Recently just bought my first digital SLR camera, can some one explain about the differant lenses?
I know there are loads of differant types but im just looking for the fundamentals of photography adn choosing differant lenses..
generally wide angles are for landscape photography or where you need to cram a lot of area into the picture, say at a wedding....
telephotos are used to bring distant subjects into prominance, telephotos start at arund 100/150mm and on up, above 500mm telephotos satrt be classified as super telephotos and gernerally should only be sued with a tripod or secure camera support
in the old 35mm days a 'standard' lens was usually around 50..75mm
there are specialist lenses (eg fisheyes) whch are used for specific effects
zoom lenses try to bridge the old proble, of what lens to have (it used to be a fixed length lens eg a 50mm, a 150mm, these days most lenses are zoom lenses which means they cover a spectrum of focal lengths. quite often these span say wideangle to standard, standard to telephoto, or telephoto ranges. but nothing coms for free, quite often zoom lenses are a design compromise, they do lots of things well, but they don't do anyhtign especailly well, or as well as a specific focal length lens.
the fstop indicates how much light a lens will let in (effectivley it dictates the depth of field and / or level of light you can shot images in. generally the lower the fnumber the better, the wider the range of fstops the better.
the real difference between basic, standard and professional lenses is the cost!, the focla range, the number and quality of the ptic components the speed (fstop) of the lens.
Some kit lens's are not especialy good, some are fine, depends ont he manufacturer. unles you are taking really demanding photo's its doubtful int he early days you will get any benefit from profesional lenses..if you have the budget then Id suggest spend soemhtign on learning how to use the camera prooerly
but most of all enjoy taking photos
