Have disabled H.T in the BIOS because system overheats?? & shuts down It runs adequately but not good - Help?
My system pentium 4CPU 3.40GHZ 1GB RAM and I have used every diagnostic tool available,there does not appear to be any conflicts, I don't think it has anything to do with the CPU - The fan appears to be a bit noisy at times but apart from that everything seems fine except when I enable dual core processor & HT then even running a virus scan shuts down the system it immediatly reboots I have eliminated hardware as far as possible and all software has been installed and reinstalled. I have even gone through the registry as far as I have been able and have learned a lot but not about why this keeps crashing Help would be appreciated and don't think any answer would be too stupid I am clutching at straws here Thanks to all in advance.
somebody mentioned tis already but the stock fan that come on those pentiums sucks. First off, to explain what is actually happening. Those pentiums get really hot and are often joked about saying they could fry an egg. HT has nothing to do with the temperature directly. Make sure in BIOS you have the correct amount of Voltage being supplied to it. It may even be that you have too much voltage or are trying to overclock. If this doesn't help then replace the fan. here's a good list of fans. I use the Gigabyte G-power on my rig and it stays about 35C even overclocked (but it's an AMD, still works very well and looks really nice too):

There are more out there and it also comes down to taste and reviews. The ones I listed above are tried and true though. While you're at it replace the previous thermal grease or compound with some new compound. Arctic Silver 5, Evercool, Zalman are all good greases. clean off the old stuff with high %age rubbing alcohol and a paper towel or q-tip.
