Sonny Bono was a record-biz vet by the time he hooked up with a teenaged female singer named Cher. After a 1963 flop under the name Caesar and Cleo, the pair clicked with "I Got You Babe," a leap onto the folk-rock bandwagon that made them America's favorite pseudohippies for a brief moment. Cher's less-than-dulcet tones never sounded better than when placed next to Sonny's nasal croak. As for Sonny himself, his solo protest work--including "Laugh at Me," later covered by Mott the Hoople--is excerpted here. There are no words. --Rickey Wright

One of the greatest war films ever made! Steve McQueen is unforgettable as "the Cooler King," leading Allied prisoners in a daring escape from a German POW camp. James Garner, Richard Attenborough, Charles Bronson, James Coburn also star in this superior effort, noted for McQueen's daring motorcycle jump and Elmer Bernstein's triumphant score. 172 min. Widescreen; Soundtracks: English Dolby Digital stereo, French Dolby Digital stereo; Subtitles: English, French, Spanish; interactive menus; scene access; "making of" documentary; trivia; production notes; theatrical trailer.
A stirring example of courage and the indomitable human spirit, for many John Sturges's The Great Escape is both the definitive World War II drama and the nonpareil prison escape movie. Featuring an unequalled ensemble cast in a rivetingly authentic true-life scenario set to Elmer Bernstein's admirable music, this picture is both a template for subsequent action-adventure movies and one of the last glories of Golden Age Hollywood. Reunited with the director who made him a star in The Magnificent Seven, Steve McQueen gives a career-defining performance as the laconic Hilts, the baseball-loving, motorbike-riding "Cooler King." The rest of the all-male Anglo-American cast--Dickie Attenborough, Donald Pleasance, James Garner, Charles Bronson, David McCallum, James Coburn, and Gordon Jackson--make the most of their meaty roles (though you have to forgive Coburn his Australian accent). Closely based on Paul Brickhill's book, the various escape attempts, scrounging, forging, and ferreting activities are authentically realized thanks also to technical advisor Wally Flood, one of the original tunnel-digging POWs. Sturges orchestrates the climax with total conviction, giving us both high action and very poignant human drama. Without trivializing the grim reality, The Great Escape thrillingly celebrates the heroism of men who never gave up the fight. --Mark Walker

Ron Santo has been denied so many times for the Hall of Fame most people have lost track. What this travesty does is make people wonder why he has not made it and is often great discussion near water coolers at work especially lately with his untimely death. We think he has not only the statistics to merit entry but the overall contributions to the game to put the icing on the cake. We analyze the top 5 reasons we think Ron Santo is a Hall of Famer.
Reason 1) There are 10 Hall of Fame 3rd basemen inducted currently and Santo's statistics would put him in the Top 5. In 15 seasons, Santo batted.277 with 342 homers and 1,331 RBI. He was a nine-time All-Star selection. The home runs are 84th all time in MLB history and the RBI's 86th.
Reason 2) He accumulated these statistics while battling diabetes which in itself was unheard of for athletes during those this era. He kept this a secret for a large majority of his career.
Reason 3) 1969 and his teammates should not be a factor. Most baseball fans know of the 1969 collapse but the more important issue is from those late 60's early 70's Cub team there are 3 current Hall of Fame players that were on those teams: Ferguson Jenkins, Billy Williams, and Ernie Banks. Don't penalize Santo because none of those teams won anything.
Reason 4) Ron Santo was hired in 1990 to be the team's radio analyst. 15 years playing with the Cubs and 20 years broadcasting would have gotten a lot of people in the Hall of Fame based on "contributions to the game". Why is Ron Santo held do a different standard?
Reason 5) He played the game "hard" and sometimes that annoyed fellow ball players. Why is that factor on why he would not be voted in to the HOF? Integrity in playing the game of baseball should be one of the greatest attributes in defining a HOF player. There are many players who are not liked who were enshrined. Ron Santo played the game correctly.
These 5 reasons are just some of the many reasons why Ron Santo belongs in the Hall of Fame. Not only was he a great baseball player but his off the field accomplishments whether it was part of the Cubs radio broadcasts or the money he helped raise to fight for a cure of diabetes are simply "icing on the cake" when discussing Ron Santo's well deserved resume for Cooperstown Hall of Fame.

Baseball Sunglasses - a Home Run in Sports Eyewear
Baseball, the greatest pastime of America. It's such a part of many Americans' lives: little children pitch and bat in the Little League while their parents proudly look on. The same intensity can be felt by baseball players in the Big Leagues. They feel pressure not only from public scrutiny, but also from making sure that they take every step possible to avoid injury or sickness, because time away from the field means less money and more chances of being replaced by someone younger and stronger. Baseball sunglasses are part of a player's arsenal of protective bodywear and accessories for staying in the game.
Many baseball games are played at night, but about just as many are played outdoors in broad daylight, too. This is when baseball sunglasses are indispensable. Without such sports sunglasses, trying to catch a ball - especially one that is hit up high - is very difficult indeed. Staring straight up into the sun while trying to ascertain the ball's location and speed of descent can strain the eyes and increase the chance that the ball will be missed. It is partly for this reason that baseball players wear sunglasses - to enhance their playing performance. Many baseball sunglasses come with lenses that are optimized to eliminate glare and enhance vision, especially on sunny days. Baseball players prefer wearing so-called amber sunglasses on such days, even though the lenses aren't really amber. More often than not, they are either brown or gray.
There are also baseball sunglasses that are suitable for games played at night, but the tint of the lenses need to be considered very carefully. It is best to use clear lenses that have an anti-reflective coating to offset or absorb the glare of bright stadium lights. Baseball players sometimes use sunglasses with yellow lenses for indoor games, but experts warn that such colored lenses can compromise visual discernment and can affect reaction times.
Another aspect of the importance of sports eyewear is their ability to shield players from serious injury. In fact, figures from the National Society to Prevent Blindness show that thousands of injuries were caused directly or indirectly by playing baseball. Many of the injuries were inflicted on players' eyes when the ball would hit them there. A baseball that has been pitched or batted can travel at very fast speeds, and the injuries they can cause have the potential to be very serious indeed. For this reason, it is recommended that baseball players choose sports sunglasses with polycarbonate lenses, which are able to withstand the impact of a baseball and are virtually shatterproof. Having a lightweight but durable frame is just as important. Polycarbon frames are likewise resistant to breaking and are suitable for baseball players. Some baseball sunglasses have a shield design where the entire front of the frame is a polycarbon lens while the temples are another material. What's good about this type of design is that the lens can be changed to suit the daylight condition of a particular game.
Players who need prescription sports sunglasses or goggles need not worry. Many brands now offer customized eyewear to fit any prescription. There are even models where the user can change the lenses to fit lighting conditions while maintaining lens prescription. Rudy Project is one such brand that offers prescription sunglasses.
There are many other baseball sunglasses brands in the marketplace, the vast majority of which offer the high quality and stylistic design that athletes want and need. Some brands use their own proprietary technology in their sports sunglasses. For instance, Oakley incorporates its Polaric Ellipsoid technology in its lenses to ensure purity of vision, one that is not hampered by distortions. Akadema is another popular brand whose shades offer 100% ultraviolet radiation protection and shatter-proof frames and lenses. Kaenon, Nike, Bolle - these and many more grace the faces of baseball players and other athletes, both in the professional and non-professional leagues.
Baseball sunglasses are part of the whole package that contributes to how a pitcher pitches, a batter bats, or a catcher catches. They can enhance playing performance and play a major role in protecting players from eye injuries caused by either sunlight or an errant ball. On top of all that, they can make a player look cool, too! This proves that baseball sunglasses are not only useful and functional, but that they are attractive pieces of sports eyewear as well.

Greatest baseball manager of the past 50 years?
Who's your choice, and why?
Maddog - Weaver is a great choice. One of the first to really study the opposing team in detail.
Okay, I know he may not be very popular right now (especially in Detroit), but I can't believe that no one even mentioned Jim Leyland! Where are you, Tiger fans?!
Leyland took the Pittsburgh Pirates to the playoffs in 1991, 1992 and 1993, the Pittsburgh Pirates! for crying out loud! And then he won it all with the Florida Marlins in 1997, and took the Detroit Tigers to the series in 2006 (a franchise that lost 119 games just three years prior). Remember, these were all smaller market teams. I know Leyland had Barry Bonds, Bobby Bonilla and Sid Bream on those Pirates teams, but that was the "pre-juiced" Bonds, and we all know Bonilla was overrated. Leyland was perfect for massaging the huge egos of Bonds and Bonilla while bringing forth the team chemistry. Too bad they could never get past the Braves.
In 1997, Leyland and the Marlins came out of no where to win the Series. He had a decent team, but not great. Then, he took the underdog Tigers to the Series in 2006, beating my favored Yankees along the way. Come to think of it, what am I talking about?! I hate this guy!
The problem this year just might be that his team is way too expensive...
Honorable mention: Gil Hodges, Earl Weaver, Casey Stengel, Sparky Anderson, Bobby Cox
