Like Mike
List Price: $14.98
Sale Price: $6.99
|
|

As its title suggests, Like Mike is a rousing wish-fulfillment fantasy for any kid who's ever dreamed of soaring for a game-winning slam dunk like basketball legend Michael Jordan. It's fun but formulaic, beginning when 14-year-old, 4-foot-8 orphan Calvin Cambridge (played by appealing teen rapper Lil' Bow Wow) dons a magical pair of hand-me-down Nikes with the enticing initials "M.J." written inside. Next thing you know, Calvin's the new star of the L.A. Knights, an instant NBA celebrity taking his team to the playoffs alongside favorite teammate Tracy Reynolds (The Best Man's Morris Chestnut), with a bevy of villains (including reliable weirdo Crispin Glover) trying to steal his thunder. With Jerry Maguire's Jonathan Lipnicki as a fellow orphan, and a solid supporting cast including Eugene Levy, Robert Forster, and two dozen NBA stars, Like Mike is schmaltzy and predictable (and, surprisingly, there's no cameo from Jordan himself), but its sweet, good-natured quality will captivate kids from start to finish. --Jeff Shannon
When a 13-year-old orphan (rapper Lil' Bow Wow) finds a pair of mystical sneakers, he suddenly acquires the skills of a certain basketball legend. With his newfound ability, he fulfills his dream of playing in the NBA. But when the nefarious headmaster of the orphanage where Bow Wow lives cooks up a plot to steal the shoes, the diminutive dunker must choose between his career and his true wish of being adopted by a loving family. Morris Chestnut, Jonathan Lipnicki, Crispin Glover, and Eugene Levy co-star. 100 min. Standard and Widescreen (Enhanced); Soundtracks: English Dolby Digital 5.1, French Dolby Digital Surround, Spanish Dolby Digital Surround; Subtitles: English, Spanish; audio commentary; deleted scenes; featurettes; music video.

Michael Jordan to the Max (Large Format)

The greatest basketball player of all time gets an appropriate clip reel in this 45-minute documentary, which was originally released in the IMAX format. While you can't simulate IMAX's 80-foot-high screen in your living room, you can still get the thrills and awe-inspiring footage of this tribute to one man's talent and endurance. Much of the original footage was shot during the 1997 NBA Finals between the Chicago Bulls and the Utah Jazz. With great behind-the-scenes footage and terrific game material, the film gets close to Jordan in practice and on the court. And the film includes a number of greatest hits, including his commercials and most memorable dunks. Still, while there are intriguing interviews with everyone from former Bulls coach Phil Jackson to professional Jordan hanger-on Bob Greene, this film seems a little self-serving at times (Jordan's company coproduced it). Also, some key voices from that team are conspicuously absent, including Scottie Pippen, Dennis Rodman, and Ron Harper. In the end, however, it's all about the highlights--and Jordan's career (and his NBA finale) was one long one. --Marshall Fine
Originally presented in the IMAX format, this spectacular look at the life of basketball great Michael Jordan offers incredible basketball action, focusing on his six championships with the Chicago Bulls. Also featured are his college career at the University of North Carolina and Jordan's own philosophy on achieving one's goals. Laurence Fishburne narrates. 83 min. Widescreen; Soundtracks: English Dolby Digital 5.1, Dolby Digital stereo, French; Subtitles: English; audio commentary; featurette; theatrical trailer; TV spot. NOTE: This Title Is Out Of Print; Limit One Per Customer.

Michael Jordan - Come Fly With Me [VHS]
List Price: $14.95

It's showtime! Come Fly with Me packs in 50 minutes of breathtaking basketball highlights of the man considered the greatest basketball player of all time: Michael Jordan. Produced in 1989, before Jordan's first championship with the Chicago Bulls, Come Fly covers Michael's middle-class childhood in North Carolina, his rise in the NCAA ranks with the University of North Carolina, and the first few professional seasons with the Bulls. But if it's athletic wonders you seek as opposed to lots of factual details, you'll be well satisfied. This video clearly was designed to celebrate, not necessarily sketch out, the man and his history. Early footage of Michael will delight longtime Bulls fans. Included are interviews with family members, school mentors (we meet the coach who made the now-famous cut of Michael from his high-school junior varsity team), and 1980s Bulls coach Doug Collins (complete with frizzy 'fro), and plenty of slam dunks, athletic ballet, and "Wanna Be Like Mike" charisma. Missing is mention of fellow University of North Carolina teammates James Worthy and Sam Perkins, as well as a decent hip-hop soundtrack (the music is early sports documentary cheezola), but these are small flaws compared to the man's jaw-dropping aerobics. Footage of the slam-dunk contest alone--where Jordan captured his own goal of taking off at the free-throw line and dunking at the hoop (complete with legs bent back in Air flight)--will leave viewers grinning and shaking their heads. His energy is endless, his creativity self-renewing, and his athleticism graceful and magical. This video is a fun peek into the youthful Michael now so far behind us. --Karen Karleski

Basketball is one of the most famous games across the globe. Since it was founded in US, it has gained in popularity and is now a major sport across the world, a game which people from all countries and all continents enjoy playing. This game can test the limits of your body. Many health experts recommend people to play basketball because of its obvious health benefits. One of the most famous moves in the basketball is the dunk. You don't necessary have to be seven feet tall to dunk a basketball. You can do it even if you are of normal height and built. To be able to dunk properly, you need a few tricks, lot of hard work and determination. In this article you will learn about the things you should take care of if you want to dunk.
First of all, you need to have light body to be able to do a dunk. If you are not exactly slim, you need to lose some weight before you start training for dunk. If you have a slim body, then it reduces the stress on your legs and they don't have to work as hard in lifting you up from the ground. Another thing is to strengthen the muscles of your arms, abs, legs and calves. If you have the necessary strength you will be able to jump higher and would be in the air for comparatively long duration of time. You should do some great work on these muscles by doing regular exercises like squats, crunches, pushups etc.
Squats are especially helpful as they strengthen your hamstrings which can directly increase your ability to jump higher. To improve your calves, you can do calf raises on the benches or chairs. Moreover, proper stretching should be done before and after every training session and game. Also, you should train yourself to gain speed in your running. You should remember that all good dunkers are good runners too. To increase your jump explosion, you would have to train yourself to be faster and stronger. You should learn to get the necessary speed in by covering less distance, as this is the trait of all great dunkers.
After proper exercises, training and running, there is another thing you should have to take care and that is your nutrition. Right nutrition is imperative for your muscle power to increase. It can also save you from a lot of injuries, and make your body strong enough to adapt to the injuries. You should avoid the high calorie, high fat foods and include nutritious foods containing a lot of protein. Protein is essential for growth of muscles and you should include a lot of proteins to have the necessary energy to do the training.
But the most important thing is to practice and practice consistently. The more you do the training and practice, under the guidance of a proper coach, the better you will be able to dunk. Like in all sports, you need lot of hard work and determination to excel in basketball and be able to dunk the ball.

Better Basketball Dunking
To get better at dunking you need dunk like a maniac. Ask Michael Jordan and he'll tell you he never actually worked on any program he just went out there and he was dunking like hell. And that's what you should do. But hey.. I'm not going to leave you without some sweet little tips:) Okay? Here we go.
Here are several tips to improve your dunking ability:
"Pull" 2-3 inches with this one..
1.) If you are determined to dunk with authority everytime you are dunking a basketball, and you lower your buttocks little more than usual you can pull off maybe 2-3 inches from you vertical. It’s true.
I’ll say that again. Having faith that you will jump so high that eventually your eyes will see the rim right in front of you, and you will lower you legs more than you normally do (in other words – as if you are seemingly going to crouch), can easily add 2-3 more inches to your vertical leap. Try it!
Better palming..
2.) Are you having a hard time palming the basketball? Try licking your fingertips for better palming. It always helps. You'll learn/train to palm the ball even better the more dunks you do, of course, but this little trick can help you a great deal.
Learn 360s the easy way.
3.) I learned to spin the hard way because I didn't know where the head should be turned. Well, here's a principle. The head follows the body. It's a pretty basic concept but a lot of players tend to forget. When I was learning to do 360 spin, my head was the last thing to look at the rim. And boy, was I ever wrong.
The head should be the first thing to look at the rim. Here's how you do that.
So as you start spinning, concentrate on the head. Before you can position your limbs towards the rim your head should have already seen the rim. In other words, try to turn your head towards the rim as quickly as you can. Okay, I emphasized that enough:) After several successful dunks I didn’t have to think about the head at all.
Also remember to "land" with both feet at the same time after you dunk the ball (after doing a 360 or 180 spin). If you land with one foot there is much greater chance you'll lose balance and fall on the ground.
