It takes a certain kind of comic genius to create a character who is, to quote the classic Sondheim lyric, appealing and appalling. But be forewarned: Borat is not "something for everyone." It arrives as advertised as one of the most outrageous, most offensive, and funniest films in years. Kazakhstan journalist Borat Sagdiyev (Sacha Baron Cohen reprising the popular character from his Da Ali G Show), leaves his humble village to come to "U.S. and A" to film a documentary. After catching an episode of Baywatch in his New York hotel room, he impulsively scuttles his plans and, accompanied by his fat, hirsute producer (Hardy to his Laurel), proceeds to California to pursue the object of his obsession, Pamela Anderson. Borat is not about how he finds America; it's about how America finds him in a series of increasingly cringe-worthy scenes. Borat, with his '70s mustache, well-worn grey suit, and outrageously backwards attitudes (especially where Jews are concerned) interacts with a cross-section of the populace, catching them, a la Alan Funt on Candid Camera, in the act of being themselves. Early on, an unwitting humor coach advises Borat about various types of jokes. Borat asks if his brother's retardation is a ripe subject for comedy. The coach patiently replies, "That would not be funny in America." NOT! Borat is subversively, bracingly funny. When it comes to exploring uncharted territory of what is and is not appropriate or politically correct, Borat knows no boundaries, as when he brings a fancy dinner with the southern gentry to a halt after returning from the bathroom with a bag of his feces ("The cultural differences are vast," his hostess graciously/patronizingly offers), or turns cheers to boos at a rodeo when he calls for bloodlust against the Iraqis and mangles "The Star Spangled Banner." Success, John F. Kennedy once said, has a thousand fathers. A paternity test on Borat might reveal traces of Bill Dana's Jose Jimenez, Andy Kaufman, Michael Moore, The Jamie Kennedy Xperiment, and Jackass. Some scenes seem to have been staged (a game Anderson, whom Borat confronts at a book signing, was reportedly in on the setup), but others, as the growing litany of lawsuits attests, were not. All too real is Borat's encounter with loutish Southern frat boys who reveal their sexism and racism, and the disturbing moment when he asks a gun store owner what gun he would recommend to "kill a Jew" (a Glock automatic is the matter-of-fact reply). Comedy is not pretty, and in Borat it can get downright ugly, as when Borat and his producer get jiggly with it during a nude fight that spills out from their hotel room into the hallway, elevator, lobby and finally, a mortgage brokers association banquet. High-five! --Donald Liebenson On the DVD "Global Visitings" captures Borat-mania in all its hype and glory, as Sacha Baron Cohen, never breaking character, promotes his film around the world. On the itinerary is Late Night with Conan O'Brien and the Toronto Film Festival, a now-legendary screening aborted after a projector malfunction. A mixed bag of deleted scenes finds Borat trying to bait more unsuspecting citizens, including an animal-control worker who refuses Borat a dog after he asks, "How do you recommend I cook this?" and a doctor who is nonplussed by Borat's obscene medical history. A supermarket visit offers the most maddening fromage-inspired looniness since Monty Python's "Cheese Shop" sketch. The genealogy hobby doesn't require lot of supplies, fortunately. Compared to other hobbies such as carpentry or music it requires little investments and supplies.
This is good for you if you are launching into this fascinating activity. However, there are some essential items that you want to get and keep them with you always while you are doing it.
I remember the first time I went in some places and i didn't have the things that were required. I was basically losing lot of time as I had to get there another time with the required supplies.
So here are some objects that you want to carry with you every time you go out seeking for information, or also while you do it at home.
The first one is a good notebook. Genealogy is mainly a word of mouth kind of hobby, and that's where you'll collect most of the information. Therefore, you need either an excellent memory or a good notebook so that you can write down everything. I discovered early on that trying just to remember things is never enough. Details get lost, sometimes confused with others. So in order to avoid this type of problem get a good notebook and carry it around with you when you go to talk to your relatives about your ancestors.
There is a high chance that your relatives will give you pictures and documents about your family ancestors. So it's good to have something to collect them and keep them organized. I recommend you invest in a portable file. That's not a huge expense.
Scrap paper and paperclips are also essential genealogy supplies. These will help you take some quick notes about photos and documents to attach to them, without having to write directly on the original.
If your relatives aren't willing to let you precious photos or documents, which is understandable, you can get a scanner for your computer so that you can have digital copies and reprint them whenever you want to. This is a higher investment, so if you're on a budget you can also go to a friend's house and have them scanned. You'll be able to use the copies in your family tree scrapbook and you will preserve the original ones.
Once you are done gathering information from your relatives, you can go online and continue. You need a computer to do this, with a decent internet connection. If you don't have it and you are not willing to invest in it just for this hobby, it's understandable. You could go to a friend's house once again and ask to use the computer for a while and maybe you could also ask him to join you.
On the web there are many websites that are genealogy related. Some of them offer complete family tree building services. Other simply offer templates to download so that the user has a skeleton to start their hobby. The latter solution is great and I recommend you get one of those templates when you start. You will have more clarity on where to start and the steps to take in order to complete your family tree.
As you have seen the supplies required for the genealogy and family tree building hobby aren't that much. However, all of the above are essential, so I recommend you get them as soon as you start.

Organic artist Deb Haugen and the Airbrush....starting out simple!
Years ago I studied with an amazing painter by the name of Jack Reilly. He taught me how to use an airbrush, and really see color. I studies with Jack for several years, and learned a lot. Eventually Jack left the studio, I took over the studio and the students. I taught surfboard makers, car painters, illustrators, fabric designers, model makers, and special effects guys. I taught a beginning airbrush class, and learned a lot also from my students with all of the different applications they were using.
We used an H1 Paasche airbrush, it being a single action. The single action brushes are very easy to use for beginners. You press a button and that gives you spray, then you use the appreture setting at the tip to give you line/spray width. To start out with, I find it's a lot easier to work with your paper or canvas hung on a wall, you standing in front of it level. Instead of worrying about learning over and spilling ink or paint out of your airbrush, with the artwork on a wall your body can move an adjust. It's very important to keep a good stance, loose, and be able to move with fluidity. You are strifing for fluidity with the use of an airbrush, so when you FEEL fluid this helps your work. Bend at the knees a bit, and plant your feet apart even with your shoulders. You will feel steady and in control, a good thing to be while airbrushing.
Look through a magazine for a photograph of folded or draped fabric in a solid color, or shoot a pic yourself to work from. This will be your first study in what the airbrush can accomplish for you. Take that photo and reduce it into a black and white image, making sure it has high lights and high lows in value. Mix your colors. This exercise works best in black and white, shades of grey, you'll see why later. Mix 5 colors from very dark to extrememly light greys. Once you trace in or draw, or project the image, you can start airbrushing. I use watered down acrylic paint, take care in mixing or even straining out any lumps. I paint very large and found that mixing my own acrylic paints to spray works better for me and is extremely cost efficient.....yes, I'm cheap when it comes to supplies, I am always looking to cut costs down. In airbrush work it's always better to work from light to dark. At the end you can come in with some very light highlights to make the art come alive.
Work the folds, and drapes evenly and with a fluid motion to your hands and body movement. Flow with it and fool around with how close you are to the paper. If you are getting dripps on the paper, you are putting too much paint on it all at once, and or you might be too close to the paper. Back up and SLOW down. When you airbrush it's not easy to see the spray at first, you'll become accustomed to it after awhile. It does take full concentration, but don't tense your shoulders and get too tight, that will show in your artwork. Once you have finished the grey draped fabric, now it is time for some magic. Mix up a transparent color, such as a Phthalo blue, or even one of the new Luiqitex transparent inks, spray evenly and very lightly from a distance over your entire painting. This creates lots of ooo's and ahhhs from students, as it makes the fabric come to life.
Lastly have fun with the airbrush, have patience, and experiment. It takes a bit of use to get comfortable but you will be amazed at what you can accomplish!
