension is the easiest to attach. The spring loaded extension can be easily adjusted according to the sail. Like the grooved extension, the spring-loaded extension too has holes drilled at fixed intervals. While strapping the mast extension collar, a pin is inserted through these holes so that the collar is attached at the desired level.
3. Pin System: In this type of mast extension, the tube comprises of holes drilled diametrically opposite each other. The mast collar is placed above a pin that is positioned through the hole at the required height.
Tips for Choosing Mast Extensions
Apart from the type of sails, it is important to keep a few factors in mind while choosing mast extensions. Some of the factors to be considered while choosing mast extensions are as follows:
1. Ensure that the mast extension is compatible with various brands of masts along with a carbon mast. Also, the extension must be designed to endure immense wear and tear including salt water exposure, huge amount of dust and sand particles.
2. The mast extension must be extremely efficient in downhauling. Opt for a mast extension with 15mm pulleys and a capable ratchet system.
3. It is recommended to opt for light-weight mast extensions that are easily adjustable as well as easy on your hands.
4. Always remember to check ring and collar adjustment system in a mast extension system.
5. It is preferable to have mast extensions that are easy to rig.
6. Several mast extensions available these days comprise of carbon fiber tube. This is a good development as this enhances the strength of the extension. It is also lighter in weight than the usual aluminium mast extension.
These are some of the basic aspects of mast extension. Often surfers do not give great importance to mast extensions and focus more on surf boards. However, a good mast extension plays a key role in windsurfing and hence must be carefully selected.

Concert review | Trey Anastasio keeps spreading the sweet jams
The bar band featured at the Uptown Theater on Sunday had an amazing guitarist. Ordinary bar bands, of course, don’t draw 1,200 fans. Then again, Trey Anastasio is no ordinary guitarist. Anastasio is the most prominent member of the wildly successful Grateful Dead-inspired jam band Phish. He often leads the Classic Tab collective when Phish is on hiatus.
