Singable Songs Collection List Price: $25.98 Sale Price: $16.76 |
|
In 1976 a young Toronto musician released a fun and lively record called Singable Songs for the Very Young. The artist was a fellow called Raffi, and in the liner notes he wrote at the time that "there are very few good children's records." True as that was in the '70s, Singable Songs became the No. 1 bestseller in its field and set the standard for today's greater volume of high-quality material. The Singable Songs Collection reissues the classic Singable Songs for the Very Young and its superlative successors, More Singable Songs and Corner Grocery Store, as a set. Raffi's exhilarating acoustic musicality and sense of humor shine brightly through. Single-digit-age kids and their parents will get a kick out of these silly, educational, and joyful songs, which range in subject matter and tone from shared peanut-butter sandwiches and instrumental ragtime to standards like "Goodnight, Irene." --Paige La Grone No Description AvailableNo Track Information AvailableMedia Type: CDArtist: RAFFITitle: SINGABLE SONGS COLLECTIONStreet Release Date: 08/10/1998 |

What's up, Doc? Well, how about a four-disc boxed set packed with 56 of the funniest cartoons in Warner Bros. history? Get ready to laugh yourself silly with salutes to Bugs Bunny ("Baseball Bugs," "Long-Haired Hare," "Wabbit Twouble," "The Rabbit of Seville," and more); Daffy Duck and Porky Pig ("Duck Amuck," "Dough for the Do-Do," "Scaredy Cat," "Duck Dodgers in the 24 1/2th Century," and more); and other toon faves ("Elmer's Candid Camera," "Fast and Furry-ous," "For Scent-imental Reasons," "Speedy Gonzales," "The Foghorn Leghorn," "Devil May Hare," and more). 6 3/4 hrs. total. Standard; Soundtracks: English Dolby Digital mono, French Dolby Digital mono; Subtitles: English, French, Spanish; audio commentary; documentaries; featurette; more. NOTE: This set includes all 28 shorts from "Premiere Collection, Vol. 1." For years, animation buffs have waited impatiently for the Warner Bros. cartoons to appear on DVD. The Warner shorts never commanded the budgets and prestige of the Disney and MGM films, and won fewer Oscars than they deserved. But decades after the best ones were created, they remain the quintessential Hollywood cartoons: brash, fast-paced, aggressively funny and uniquely American. Virtually everyone in the U.S. under the age of 60 grew up on these films, in theaters and on TV. The 56 cartoons in the set (out of a studio output of over 1,000) were transferred from good prints--which means the viewer can see dust, scratches, and occasional mistakes by the cel painters. The films are all presented uncut, in defiance of the killjoys who have insisted on censoring alleged "violence" in the versions shown on television. Warner Bros. is obviously testing consumer response with this set. Although the erratic selection includes many classics, purists will argue (correctly) that it offers neither a fair representation of the directors' oeuvres, nor anything approaching a coherent history of the characters or studio style. (Nearly half the films were directed by Chuck Jones; only three are by Bob Clampett, and there's nothing by Tex Avery or Frank Tashlin.) But it seems petty to carp about omissions and biases when the discs offer excellent, uncensored prints of some of the funniest films ever made in the U.S.--or anywhere else. (Rated G, suitable for all ages: cartoon violence) --Charles Solomon |

The Dukes of Hazzard: The Complete First Season List Price: $27.96 Sale Price: $12.95 |
|
The Dukes of Hazzard was part of America's redneck fetish in the mid-to-late 1970s, otherwise evident in popular songs, movies, and television shows highlighting fast cars, truckers, citizens' band radio, moonshine, irreverent hicks, and clueless lawmen. Created by writer-producer Gy Waldron and inspired by his own 1975 bootlegging comedy, Moonrunners, Dukes milked seven seasons of material from the tale of a Deep South family of reformed whiskey-makers and their running feud with a greedy impresario and his chief lackey, a buffoonish, venal sheriff. This three-disc set includes all 13 initial episodes of Dukes from 1979, a period fans fondly recall because some of the programs were shot on location in Covington, Georgia, rather than a Burbank backlot. Also noteworthy is that a couple of key characters, particularly Hazzard County's corrupt lawman, Roscoe P. Coltrane (James Best), hadn't gelled yet into permanent hayseed stereotypes and were arguably more interesting at the beginning. At the center of the action is Sheriff Coltrane's nemeses, cousins Bo Duke (John Schneider) and Luke Duke (Tom Wopat), a couple of wild boys buzzing through the backwoods in the "General Lee," a souped-up Dodge Charger. Bo and Luke are good at heart but have to behave themselves while on indefinite probation, complicating but not halting their efforts to vex Roscoe and his patron, diminutive bigwig Boss Hogg (Sorrell Booke). The enmity runs both ways: Roscoe and Boss Hogg, with the aid of witless Deputy Enos Strate (Sonny Shroyer), dream up ways of eliminating the Dukes--including their wise old Uncle Jesse (Denver Pyle)--but their efforts always backfire. While every episode is a variation on the previous one, predictability is a virtue in Dukes. The series pilot, "One Armed Bandits," finds Luke and Bo, with help from their sexy cousin, Daisy (Catherine Bach), diverting slot machines (smuggled into Hazzard County by Roscoe and Boss Hogg) to sundry watering holes where they can raise money for Bo's girlfriend's charity. In "Money to Burn," Boss Hogg tries to frame Bo and Luke for robbing an armored truck, while in "Deputy Dukes," the unarmed guys are forced by Roscoe to escort a deadly prisoner from one town to another. The Dukes hit back in "Daisy's Song," investigating a scam that took Daisy for $50 and implicates, of course, Boss Hogg and Roscoe. Yes, it's a show about rubes, car stunts, and a legacy of moonshine, but there's something comforting about it, in a tongue-in-cheek way. --Tom Keogh All 13 episodes from the series's debut season--including "One Armed Bandits," "Daisy's Song," "Repo Men," "Deputy Dukes," and "Double Sting"--are featured in a three-disc set. 10 1/2 hrs. total. Standard; Soundtrack: English Dolby Digital mono; Subtitles: English, French, Spanish; documentary; featurette. **13 episodes on 3 discs. 10 1/2 hrs.** |

Comanche Moon: The Second Chapter in the Lonesome Dove Saga List Price: $14.99 Sale Price: $3.43 |
|
Adapted from the novel linking Larry McMurtry's "Lonesome Dove" to "Dead Man's Walk," this miniseries follows Texas Rangers McCrae (Steve Zahn) and Call (Karl Urban) as they return home from a mission to capture a Comanche horse thief, only to discover their love lives in disarray. Reeling from these personal travails, the men are then asked to rescue their kidnapped captain. Elizabeth Banks, Val Kilmer, Rachel Griffiths co-star. 4 3/4 hrs. on two discs. Widescreen (Enhanced); Soundtrack: English Dolby Digital 5.1; Subtitles: English, French; behind-the-scenes footage; featurette. It's billed as "the second chapter in the Lonesome Dove saga," but Comanche Moon is actually a prequel to that much-loved 1989 miniseries. And while there's no doubt that it has some very big boots to fill, this three-part (on two DVDs, including bonus features) production is rarely less than eminently watchable and entertaining. Continuity is a positive factor: Larry McMurtry, who wrote the novel on which it's based, also co-wrote the screenplay, and Lonesome Dove director Simon Wincer returns as well. As for the cast, it's certainly not as star-studded as its predecessor, but Steve Zahn (as Gus McCrae), Karl Urban (Woodrow Call), Linda Cardellini (Clara Allen), and the others manage to suggest the characterizations brought to the screen by Robert Duvall, Tommy Lee Jones, and Anjelica Huston, respectively, without mimicking them. Of course, there are new faces on hand as well, principally Val Kilmer (looking a mite chubby, perhaps due to all the scenery he chews in his portrayal of Texas Rangers Captain Inish Scull) and Rachel Griffiths (as Scull's horny wife). As the tale begins in 1858, Call and McCrae, some years away from becoming the cattlemen depicted in Lonesome Dove, are Rangers serving under the educated and eccentric Scull as they work to protect the territory against marauding Comanches, led by the stern, vengeful Buffalo Hump (Wes Studi) and his crazed son, Blue Duck (Adam Beach). When Scull's horse is stolen by one of the Indians, he sets out to retrieve the beast, promoting both Call and McRae to Captain, and the rest of the story revolves primarily around them; in fact, although there's a reasonable amount of action (including the Comanche raid on Austin that opens Part Two), Comanche Moon is much less plot-dependent than character-driven, and it is Call (tough, taciturn, and totally clueless when it comes to the fair sex) and best friend McRae (an open-hearted, self-described jester) who are the most engaging of the bunch as they navigate the deep waters of their work and love lives (McRae with Clara and Call with the prostitute Maggie Tilton, played by Elizabeth Banks). McMurtry and co-writer Diana Ossana's dialogue manages to be at once plain and poetic, colorful and poignant, and regardless of what's actually happening onscreen, the miniseries has a light, often whimsical charm that separates it from most Westerns made for big and small screen alike. Extras include a "making of" featurette and more. --Sam Graham Stills from Comanche Moon (click for larger image) Beyond Comanche Moon Broken Trail 3:10 to Yuma Cat Ballou |

DuckTales - Volume 1 List Price: $20.00 Sale Price: $13.99 |
|
Ducktales (1987) marked the Walt Disney Studio's entry into the afternoon syndicated-cartoon market. The series was loosely based on the imaginative adventure stories Carl Barks created for the Disney comic books, featuring Donald Duck, his nephews Huey, Dewey, and Louie, and Uncle Scrooge McDuck, a miser who possessed "five cubic acres of money." This three-disc set begins with episode #6, "Send in the Clones." (The series started with "Ducktales: Treasure of the Golden Suns," a two-hour TV movie in which Donald joins the Navy and sends Huey, Dewey, and Louie to live with their great-uncle Scrooge. This adventure was recut into the first five episodes, which are not included in this set.) Ducktales never matched the panache of Barks's inspired original. The TV series added the whiny Webbigail and her grandmother, Mrs. Beakly, who resembled a feather pillow with a beak. Launchpad McQuack supplied mock-heroic comedy, although his prominent cleft chin made him look like a pelican. When Uncle Scrooge and his relatives scaled the Himalayas in search of the crown of Genghis Kahn in the comic book, Barks ended the story with typical irony: people weren't interested in the gold and jewels Scrooge coveted, they only wanted to hear about Gu, the abominable snowman he encountered. In the animated version, the big joke is an amorous, ugly female snowman chasing Launchpad. But these shortcomings never bothered the Gen-Y viewers who grew up watching Ducktales. (Rated TV-Y, suitable for ages 6 and older: cartoon violence) --Charles Solomon Twenty-seven episodes from the series's debut season--including "Don't Give up the Ship," "Three Ducks of the Condor," "Armstrong," "Spies in Their Eyes," and "Nothing to Fear"--are collected in a three-disc set. 10 1/4 hrs. total. Standard; Soundtrack: English Dolby Digital mono; Subtitles: English (SDH). **27 episodes on 3 discs. 10 1/4 hrs.** |

Features include: •MPAA Rating: PG•Format: DVD•Runtime: 315 minutes This follow-up to the surprise Disney hit about a hockey team of misfits brings Emilio Estevez back to the role of the kids' yuppie coach. This time, Estevez assimilates his Ducks into the higher-stakes Team USA in the Junior Goodwill Games, an opportunity that could bring fame and money. Entirely perfunctory, this sequel is basically an excuse to revisit the eccentricities of some of the younger characters, extend some of their conflicts into adolescence, and showcase their allegedly entertaining but ethically dubious abilities on the ice. Estevez is okay, but even he had enough after this movie. --Tom Keogh |

Healing Back Pain: The Mind-Body Connection List Price: $13.99 Sale Price: $5.75 |
|
One of the world's foremost back doctors examines new treatments to relieve pain without exercise, meditation, or physical therapy. Healing Back Pain promises permanent elimination of back pain without drugs, surgery, or exercise. It should have been titled Understanding TMS Pain, because it discusses one particular cause of back pain--Tension Myositis Syndrome (TMS)--and isn't really a program for self-treatment, with only five pages of action plan (and many more pages telling why conventional methods don't work). According to John E. Sarno, M.D., TMS is the major cause of pain in the back, neck, shoulders, buttocks, and limbs--and it is caused not by structural abnormalities but by the mind's effort to repress emotions. He's not saying that your pain is all in your head; rather, he's saying that the battle going on in your mind results in a real physical disorder that may affect muscles, nerves, tendons, or ligaments. An injury may have triggered the disorder, but is not the cause of the amount or intensity of the resulting pain. According to Sarno, the mind tricks you into not facing repressed emotion by making you focus on pain in the body. When this realization sinks in ("and it must sink in, for mere intellectual appreciation of the process is not enough"), the trick doesn't work any more, and there's no need for the pain. (Healing Back Pain should not be used for self-diagnosis. Always consult a physician for chronic or acute back pain.) --Joan Price |
How to Make Christmas That Bit More Personal
No matter how old we get, there's no denying that we all get that little rush of excitement when we wake up on Christmas morning. Although there are many reasons to enjoy the day, the anticipation of finding out what gifts we've been given could be a Christmas present in itself.
But have you ever had that feeling of 'déjà vous' as you tear back the wrapping paper and look at what you've got? Pyjamas, slippers, a knitted jumper it probably wouldn't feel like Christmas if no one received at least one pair of socks. So how can we get truly excited about those Christmas gifts when we already know what we're getting? By making your Christmas gifts a little bit more personal this year, such as investing in some personalised calendars for all the family, you're guaranteed to bring some genuine smiles to the faces of those who you love the most.
Presents for the Kids
Younger Children will always find Christmas a truly magical time and it seems only right to treasure that in some way. With personalised Christmas gifts such as personalised calendars, you can ensure that you are giving them gifts that will last for a long time to come. For the younger children then a Personalised breakfast set can not only create a bit of fun at the dinner table, but they can also make wonderful keepsakes for when the kids grow up. A personalised teddy, or mug will hold the same nostalgia for years and it is these sorts of treasures that can also be passed on to their children too. For the slightly older children then invest in some personalised calendars if you really want to impress them this year. Calendars are a staple present just like the pyjamas and socks, but the personalised calendars incorporate the recipients own name into the cleverly arranged pictures, making them the true star of wonder this Christmas.
Christmas presents for Teenagers
Personalised calendars make great gifts for all members of the family but teenagers should be particularly easy to please as they're more likely to have some obvious interests - all of which can be found in a great selection of personalised calendars. Perhaps he fancies himself as a professional football star or maybe she wants to be an actress. Well, they can easily give Beckham and Kiera a run for their money when they see their own name integrated into the twelve amazing pictures of their personalised calendars. Remember that the key to impressing most teenagers is revealing that you too can be 'cool' and there could be no better way to impress than presenting them with a 'Personalised Framed Did Disc' – a mounted disc of any special song and artist. Just like the personalised calendars, these gifts can take centre stage on their bedroom walls.
Gifts for the Grandparents
It can be easy to fall into the habit of buying the same sort of presents for the more senior members of the family – something for the garden perhaps, or the latest must have gadget that you know they'll never use. But surprise your parents with personalised calendars this year and you can be sure it will be a very merry Christmas all round. There are several themes to choose from such as golfing, gardening, 'my mum' and the 'Essential Calendar' personalised calendars that contain twelve stunning images. How about a personalised bottle of champagne? Or an 'Engraved Pewter Tankard'? Like the personalised calendars, these gifts may seem quite ordinary at first, but the surprise is in the second glance.
Presents for your loved one
If you've got your partner well trained then come Christmas, you should be unwrapping the present you've been dropping 'subtle' hints about for the last few months. However, if you're stuck for ideas on what to buy this year then try one of the personalised calendars - the romantic themed personalised calendars can be a special treat for both of you to share. What about an original newspaper from the day they were born? Personalised and engraved gifts are a great opportunity to tell someone how much you care, but sometimes it's the little presents that will let them know how much you love them. What Christmas would be complete without a 'lover duck' rubber duck or even your 'Last Rolo'?
And for the Pets…
As fully fledged members of the family, it would seem unfair to celebrate Christmas without including your beloved pets. Though they're likely to be happy with a new toy and a bit of extra attention; they too could have their name immortalised in a special pet's version of the personalised calendars

Old IBM laptop having problems with 00161 and 00163 error?
My old laptop - which I use mainly for typing has developed a problem. When I turn it on it comes on but an error message (with a little flying duck for a cursor) is all I can get. I have tried esc. and alt, delete, etc. Any ideas on how I can fix this? I know it is an old computer but I like the feel of the keyboard for typing lengthy projects and then I download to disc and transfer later. It has windows 95 - I know that is old so maybe it is just worn out. But I will miss it if I don't get it fixed. Thanx

The errors refer to the CMOS battery. You need to take the case apart and find the button cell battery and take it to Radio Shack or similiar to replace it. Once that is replaces, the date and time in the BIOS will have to be reset.
Good luck dude.
'Shutter Island' leaves loose ends, but that's the point, right?
