Selecting a Desktop Computer
The search for desktop computers can be daunting. If you are new to the search you will be confused by the technological terms and may not be sure where to compromise. You might be confused as to why some computers seem to be the same as others but cost a lot more. Perhaps the information here can help.
It helps to know what the primary use of the desktop computer is going to be. If it is primarily for business you are going to want to focus on different areas than someone looking for a gaming computer.
Once you know what your primary use is going to be, the rest is really pretty easy. If you are looking for a business computer you will be fine with the simple video card that comes standard on most machines. You will want a decent sized hard drive but you probably won’t need anything over 500gb. Spend the extra money on business software and a good monitor. Make sure to swap out the standard throwaway keyboard for one that is ergonomic or that feels comfortable to you.
If you are looking for a gaming system, forget about business software and get the best graphics card you can afford. A 1tb hard drive wouldn’t be a bad investment either. You will want to focus on hard drive space and graphics. A good set of speakers will make the gaming experience even better.
If you are looking for a family computer, one for homework, some games and such, look for a mid range video card, upgrade the standard speakers and invest in some good hardware. If there are children involved you might want to get one of the parental control programs on the market to block inappropriate sites. You are also going to want the largest hard drive that you can afford. The more people using the computer, the more space it’s going to need.
No matter what else you are looking for in your desktop computer make sure you buy the highest GHz that you can afford. This is the speed of the computer and it’s one thing that cannot be upgraded.
In all cases the operating system you are most likely going to encounter is going to be Windows Vista. That’s ok as most of the bugs have been worked out and it runs much better now than it did when it was first released.
While most computers now come with a DVD-RW drive (that means it can play and write DVD’s and CD’s), check to make sure. Even if you don’t think you need one, you will eventually want it. They don’t really cost any more than if you don’t get one.
Software bundles, once a big selling point for new desktop computers, no longer matter as much. You can often get a seller to discount a particular piece of software if you buy it when you buy the computer. As long as you know what the primary use of your new desktop computer is going to be, selecting the components is quick and easy. Choose the features that are most important to you and then sit back and enjoy!
